Dana White on Jon Fitch, Expects 100 More Fighter Cuts to Come Soon I UFC News

UFC president Dana White met with the media following today’s UFC 157 pre-fight press conference and shared his thoughts on the release of welterweight contender Jon Fitch and why we should all expect many more cuts to come in the foreseeable future. Here’s what he had to say:

“Jon Fitch is ranked number 9 right now. But he was ranked number one, fought for the title, then he was ranked #2, #3, #6, #7 and now he’s #9. That’s called the downside of your career. He’s lost two fights, one draw and won 1 fight [in his last four bouts]. Jon Fitch can go out now and he can make some money. He gets paid a lot of money to be put on a prelim. He can get a couple more fights and come back to the UFC, it happens every day, all the time. It’s not that he was on this incredible win streak. He has never won a title in his life. I don’t have one ounce of hate for Jon Fitch, I don’t even dislike him. I like Jon Fitch. He can go out on the free market and find out exactly what he’s worth. He will end up somewhere else and if he keeps winning, he will come back. And if does land up somewhere else, he will become a champion, nobody will beat him in any other organization.

We have 470-something guys on contract, ok? We have over 100 guys too many on the roster right now. The blood has not all been spilled yet. There’s more coming. There’s 100 more guys that are going to go.

We are only as good as our last fight. All of us. Me, the UFC and the fighters, we all feel it, when you have a bad fight and you go on a skid, it’s not good for any of us.”

Its funny how this guy justifies the firing of so many people. Hardy 4 fight losing streak, and got finished to guys who weren’t even top 10. Akiyama I cant even remember the last time he won a fight. Fucking lenord Garcia, I dont understand why they keep him either. Fitch loses to Hendricks, thats fair enough, but Hendricks has been recently knocking everyone out. He had a bad night against, Maia dominated him, but he still didnt deserve the cut. Dana is a dumbass he is arguing about how fitch is on the downside and is ranked #9 currently and all that but, UFC keeps guys who are on insane losing streaks that arnt even ranked. Yeh Fitch is lay and pray this and that but Chael sonnen is no different he does the same shit, he is just exciting cuz he has a big mouth. Fuck Dana White, he is a blatant piece of shit. I would rather have him say “yeh we fired Fitch cuz we dont like him”, then make up excuses and justify the wrong they did to a guy who is 14-3-1 by stripping him of his job. No matter how boring Fitch maybe, he didnt deserve it. He also talks about Fitch never winning a title, WTF does that have to do with him being cut?? This bald headed mother fucking tyrant I dont know how he can sleep at nights knowing he and his company stripped so many people of their jobs. Yet this hypocrite piece of shit justifies his wrong doings.

He has to weigh the showmanship vs. the talent sometimes… to keep the business aspect going. It’s a double edged sword though, I would pay to watch some fighters regardless of their technical rank… like Chris Leban, but I can’t stand watching other fighters despite their high ranking. It has to have a business side, after all it’s sold on entertainment… and because of that true fans like you and I get to see these events on the big screens… in our living rooms or our favorite hang outs.

      • Abraham says:

Jake Shields is another wrestler who is extremely boring. Shields vs GSP, Shields vs Herman, and Shields vs Kampmann were all extremely boring fights. Shields is also 2-3 in his last 5 fights. He still isnt cut, im not saying he should be but u get the point im saying. I think Dana white plays favoritism with alot of fighters, its very apperant with giving title shots to people who are undeserving and as of most recent now playing favoritism with cutting people. I use to be a huge fan of Dana White until I learned his ass kissing favoritism towards certain fighters.

        • Charles says:

Couldn’t agree more. Shields is boring as hell to watch. I’m with you on the favoritism too. Maybe he is looking ahead for the female MMA boom that’s happening as well. Still… 470 current fighters is a LOT, and UFC has to be feeling the economy crunch like most other companies. Entertainment industries are often the first to feel pain in tough times.

        • Abraham says:

He talked about Viacom having so much money and they should pay their fighters this and that. But this mother fucker owns the most hottest MMA organization and can’t pay Fitch his maybe 100k salary?? I think UFC has plenty of money they bought strike force for $40 million, and they can’t pay Fitch his 100k that is so weird. Brandon Vera had one exciting fight with shogun and thats it, rest of his fights as of late he got dominated and destroyed like none other. They still keep him around. But its dissapointing to me cuz I use to be a huge fan of Dana and now I learned how much of a prick he is. Freaken Brandon Vera has a bigger salary then Fitch I looked it up on fighter pay thing he made 120k from his fight with elliot marshall. Yet they think Fitch is expensive, he is boring, but lets be honest it is a pretty unfair scummy dirty move.

  2. Anchor man says:

Call it what you want but Jon Fitch cut was undeserving.

    • Charles says:

Perhaps… But personally I never liked watching Fitch fight. That’s just my opinion though.

    • ThaGreenBandit says:

Was never really a Fitch fan, although his Silva fight was pretty good, but I gotta agree with you. Dana can kick out all the bs excuses he wants, but this was undeserving. I feel like he’s trying to insult my intelligence by trying to make me believe otherwise

  3. The Way Of The Dutchman says:

It’s the Ultimate FIGHTING Championship. Not the Ultimate Hold down opponents til the bell rings Championship. DW isn’t saying what he means, he hates Fitching because it makes MMA look bad, abusing the unified rules of mma and incompetent judges rewarding fight-avoiding tactics makes MMA look bad. Fitch has been stinking up fightcards with his way of doing things (can’t bring myself to call it fighting) for years. Now DW finally has the excuse to cut him.

    • Abraham says:

You do realize Anderson Silva has had some of the most boring fights. He was a main event in one some of the shittiest. He is amazing p4p best fighter in the world, but he himself has had some questionable fights. DW is a prick, A guy who has been employed for such a long time, and won so many fights. To cut him the way he did like Fitch is some sort of trash is just disgusting. He plays way too much favoritism, yes Fitch is boring, im not denying that but its so disgusting the way he cut him. It wasnt even like he was on a crazy losing streak. He is 2-3 in his last five fights. There are plenty who are 2-3 boring fighters in UFC currently. His cutting of so many fighters, like Fitch he just tossed him like trash. Dana is a ruthless disgusting tyrant.

      • squid says:

i agree. credit to dana for helping make the UFC what it is today, but he couldn’t have done it without the hard work of the fighters he employs. although, fitch is boring to watch, his fight with erick silva was excellent… and you can’t knock all the hard work fitch puts in. it’s true dana plays favorites, which is wrong for a business like the UFC, but what’s even more disgusting to me, is that he also holds grudges. for an accomplished man, dana is immature. remember at one point in time, fitch was cut temporarily from the UFC for some sort of contract dispute having to do with their images/rights, i believe. i’m pretty sure that had something to do with fitch getting the axe.

  4. nah says:

Fitch wasn’t earning his keep no asses in the seat for what they pay him im pretty sure all the people keep talking about who haven’t yet will in the future

  5. cutsonnen says:

Lets get a cut chael sonnen petition going talk about lay n pray get him out the door!!!!!!! Even Fitch would whoop his ass.

    • real homies says:

let’s cut you instead, out of this conversation. Sonnen’s fighting style is alot more entertaining then fitch, also he is funny as hell when interviewed and he promotes fights like a prize fighter. For sure he couldn’t “whoop his ass”

    • Stockton209 says:

Theres a huge difference between Fitch and Sonnen. Yes Sonnen is widely more marketable but lay and pray? He at least has some offense on the ground and standing up. You did watch Chael knockdown Anderson with boxing multiple times right? Now Fitch, how do you start a fight and less then 30 seconds in have your back taken while standing? Also with all of the wrestling credentials he’s attained youd think he’d be able to actually defend a double leg from a non wrestler. His skills are declining and when on top on the ground the guy doesnt even try to advance into better position. How can you sell fights or if you’re Fitch, win fights, when you’re the one trick pony in the continuously growing talent pool of the UFC?

  6. Drew McGuire says:

It must be hard for Dana to have to look some of his best fighters in the eye and say “thanks for coming out but your services are no longer required”. On the other hand why do fans watch UFC?? Because they want to see the best of the best not some lame ass excuse for a fighter. Nobody want to pay to see the worst of the worlds fighters least of all fans at home who order the events on Pay Per View. I say if you are sliding in the game either leave of your own free will or expect to have the axe come down on you cause you take the energy and excitement out of the UFC by letting not only the fans but others who would kill to be in your position down.

  7. Chris says:

We can say all we want about who deserves to be cut and who doesn’t, based on their skill. As others have commented, it’s just not all about that. I daresay, it’s not even what’s most important. The draw is. If you put on boring fights, which almost every single Fitch fight is, you lose the draw. I would be fine if I never saw Fitch fight again. On the other hand, I’m always excited to see Dan Hardy fight. I like GSP, because he’s just so damn good. He’s pretty boring too, but he’s just so damn good, it makes up for it.

At the end of the day, this is a business. Corporations have to do what’s best for the corporation. That’s actually a part of corporate law. John Fitch fights do not put asses in seats. They put people to sleep. If you’re going to put people to sleep, you need to be undefeated. Have an exciting fighting style, be interesting out of the ring, but don’t be a dud in both areas. I’m happy to see him go from an entertainment perspective, but it’s a shame for him.

  8. doc says:

The only time I enjoyed a Fitch fight was when he fought Penn and GSP. I will not miss him in the UFC. 100 fighters… I wonder who…

  9. deepcountrykauai says:

Bottom line, who’s the boss? Finally the UFC is realizing who sells fights..Stay tuned cause a lot more cuts are coming soon, lot of UFC fighters in vegas are squeezing their butt cheeks right now, anyways farewell & best of luck Jon (smoke break) Fitch…

  10. Jim says:

Never thought I’d say this, but I’m kind of “UFC’d out.”

I work nights on some nights, days on others. I came home, and while surfing I caught a Bellator fight.

Bellator is not the giant UFC is,probably never will be. But I have to say I was entertained watching an MMA fight. I enjoyed the simple fight. Not once did I think, “Why is this guy fighting that guy? He hasn’t earned it?”

I haven’t enjoyed a UFC fight in a long time (that didn’t include BJ Penn.

    Oh well.

  11. Jim says:

I just ran into this on

“You’re telling me that Fitch, who’s already had a better career than 90 percent of active welterweights, and who’s been with the same organization for more than seven years, has priced himself out of a job with $66,000 in show money? Seriously? Take away taxes, training expenses, his management’s cut, and all the other miscellaneous stuff that eats into a fighter’s pay, and that’s not a ton of take-home cash for a night of professional cage fighting. If that’s too much for a guy like Fitch, most other fighters should go ahead and start working on that law school application right now because the future is grim.”

WOW! Good points from Ben Fowlkes at mma junkie

    • doc says:

Nobody wants to watch fitch. His style is boring. That is what it comes down to. His draw is weak and he does not bring in as much money.

Ben Fowlkes telling people to go to law school? I mean telling fighters to go to law school? What a dumbass…

Fitch has done this to himself. Big deal, he can whine and cry but in the end he is no better than the man who makes $40,000 a year and supports his family with that.

  12. jim (again) says:

Bet a union is looking pretty good about now.
