Dana White Confirms Gustafsson Gets Title Shot With Win Over Mousasi, What About Machida vs. Henderson? | UFC NEWS

Dana White told reporters at the UFC on Fuel 7 media scrum, “If he (Alexander Gustafsson) beats Mousasi, this is a big fight for both of those guys, obviously. If Mousasi beats Gustafsson, he skyrockets right to the top of that division. As far as Gustafsson goes, if he beats Mousasi in that fight, he’s in line for a title shot.” So the real question lies on whether or not people can take what Dana White says, when it comes to title contenders, seriously.

Especially if you were to look at who’s about to fight Jon Jones for the title. Chael Sonnen is coming off a second round TKO loss to UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, and he is the man chosen to be Jon Jones’ next challenger. Sonnen has only won 2 of his last 4 bouts but he was able to craftily talk his way into a title shot in a heavy weight class, against a larger, stronger and possibly more talented champion.

All prior event aside Gustafsson vs Jones is a very interesting match-up. They are similar in build, both coming in at 6’4″ with long arms and legs that seem to give their opponents fits on the feet. They’re both very young, and they both have the same desire to be the best 205 pounder in the world. So there is definitely a reason for fans to want to see this fight alone from Gustafsson’s 6 fight win streak, 7 if he gets through Gegard Mousasi.

With Dana White’s promise of a Gustafsson title shot fans are left wonder what will happen to the Winner of Henderson vs Machida, a fight only a little more than a week out. We were all left to assume the winner of that fight would be the next in line to fight Jon Jones, either Dan Henderson, the man who was supposed to fight Jones back in September, or Lyoto Machida, the guy won the so called “greatest finish” when he knocked out Ryan Bader and was told he was the next in line. What about these to worthy opponents, and whats to happen to them in the LightHeavyweight division after thier fight next Saturday?

If Alexander Gustafsson whats to leave an image of who is to fight for the title next he will have to beat Mousasi and beat him convincingly. Anything short of a finish might take a title shot right out of his hands.

  1. Quazzi says:

lol does the zuffa and dana hate hendo? Seems like there are always taking title shot opportunities away from him

    • WTF says:

No they don’t hate hendo, they just know he doesn’t stand a chance in hell to beat Jones, the dude is old, susceptible to injuries and his cardio is not there. Sad to say he’ll never be a ufc champ again.

    • squid says:

haha i was wondering the same thing because it really seems that way to me.

  2. Sasquatch says:

This is the match to make IF he beats Gegard. Everyone knows what would happen to Hendo and we’ve already seen Machida so bring on “The Mauler”!

  3. BG says:

I love the bias of authors on this site. I also enjoy how chael was crafty and talked his way into a title shot. THERE IS NOBODY ELSE FOR JONES TO FIGHT RIGHT NOW.

Every fighter who makes more sense, HAS A FIGHT BOOKED. Jesus let it go. Chael has a 2% chance of winning? Even Dana talks about who’s next for Jon, completely dismissing Chael.

Why should Jon sit and not make money when he’s ready to fight? Chael will most likely lose baddly. The PPV will sell, A LOT. Jon, Chael, the UFC, and everyone on the card will make a lot of money. Nobody’s career will suffer in the long run, it will actually help many people, including Jon.

and yes, Zuffa hates Hendo. Ever since he left for SF

  4. Big Daddy says:

Chael didn’t talk his way to a title fight, he just simply accepted the challenge when nobody else would.

  5. john says:

who fuckin cares who is next. Jon will beat them all and send them on their way.

  6. PEE PEE says:

JONES HAS FOUGHT WASHED UP FIGHTERS WHO ARE IN THE MID 30s. MID 30S OR MIDDLEWEIGHTS. RAMPAGE, RASHAD,SHOGUN,MACHIDA,CHAEL,VITOR,BONNAR. ALEXANDER IS YOUNG AND IN SHAPE AND JUST AS TALL. HES GONA CAUSE PROBLEMS FOR JONES.

    TRULY YOURS,
    PEE PEE

    • Ainokea says:

Mahu name PEE PEE, but you speak da truth.

    • Mellow says:

you forgot Vlad isnt he like 100 or something?

    • magoo says:

Are you fukcing kidding me that list that you mentioned was the who’s who in the LHW div, and if it weren’t for Jon Bones Jones they would all probably still be in the running! Don’t forget what he did to Bader and Machida Jones is the best fighter in the game today bar none!

    • magoo says:

P.S they may be the same height but Bones will still have an 8 inch reach advantage, Gus will be no different the all the “older” fighters….he too will lose!

    • GRT 3000 says:

He fought Ryan “the Master” Bader…he’s not washed up and old. JBJ made short work of him. Vitor didn’t look to washed up when he almost tore his arm off. Machida and Shogun are by no means washed up either. JBJ is just the real deal, and Gustaffson is going to lose like the rest of em’

  7. 123 says:

i agree, what will the idiots say when he dominates at heavyweight too.

  8. PEE PEE says:

ALL OLD FIGHTERS ON THERE WAY OUT MAN. VLAD IS LIKE 42. WELL IF IT DOESNT WORK OUT FOR JONES IN HEAVYWEIGHT HE CAN ALWAYS DROP BACK DOWN 2 LIGHT HEAVY AND FIGHT ANOTHER MIDDLEWEIGHT THAT WOULD BE COOL. SMH

    TRULY YOURS,
    PEE PEE

PS AND BADER SUCKS HE GOT KNOCKED OUT BY TITO!!

  9. Drew says:

Dana said somewhat positive statements about Dan came back but I dunno he either has something againest him still for leaving for more $, really thinks he has no chance in hell, or he objectively believes gusta can give bones more a run for his $

  10. The Way Of The Dutchman says:

So what if Mousasi wins ? The guy who beats the #1 becomes the #1 right?

    • Sasquatch says:

One would think so but that’s not how the UFC works, unless of course he destroys Gus in devastating fashion. Gegard’s far to respectful and soft spoken to “Sonnen” his way into a title shot, he’ll have to do his talking in the cage and earn his shot the old fashion way.. and I have no doubt he will.
