Chuck Liddell is not impressed with GSP’s performance

Former UFC light heavyweight champion and Hall of Famer, Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell, appeared on ESPN’s ‘SportsNation’ on Tuesday for a wide-ranging interview.

When asked how the sport has changed since his retirement in 2010, Liddell suggested that some of the UFC’s new champions have shown a tendency to ‘play it safe,’ in particular GSP:

“I think some people make complaints about some of the champions playing it safe,” said Liddell. “I understand it, but I don’t want to watch it. I think St. Pierre is a great fighter. He’s awesome… I just don’t like watching him play safe. And he fights safe. I mean against Diaz he spiral rode him for half the fight. I don’t like watching that.”

“Now, for him to be able to do that to guys that are at that level is impressive. But it’s not exciting to me. And the way they chose the fight. I mean ‘I’ve been beating this guy up for four rounds, I’m still just gonna win the last round. I’m not gonna try to finish him. I’m not gonna go after him. I’m not gonna take any risks.’ From a coaching standpoint and a manager’s standpoint, I understand. It makes sense. It’s big money now. But from a fan’s standpoint, I don’t want to watch it, [not] unless I think he’s fighting someone that can make him fight. I actually think this next fight coming up, I’m excited, he’s fighting Johny Hendricks and I think Hendricks is going to make him fight.”

St. Pierre is scheduled to defend his UFC welterweight title against #1 contender Johny Hendricks at next month’s UFC 167 event in Las Vegas.

Do you agree with Liddell’s assessment of Georges St. Pierre’s ‘play it safe’ fight style? Let’s hear it Penn Nation!

    Agreed.

How fast we forget the Carlos Condit fight? That was an exciting fight to me. You could see the difference in GSP’s ground and pound strikes and attitude.

  3. allmightysandman says:

I wish GSP would go for the finish more too…I think he’s capable.

Maybe chuck should have tried to be a tiny bit less “exciting” in his last few fights rather than get KO’d his last three outings, but he stuck to his guns I guess.

  4. james says:

I saw the size of hendrix recently. HE looks like he’s using to much test. Bloated as shit. Really dude?
Honestly the 170 division was the most exciting and is now far from it. I’m sure the prelims will be more exciting than this fight, which in my eyes will play out like GSP Koscheck.

I dont care that they are all on drugs. Its a sport. A game. who cares who wins? I want to see some entertaining “martial arts” not some bullshit one dimensional shit. I loved how guys like JDS,Vitor, and Jacare are adding real moves into there arsenals. I dont care who is the better wrestler. Or who throws the best jab in mma. I want to see ninja spin kicks like Renan barao, and new techniques like Wonder Boy.

Thjanks for the space to comment here :)

  5. Badash says:

I agree, I found it much more exciting watching Chuck get knocked out by Franklin, Shogun, Evans, Rampage….

  6. Supe says:

    Georges the Canadian ball kicker!

  7. KIDD433 says:

@UFC 84… Your giving GSP too much credit. That fight was exciting because Condit was active off his back and took it to him. GSP was a little more aggressive, but then look at the Diaz fight. As a Champ, your job is too fight and entertain. Not play it safe, dry hump and try to win by points. I’m glad a real former champ hit it on the nose. And acknowledged that, and said publicly what a lot of other people won’t. GSP is boring as shit, and would’ve been cut long ago had he not stale mated the belt. Look at Okami

  8. BGC says:

GSP is Great fighter He beat the hell out of Josh Koscheck and Carlos Condit was Awsome fight Nick Diaz he beat him hands down. Chuck last few fights getting his ass handed to him he got no room to talk.. just saying …

    • Nate "THE ROID CHEAT"Marquardt says:

GSP has damaged his legacy beyond REPAIR unless you are one of his desperado CANUCK fans who are so desparate for a Canadian sports hero because YOU have so very few up there.

GSP is a BOREFEST at best and his 76″ freakish reach is the only reason he is able to use that boring ass jabberfesting to out point everyone. Matt Serra RUINED GSP and then Greg Jackson ruined him even more.

Canada should be ashamed of GSP for fighting so cowardly but instead they buy his PPV’s at a record insane pace which is laughable at best.

BY the way why don’t you ask your hero GSP why he demanded the list of banned substances that WADA tests for?

ANSWER: HE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THE CUTTING EDGE PED HE IS CURRENTLY USING ISN’T ON THAT LIST. GSP IS A CHEAT AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN. and I’M NOT TALKING ABOUT HIS GREASING. everyone outside Canada knows GSP is and always has been a ROID cheat

  9. KIDD433 says:

    +1 Nate the Cheat

  10. Sandgroper 101 says:

Watching GSP is a little bit (apart from Koscheck and joes ) going for a shit (ie it’s a good part of my day) and after doing the faeces I’m pretty stocked but wait there’s another shit in tank 2. So that shit had given me no joy I should have waited 40 mins and I would have donee (complete load). And ditto GSP I love your style and yOur skill and manner. But your fights remind me of the split load it’s just not as satisfying .you need to break arms. Cause I don’t know if your athletic jabs will make it thru Hendrix beard.
.To make your legacy all the better you need to take some dudes out.
Start off with Hendrix when he comes in fast with his 2 combo ( they come in pretty slow but they have weight take it to him hard get fucken angry
