Longtime UFC fighter, Clay Guida, will step into the Octagon against Chad Mendes this weekend at UFC 164. Though many favor Mendes, Guida says that he will bring something the Team Alpha Male fighter has never seen.
“I’m going out there with a skill set for Chad Mendes that he hasn’t seen before. He’s gonna see some things that are very unexpected from my last couple fights and my other fights in the UFC… I see the prize at the end, and that’s getting that featherweight belt. I know what I set out to do, what I put my mind to do, and with the hard work every day, I’m gonna be champion one day. People want to call me a journeyman, they want to call me a steppingstone, one day they’re gonna call me champ. Mark my words. It’s just a matter of time.”
The two are set to fight on the main card of UFC 164, which takes place in Milwaukee, WI. Guida is coming off a controversial split-decision victory over Hatsu Hioki, his first win after 2 consecutive losses. Mendes, on the other hand, has collected three straight 1st-round KO victories since his loss to featherweight champion, Jose Aldo. That loss is the only one on Mendes’ professional career to date.
The fight is a huge opportunity for Guida who, though he is a recognizable face in the UFC, has never fought for a title shot. A decisive win over the number-one contender could put Guida very close to a shot for the belt.
