Dana White Assesses Ellenberger V. MacDonald
Number 3 and 4 contenders in the UFC’s welterweight division, Jake Ellenberger (pictured) and Rory MacDonald, are set to square off July 27 at UFC on FOX 8. UFC President Dana White said that the winner of this fight will be very close to a title shot.

As Jake Ellenberger and Rory MacDonald prepare to fight one another at UFC on FOX 8 on July 27, one thing is for sure: this is a big fight for both men.
Big enough to place them at the top of the division, certainly, but according to UFC president Dana White, talk of fighting welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is still premature.
“For Jake,” White told MMAjunkie.com, “a win over Rory is a big fight for him. For Rory, a win over Jake is a big fight for him, too. As you continue to fight the best in the world, you’re building your resume and climbing up the ladder and getting that experience.
“There’s a lot more that goes into fighting another guy that’s the best in the world than just getting your way to GSP.”
The UFC has the two ranked with Rory MacDonald as number 3, and Ellenberger as number 4 contenders in the welterweight division. They are surpassed only by Johny Hendricks, who will be fighting champion Georges St. Pierre in November, and Carlos Condit.
A win for Ellenberger or MacDonald places either man in a position to fight the winner of Carlos Condit-Martin Kampmann, a fight set to take place next month. In fact, the way the 170-lb division has taken shape, it would be probable that the losers of both fights could also face each other as their next fight.
All that speculation, of course, will have to wait first and foremost for next Saturday night.
“This is a great fight,” White said of MacDonald and Ellenberger. “Both guys are explosive, dynamic, finishers, and two of the top guys in that division. Obviously, the guy who wins this fight is right up there and close to a title shot.”
