Dave Meltzer: Chael Sonnen vs. Wanderlei Silva Likely for UFC Debut on FOX Sports 1

Following Chael Sonnen calling out Wanderlei Silva on Tuesday night’s episode of UFC Tonight on Fuel TV, the MMA world has been abuzz about this possible match up.  Dave Meltzer announced on his radio show that the fight is likely being targeted for the August event on Fox Sports 1.

Meltzer said of Chael’s call-out:

‘The Wanderlei Silva thing was something he was told to do because they [the UFC and FOX] are looking at [it]- I know that the idea is Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen as one of the top matches on the August 17 show in Boston.  That’s what they are looking for…  If you are thinking of a good TV main event, that’s it.  That’s a good one to have.  And again, Chael will cut the promos to build it up… I don’t know if the match will be great but it’s definitely the right mix to build a television main event.”

From a business standpoint, the fight certainly makes sense.  Sonnen has already began to create tension that could boil into excellent television drama.  FOX could use this to pump up the fight and attract new viewers outside the fans who would already be watching.  Additionally, Wanderlei’s record with television fights is superb given his recent Fuel TV performance against Brian Stann.

“As far as a TV main event,” said Meltzer, “Wanderlei Silva and Brian Stann is to me, is like the greatest TV main event in UFC.  It drew phenomenal ratings for Fuel… it was almost double the highest rated show in the history of the channel.  And what a match.  That probably was UFC’s best match of this year.”

Whether the rumor of this fight’s date pan out remain to be seen.  Until the UFC makes its decision, we can surely count on more antics from Sonnen and more Tweets from Wanderlei.

can’t wait to see wanderlei humiliate sonnen once again. This time we won’t see the usual sonnen featus position but a brutal KO in the first round. I wanted sonnen to retire but now I think I prefer if he keeps fighting and gets smashed by all these fighters he talked so badly about. The more he talks the better it feels when he gets destroyed lol

I pray this is in Boston, so i can finally see Wanderlei.. Yeah yeah, I know he is out of his prime but he is one of my favorite fighters of all time and i have missed a couple of chances to see him live.. Hopefully, they make this fight and in Boston!

Hey Jay Sonnen has never ever beat down anyone in his career…for real. Second he has been seen in his usual fetal position in several of his last fights. Last, he was even seen with Damian Mia’s crouch and ass in his face when he got humiliated by that mounted choke. GTFOH he is over and out….He sucks and hits like a bitch for a man of his size. He hasn’t contributed to the sport at all..Wand on the other hand is a legend. I agree with Scotty^^
