Cody McKenzie’s Fights With Tags Still On His Shorts, ‘Embarrasses’ White
Well… that’s a new one.
Cody McKenzie decided to fight old-school tonight in his decision loss to Sam Stout. Not in his fight style – that was rather flat and dull, to be honest – but rather, in his preparation for the fight.
It’s not 100% clear as to why McKenzie still had the price tags on his shorts as he entered the Octagon, but he did. Much to the embarrassment off Dana White.
“Yeah how did ya like that one? That was fantastic right?, said the UFC boss. What that was was UFC amateur hour. We have a guy backstage that polices all the things, when you got a guy going out there…first of all, if it’s not bad enough that he’s out there with basketball shorts on, how about that he’s still got the price tag on the shorts during the fight! Yeah, so it was pretty embarrassing.”
When asked why Cody didn’t have his fight shorts white replied.
“That’s one of the weirdest things I’ve ever seen, and it’s even weirder that we let it happen.”
“Maybe he was going to fight in his jeans and said ‘well, maybe I should get some shorts. I don’t know. Cody McKenzie’s a strange dude. But it’s not Cody McKenzie’s fault that happened tonight, it’s the UFC’s fault. We’re here for a show on Fox, and it’s pretty damn embarrassing. Pretty embarrassing. I could not be more embarrassed by this. I don’t even know what to say. We’re stupid. I was pissed.”
Thankfully however, Herb Dean noticed the dangling pieces of paper, and ripped the tags off prior to the start of the bout. Something his opponent Sam Stout happened to notice (as well as another detail of the newly-purchased gear):
“I saw Herb Dean rip off the price tag on his shorts, but I didn’t notice he had pockets,” Stout said. “Cody does everything a bit different.”
Unfortunately Herb Dean missed a tag, and Cody was able to enter the Octagon with it dangling from the side of his sponsor-less shorts.
Hopefully this doesn’t end with Dana…. “tagging” and bagging… Cody from the UFC.
… yeah, I said it.
