Dana White on Jon Fitch, Expects 100 More Fighter Cuts to Come Soon I UFC News
UFC president Dana White met with the media following today’s UFC 157 pre-fight press conference and shared his thoughts on the release of welterweight contender Jon Fitch and why we should all expect many more cuts to come in the foreseeable future. Here’s what he had to say:
“Jon Fitch is ranked number 9 right now. But he was ranked number one, fought for the title, then he was ranked #2, #3, #6, #7 and now he’s #9. That’s called the downside of your career. He’s lost two fights, one draw and won 1 fight [in his last four bouts]. Jon Fitch can go out now and he can make some money. He gets paid a lot of money to be put on a prelim. He can get a couple more fights and come back to the UFC, it happens every day, all the time. It’s not that he was on this incredible win streak. He has never won a title in his life. I don’t have one ounce of hate for Jon Fitch, I don’t even dislike him. I like Jon Fitch. He can go out on the free market and find out exactly what he’s worth. He will end up somewhere else and if he keeps winning, he will come back. And if does land up somewhere else, he will become a champion, nobody will beat him in any other organization.
We have 470-something guys on contract, ok? We have over 100 guys too many on the roster right now. The blood has not all been spilled yet. There’s more coming. There’s 100 more guys that are going to go.
We are only as good as our last fight. All of us. Me, the UFC and the fighters, we all feel it, when you have a bad fight and you go on a skid, it’s not good for any of us.”
