Chael Sonnen vs. Mauricio Rua Set for UFC on FOX Sports 1 #1 Main Event

As reported on UFC Tonight, Chael Sonnen (27-13-1) will face Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua (21-7) in the main event of the inaugural FOX Sports 1 event on August 17th. The card will take place at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.

This fight came about after an odd turn of events that once again saw Sonnen playing promoter and once again saw him granted a fight that he vigorously pursued.

Rua was supposed to fight in the co-main event of UFC 161 on June 15th against Antontio Rogerio Nogueira, but after Nogueira was injured earlier this week, Shogun was left without an opponent.

Enter: Chael Sonnen.

Sonnen came out swinging, calling Nogueira a ‘chicken’ then calling out Rua in an attempt to fight him at UFC 161 in the same slot.

A series of legal issues nixed any hopes Sonnen had to fight on that card but also forced the UFC to remove Rua from the card all together. Now the two will face off two months after UFC 161.

I think Chael should get into the hotdog business, because MMA hasn’t been working out for him lately

I’m glad Shogun gets time to prepare because this would have been a boring fight with him on his back the whole time.
I’m not into this match considering Shoguns been refining his boxing but it will be interesting seeing if he can stuff the takedown. If he can stuff it Chaels gonna pay.

He should have just fought Wanderlei, cuz Shogun is going to eat his heart for dinner! Shogun has a very good game off of his back if he’s not tired. I have a feeling Shogun is aware of this and doesn’t want to lose fights because of a small gas tank. I seriously doubt Chael will have what it takes to tire him on the feet (striking or clinch work against the cage), so he has to get it done by holding him down and with continuous pressure. I really want to see if Chael can dominate LHW’s like he did MWs w his wrestling. Size and strength mean a lot when skill level and technique aren’t too far apart. I don’t think Shogun’s leg kicks will be an issue because of the takedowns, but his Muay Thai/ and BJJ could get it done if he can stay off of his back or sweep if he gets there. This looks like a great fight! I’m picking Shogun by TKO, and it might be brutal.
