Cheick Kongo Follows Rampage to Bellator FC
By JAKE CHASTAIN
| It’s been a huge day for Bellator FC. Early this morning we found out that Quinton Jackson had inked a deal with the organization and shortly after rumors started circulating that former UFC heavyweight Cheick Kongo was working on a deal with the SPIKE TV based organization. Now, according to MMA Weekly, Kongo has also officially signed with Bellator today (June 4th, 2013). Bellator, with their summer series tournaments in both ‘Rampage’s’ and Kongo’s weight classes (LHW & HW) just about to kick off (tournament’s start on June 19th), has just scored some outrageous talents to fill in as replacements in those tournaments if there is an injury to one of the competitors.
Kongo, who has made it clear to the media that he was not cut by the UFC but rather had turned down a four-fight-contract, will be a huge addition to the Bellator heavyweight lineup. Kong debuted in the UFC in 2006 and competed inside the UFC octagon 18 times. He went 11-6-1 over his run in the UFC and was always a KO threat to any heavyweight that he was facing. Kongo has faced top-tier fighters for the past seven years and with his experience and power will be a huge threat to Alexander Volkov’s Bellator Heavyweight Title. But he has to make a big splash coming out of the gates. Kongo has been knocked-out in 2 of his last 3 fights and needs to win his next fight to stay relevant. Could his next fight be for the belt or will he have to rattle off one or two before Bellator gives him a shot? I’m sure we’ll find out soon.
With the signing of Kongo Bellator continues to gain steam as they try to continue to grow and expand in the MMA world. Today was a huge step in making them a more legitimate organization and somewhat keeping pace with the UFC as both Jackson and Kongo will pull good ratings for the company…if they can combine their star-power with wins. That’s the key. Both men are in the latter part of their careers and winning is the only key to making today a good day for Bellator.
What do all of you here at BJPenn.com think? Was today a success for Bellator or do you think these signings wont pan out very well for them? Let’s hear it Penn Nation!
