Dana White Says Carano And Holm Deals Almost Completed – ‘Cyborg’ Still A Possibility
If you’re talking about women’s MMA, you’re most likely talking about the influx of possible matchups for UFC bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey. If Dana White can get these women signed, that is.
The women I’m speaking of is of no surprise to just about anyone who follows the sport; those women being Gina Carano, Holly Holm and Cristiano “Cyborg” Justino. The former two names being much, much more likely to sign a deal in the near future.
On Wednesday’s edition of “UFC Tonight,” UFC President Dana White said – on the topic of these girls fighting for the UFC – both Gina Carano and Holly Holm are no longer “if”, but “when”.
“Holly Holm and Gina Carano are all a matter of getting a deal done,” White said.
Rumors are flying about the UFC setting up a possible immediate title shot for Carano, if she does in fact return to the cage. And sure, you’d think that the UFC would give Carano a warm-up fight, since she hasn’t been in the cage in about a half-decade… and sure, the fight makes almost no sense on paper (Miesha Tate called it “mockery of women’s MMA.”), but hey – it would obviously be a cash cow for the company. And of course they can’t give her a warm-up fight; what if she lost? I mean, if she’s going to lose, why not lose while making the company a boatload of money. Am I right?
White has also reinvested himself into getting Holly Holm inside the Octagon as well, after a contentious start to thier first-round negotiations, where it was reported that Holm’s management was pushing for a large payday for her debut fight. Apparently things have smoothed out.
That brings us to the woman that White called “Wanderlei Silva in a dress” (I can’t tell if that’s a compliment or an insult), Cris ‘Cyborg’. Dana had this to say about the prospects of signing ‘Cyborg’:
“We know all the issues we’ve had with ‘Cyborg,’ from the steroid stuff to the managers to we don’t even have that weight class, so I don’t even know when she would get into the UFC,” White said. “I used to say never. I don’t say never anymore.”
Sounds to me like Dana is just playing his cards right, to make the most money possible. Carano is obviously the smallest threat to Rousey’s title, just based on her long hiatus from the sport… Holly is a larger threat, but has definite holes in her game that Ronda is tailor-made to exploit. And ‘Cyborg’ is, on paper, the biggest threat to Ronda’s title. So that’s the order of which Dana will no doubt get these contracts straightened out.
I could be wrong. We’ll see. But either way, this year should be a busy one for the UFC women’s bantamweight strap.
