Chael Sonnen Thinks JDS Should Fire Cornermen For Taking Years Off His Life

Everyone’s favorite analyst, hype-man, and opinionated troublemaker Chael Sonnen had some choice words for Junior Dos Santos’ corner man in a recent Q&A in Manchester, England. He expressed a sense of negligence on the part of Cigano’s corner after the October 19th fight against defending Heavyweight Champion, Cain Velasquez.

“Junior Dos Santos’ cornerman needs to be cut, period. That was beyond inappropriate, that they sent him back out there. The doctor comes in twice, what that doctor was looking for I have no idea. The referee didn’t stop the fight, though he should have. Ultimately, it defaults to your cornerman, who you trust, who is like a father figure, and that guy let Junior Dos Santos down, period. The commission licenses these cornermen. I don’t have the foggiest idea why; I guess just to take their $25. That should be the first cornerman that’s suspended, that was beyond wrong what he did. You do not stop the fight when your fighter can no longer continue. You stop the fight when your fighter can no longer win. The second your guy can’t win, you get him out of there. That fight should have been stopped way earlier. It knocked years off of Junior’s life and career, that cornerman should be fired.”

Ultimately, this leads me (and probably many other fans and fighters) to wonder; when, exactly, is the point where you realize that you can not win? There are plenty of terrific UFC fights that only shot their way into the top 100 because of a devastating, unforeseen upset. One of my personal favorites even includes Sonnen: the infamous Silva v Sonnen I. The creed of almost any fighter is to not be pulled out when they still have a chance, and with this sport one well placed, hazy punch can be the difference between contender and champion.
Give me your thoughts! Does Chael’s statement have
