Chael Sonnen’s capacious personality and quick wit has landed him in the seat of an equally quick car.
The UFC fighter and FOX sports analyst was named “Honorary Pace Car Driver” for The Profit on CNBC 500, which will take place at Phoenix International Raceway on Sunday, March 2. His participation in the race – which includes pre-race ceremonies, multiple appearances throughout the day at the PIR, and leading the drivers to the green flag, signifying the start of the race – was announced on Thursday, by PIR president Bryan R. Sperber.
Sonnen had this to say about being part of this large NASCAR event:
“As a fan of NASCAR, I am honored to be a part of the upcoming event at Phoenix,” said Sonnen. “I really respect these drivers that go out there and put it on the line to win the race and give the fans a great show.”
Sonnen is one of the most popular fighters in the history of the UFC, as well as one of the most polarizing. His next fight will see him do battle against longtime rival, Wanderlei Silva, this May.
