Chael Sonnen Dismisses Fight With Wanderlei: “I don’t have any opponent”

Despite the interest of both fighters and a majority of MMA fans, it seems Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen may not fight after all.  At least that’s what Chael Sonnen is saying now.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past ten days, you have at least heard about the match up between Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen.  Sonnen called out Silva immediately after defeating Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at last week’s UFC Fight Night 26.  Silva responded with utmost interest.  But alas, something went awry.

Chael Sonnen spoke with MMA Junkie this past weekend, and for his part, Sonnen seemed quite certain that the fight with Silva was not an option.

As it stands right now, there’s no opponent… I know ‘Lil Nog’ is going to fight with ‘Shogun,’ so he’s off the table, and the real side of it, too, is that I just got done.  I just got out of the ring exactly one week ago, so I started back for practice today… and from here on, I’m back at it.

But I don’t have any opponent.  I’d really like to be part of the 20th anniversary show.  I’m really looking to be part of the St-Pierre-Hendricks card.

While this may shock many fans, Sonnen could be emphasizing a point UFC President Dana White made last week.

Last week, White spoke out about Wanderlei Silva demanding Pay-Per-View points.  The UFC President stated that such a demand would not be met, adding about Wanderlei, “so I guess he’s gonna retire.”

Now that Sonnen has spoken out, it seems the UFC has killed the fight.  Negotiations could be continuing between Silva and the UFC in the meantime, of course.  We will just have to wait and see.
