Daniel Cormier: Junior dos Santos Has the Best Chance of Beating Cain
“I think Junior dos Santos has the best chance of beating Cain, but the rest, they’re not beating him. They’re not good enough.”
These are strong words for the UFC heavyweight division, and Daniel Cormier has made it clear he feels that the only challenge to his training partner Cain Velasquez’s title is JDS. In a recent interview the Bleacher Report, Cormier discussed the status of the heavyweight division, his potential move to light heavyweight, and what he wants next inside the octagon.
When discussing the heavyweight division, obvious support for his AKA teammate and UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is abundant. Cormier told the Bleacher Report, “They’re not beating Cain,” stating that the man with the best chance to dethrone the champ is the only man to defeat him before, Junior dos Santos. Oddly enough, Cormier doesn’t think anyone else has a micron of hope to beat Cain, saying, “It’s about as honest as I can be with you, they’re not good enough to beat him (Cain).”
In regards to possibly dropping to 205 in the near future, Cormier is still concerned with cutting a large amount of weight in a short period of time. Daniel told the Bleacher Report, “I always thought if I were to go down, I would need a lot of time to do it.” Cormier went on to say, “At the end of the day I can’t cut massive amounts of weight. That’s well documented from my problems at the Olympic Games. But I can diet, and when I’m dieting I can still fight. Can I fight at 205? No, because it’s too much weight to cut in a short period of time. But could I fight a heavyweight fight and just be a little lighter? I think so.” So for now we can expect to see DC competing at heavyweight while dieting and working towards a slow move to light heavyweight.
As for his future plans at heavyweight, the former Strikeforce champion turned UFC contender wants to keep climbing the ranks. What kind of fights is Cormier looking for? Anything that propels him up to the top of the division, Cormier stated, “Any of the higher ranked guys make sense.” DC went on to say, “Also a guy that’s coming off a win. It’s very important, if you look at the UFC matchmaking that’s how it goes. Two guys coming off wins make fights. I think any fight with a guy that’s ranked high and advances my career makes sense. I just want big fights.”
With that being said, Cormier wants to fight on a big card next, and he wants to do so as soon as possible. “When I look at some of these cards, you look at the July card, Anderson Silva and Weidman, I think they need a co-main event. Then in August that Fox Sports 1 card, that would be pretty cool. Any of the big cards I would love to be a part of.”
What does Penn Nation think? Is JDS the only legitimate challenger to Cain’s throne? Should Cormier slowly move to 205?
