Dana White on Fights Going All 3 or 5 Rounds: ‘As Long As They’re Exciting Fights’
As the UFC prepares for its next event, UFC on FOX 8, Dana White explained during a conference call that finishes are not the only way to put on an exciting fight. Case in point: UFC flyweight champion and UFC on FOX headliner, Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson.

There is a reason the UFC gives out three post-fight bonuses at each event. Each award- KO of the Night, Submission of the Night and Fight of the Night- highlights a different aspect of what makes MMA the most exciting sport in the world. Fans love to see devastating knockouts and incredible submissions; and while they make an exciting finish for any fight, they are not necessarily indications of a truly exceptional fight.
Look at Dan Henderson’s fight with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 139. That is easily one of the greatest fights there has ever been in MMA; and the two men fought for the full 25-minutes without a KO or submission.
If you ask UFC president Dana White, excitement is just as important, if not more, than a definitive finish. With UFC on FOX 8 coming up next Saturday, White expects nothing short of excitement from headliner and UFC flyweight champion, Demetrious Johnson.
“What we have to do is, ‘Mighty Mouse’ has been on a lot of big cards, he’s going to fight on FOX again. We’re in the building phase of that division. I think that Ben Henderson has fights that have gone to decisions, controversial decisions. Demetrious has gone to decisions. You know as long as they’re exciting fights, there are all different types of fighters. Some guys go in and they knock people out. Some guys pull off submissions, some guys go to decisions and have exciting fights. The last fight with Demetrious was an exciting fight.”
Indeed, 2 of his past 4 fights have earned FOTN honors- a fact that speaks to Johnson’s action-packed style of fighting as much as his skills.
While we can never know the result of a fight before it happens (hi, Chris Weidman), looking at UFC on FOX 8, we do know one thing: ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson will put on a hell of a fight.
