Cesar Gracie Wants UFC Fighter For Gilbert Melendez | Still Prefers Penn Or Pettis
“Melendez’s situation is complex right now. We still don’t have an opponent, date or place set. They said he could fight in San Jose but it’ll probably change. They mentioned Josh Thomson but then said it was not going to happen. It depends on the relationship between Dana White (UFC president) and Showtime (TV channel that broadcasts and managers Strikeforce). That’s the problem. I spoke to Joe Silva (UFC’s matchmaker) and he told me maybe some UFC fighters will go to Strikeforce. We would really like to see him fighting Pettis or BJ, but we are still not sure about what’s going to happen.”
Cesar Gracie is still campaigning for his pupil, Gilbert Melendez” target=”_blank”>Gilbert Melendez, to be matched up with a UFC import and he still desires either BJ Penn or Anthony Pettis.
We reported a few days ago that Cesar was confirming Gil’s spot on the San Jose Strikeforce card in May, and at that time he was also requesting a fight against Penn or Pettis.
But how will the UFC talk any of their current contenders into making a promotional switch?
Should Cesar lower his expectations a bit, what are your thoughts?

point being gilbert is one of the best, and zuffa wanted him to stay in strikeforce so they have some “star power” but now if they don’t give him something to remain one of the best they have effectively screwed him.. I dont think asking for BJ is good tho, since BJ hasnt shown interest in comin back yet..

Lets hope that he gets a good fight, I would have liked him against Eddie Alvarez, but he’s set to fight Aoki.

So go to the UFC then. If you want the best then you need to make a compromise. Just because you don’t want to have to fight your teammate does not mean you get to call the shots and whine about people leaving the best MMA org to fight you. You are not in the “big show” and it is because of one thing. You wont fight Nate Diaz. Get over it before it starts to cause tension in your relationship. There will be resentment at some point so you might as well get in the UFC and fight the best. And get a a title shot.
Gilbert ****ed up by signing the contract and now he wants to bitch about not having challengers. Ufc fighters are not going to demote themselves to strikeforce just to fight Gilbert. He’s not even considered a P4P fighter because of the talent he was fighting.

I think, although melendez is a good fighter, asking for penn or petis is out of his league. Both those fighters are very tough. I’m sure in the end it would be a great fight but I think in both bouts we would see melendez come up short
b.j might beat him, I think it would be close as penn lost twice to Frankie and I fell gilbert and frankie are pretty even. Pettis would lose I think. aoki is one of the best in the world IMO but gilbert schooled him, IMO pettis grappling isn’t nearly on that level and if Melendez doesn’t get knocked out i think he taps him out.
