Dana White ‘guarantees’ GSP vs. Rory MacDonald UFC fight
Since “Ares” didn’t exaclty blow “The Juggernaut” out of the water, many are wondering what is next for the Canadian welterweight standout.
UFC president Dana White hinted that Rory’s next bout may be against “The Ruthless One” Robbie Lawler, who was also victorious at last weekends UFC on FOX 8 event, scoring a 2nd round KO over Bobby Voelker.
If Rory continues to win, he will eventually find himself in position to challenge for the welterweight title, currently held by teammate Georges St. Pierre (24-2 MMA, 18-2 UFC).
While both men claim that a teammate vs. teammate fight is out of the question, UFC president Dana White disagrees. Here is what DW had to say on the matter during the UFC World Press Tour stop in New York:
Those two will fight. Here’s what they’re not going to do: they’re not going to publicly sit here and call each other out and go up and see each other in the gym and face each other. They’re both professionals. They understand that they’re both on this path to collide, and I think when the day comes, they’ll deal with it then. I think that’s the way they’re looking at it, First of all, Rory lives in his house, meaning his gym. He lives in Montreal, trains with him, Georges says all kinds of good things about him. How weird would it be after the fight the other night if he got on the mic and said, ‘I want Georges St. Pierre and I want his belt’? It would be a little awkward flying back to Montreal and training on Monday, I think these guys are handling it like professionals, doing their thing and when the day comes when they’re there, I guarantee you they’ll fight.
A bout between MacDonald and St. Pierre is intriguing, but it will require some assistance in order for the proposed match-up to come to fruition. First of all, GSP will have to successfully defend his belt against #1 contender Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 later this year.
Secondly, “Ares” will likely have to score at least one more victory over a top-contender before getting a shot at his mentor.
If Dana White’s “guarantee” proves true, who do you see winning between the two Tristar Gym members? Let’s hear it Penn Nation!
