Cruz vs. Barao Trumps Aldo vs. Lamas for Main Event Slot at UFC 169
The title unification bout between interim UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao and champion Dominick Cruz has taken top billing at UFC 169.
Previously thought to be the main event, a fight between UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and Ricardo Lamas will now be in the co-main event spot.
Cruz has been sidelined with a knee injury since 2011, and while he has been gone, Barao has been on a tear in the UFC, beating the likes of Brad Pickett, Scott Jorgensen and Urijah Faber, the latter being for the interim title. Since winning the title, Barao has defended it twice against Eddie Wineland and Michael McDonald.
Aldo, a man who is undefeated in Zuffa competition and holding a current winning streak of 16 is coming off a victory against “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung at UFC 163. Lamas, long thought to be the dark horse of the featherweight division, will get his chance to step in against Aldo in February.
UFC 169 takes place Feb. 1 2014 in Newark, New Jersey, for the UFC’s annual Super Bowl weekend show.
