Dana White Wants BJ Penn To Retire

“B.J. is too tough for his own good. B.J. might not be knocked out, but the shots B.J. took would’ve knocked out a normal human being. He’s had his head bounced off the canvas like a basketball by Matt Hughes, by Georges St-Pierre and then Rory just did it to him. B.J. Penn has left that octagon looking like a f*cking alien. He’s too tough for his own good. You don’t knock out B.J. Penn. B.J. Penn absorbs every amount of punishment you give him. It doesn’t mean he hasn’t been taking damage. He’s taken a lot of damage, and I don’t want to see him take anymore.”

UFC President Dana White took to last weekend’s post-fight media event to weigh in on the fate and future of two-time UFC champion BJ Penn.

Is the UFC boss being accurate with his assessment and are his claims of damage a fair look at the recent history of BJ Penn?

  1. eric says:

bj is a beast and a true scrapper. i realized that i tune into UFC events only to watch bj penn fight win or lose.

  2. real homies says:

He wouldn’t have taken so much damage if he stayed at lightweight.

  3. JHC says:

BJ IS one of the all time greats. I personally would like to see BJ fight at 155 again. Might need to bring in different trainers / partners for camp because cardio has been an issue for a while. Just be selective about who he fights. BJ is still a (co) main eventer and paydays nowadays are so much larger than when he started. BJ deserves a few more big checks before he retires.

  4. Sasquatch says:

F**k that!… I’m still praying BJ will come back and fight at 155!

  5. KeepItReal says:

BJ is still a badass dude!always a scrapper and can take a punch like no other.wish he would grab same trainers and partners he had in prior fights like Diego,Stevenson and Sherk.i”d like to see him prove haters wrong

  6. KeepItReal says:

BJ still has it in him to be a contender/just not at 170.if he could get cardio back on track LOOK OUT 155ers!BJ is my all time favorite

  7. Ilaijah says:

I truly believe Bj has a lot left in him and only having faith he returns. I always been a fan, win lose retire! But I do believe he will come back. Of course not @170 guys are just way to big. But 55 of course, theres huge guys at 55 to tho (Maynard, grant, Healys pretty big) but if he returns its gotto be at 155 or maybe @45? Be the first ever 3x UFC champ :) I know he can do it, I believe in him either way, by far one of the best talents in the UFC and a true warrior!

  8. doc says:

Penn can still fight at 155 if he wanted to. He won’t ever be a champ again, but he sure would give most of these guys a whipping. If he worked cardio and endurance he would be way too much for most of these guys to handle. Oh well, we’ll never know for sure now.

  9. magoo says:

Give Firas a call and head to Montreal Beej, one more title run at 55 would be freakin exciting…. And yes with that type of training and dedication you could be champ one last time!

    • Thom says:

thats never happening. i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again I think the idea that some fans have that BJ will become amazing again by returning to LW is naive. he hasnt looked good since 2009, seriously. Sure the WW’s are big and strong but BJ is also fighting differently nowadays, he’s a lot less technical just fighting with pure heart and he doesnt have the cardio to do that either. Maybe BJ could make something happen if he did a complete 180 on his training but I doubt that would ever happen. I love BJ and I’d rather see him retire then getting beat up again.

  10. Eddie says:

Penn is past his prime. A return to 155 will not change that. I agree that he should retire.

  11. Slim Charles says:

start having truly elite, professional and serious camps without surfers as training partners (basically go to nova uniao or blackhouse because they welcome him)… or retire…

  12. Alvin says:

BJ- You’ve got to get your cardio up big time. Fight at 145 or 155. You’ve also got to utilize your kicks and shore up your wrestling. Takedowns seem to win points. I know you have your way but it’s time to let that go and be present to who you are today and not what you’ve done. With much respect man…

  13. Ddddddd says:

    Wutup BJ?

  14. Ddddddd says:

I think BJ should start doin Trt,eating Hawaiian moon flower seeds, training with Johnny Cage, playing the drums, join my band, and whatever the hell he wants. What BJ has done will always be what only he can do. Shit,go kick Hughes’ ass and take his job. BJs the toughest motherfunker ever lived.
