Cesar Gracie Wants UFC Fighter For Gilbert Melendez | Still Prefers Penn Or Pettis

“Melendez’s situation is complex right now. We still don’t have an opponent, date or place set. They said he could fight in San Jose but it’ll probably change. They mentioned Josh Thomson but then said it was not going to happen. It depends on the relationship between Dana White (UFC president) and Showtime (TV channel that broadcasts and managers Strikeforce). That’s the problem. I spoke to Joe Silva (UFC’s matchmaker) and he told me maybe some UFC fighters will go to Strikeforce. We would really like to see him fighting Pettis or BJ, but we are still not sure about what’s going to happen.”

Cesar Gracie is still campaigning for his pupil, Gilbert Melendez” target=”_blank”>Gilbert Melendez, to be matched up with a UFC import and he still desires either BJ Penn or Anthony Pettis.

We reported a few days ago that Cesar was confirming Gil’s spot on the San Jose Strikeforce card in May, and at that time he was also requesting a fight against Penn or Pettis.

But how will the UFC talk any of their current contenders into making a promotional switch?

Should Cesar lower his expectations a bit, what are your thoughts?

    “lower his expectations?”

never… he wouldn’t be doing his job if he lowered his expectations… if i was gilbert and paying cesar money he better be askin them to bring bruce lee back from the dead for a fight and if we have to settle for fighting bj or pettis then oh well..

point being gilbert is one of the best, and zuffa wanted him to stay in strikeforce so they have some “star power” but now if they don’t give him something to remain one of the best they have effectively screwed him.. I dont think asking for BJ is good tho, since BJ hasnt shown interest in comin back yet..

  2. Edwin Rentas Jr. says:

Dumb as hell. No one in their right mind would leave the UFC to go to Strikeforce. It would be a downgrade to leave.

  3. true mma says:

Give it up cesar, Gilbert just isn’t that good. No respectable fighter will drop down to strikeforce especially to fight Gilbert. There’s nothing to gain nobody wants that sorry strikeforce belt. They want that ufc gold.

    • your mom says:

Gilbert not that good? He has two losses and they are both decisions. He has beat Clay Guida who is still in the UFC. Your theory sucks balls

      • deez nuts says:

his theory might be sucking balls but your mouth is suckin dick, he has win over old school clay guida. NO FIGHTER IS GOOD UNTIL THEY PROVE IT IN THE UFC WHERE ALL THE MOTHERFUCKING TALENT IS, so get that to ur head and im not saying hes bad im saying we dont know until we see him fight high caliber fighters not like that slow ass japanese dude kawajawire or whatever the fuck his name is UFC = NBA
Strikeforce = NBA D LEAUGE OR WNBA

  4. Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

This probably means someone is getting cut from the UFC LW division.

  5. magoo says:

Might as well send Guida over there to kick Gilberts ass,and shut little ceasars mouth, you got nothing to lose Clay your never gonna be the UFC 55 champ so go on over and get Gilberts 55 Strikeforce belt,I’m confident that you would do it!

    • Gouldx87 says:

that wouldn’t be a bad move for Clay really, he stands a good chance of winning that fight and holding the belt for a bit over there

    • Donnybrook says:

      Excellent idea Magoo!

      • allmightysandman says:

yeah…i agree brother Magoo…Clay is either a gate keeper in the ufc or he can be a top dog in s/f.

    • bryan 7 says:

OMG guida is the most OVERRATED FIGHTER EVER!! HE “WINS” FIGHTS HE LOSES CAUSE THE UFC JUDGES LOVE GUYS THAT JUST HUG EACH OTHER, ZERO KNOCKOUTS, OWNED BY HENDERSON, would have got DQ’d in Pride for that “win” over pettis. WHAT A JOKE!

  6. Gouldx87 says:

Why does Ceasar keep campaigning for a fight with B.J i was still under the impression BJ’s retired, isnt he?

  7. sam says:

Guida already had his ass handed to him by Gilbert. Guida was the champ at strikeforce n Melendez beat him.

  8. KnuckleSandwich says:

BJ is retired Cesar. Shut your whore mouth

  9. Nick says:

Cesar needs to shut up. No one is going to downgrade from the UFC to Strikeforce. Just have Gilbert come to the UFC.

  10. ggb says:

Lets hope that he gets a good fight, I would have liked him against Eddie Alvarez, but he’s set to fight Aoki.

  11. jbeamazing says:

would be nice but gil probably wont see talent till he gets to the ufc ya know the best talent

  12. PJ Benn says:

    Give him Melvin Guillard

  13. best opinion on the nets says:

So go to the UFC then. If you want the best then you need to make a compromise. Just because you don’t want to have to fight your teammate does not mean you get to call the shots and whine about people leaving the best MMA org to fight you. You are not in the “big show” and it is because of one thing. You wont fight Nate Diaz. Get over it before it starts to cause tension in your relationship. There will be resentment at some point so you might as well get in the UFC and fight the best. And get a a title shot.

  14. true mma says:

Gilbert fucked up by signing the contract and now he wants to bitch about not having challengers. Ufc fighters are not going to demote themselves to strikeforce just to fight Gilbert. He’s not even considered a P4P fighter because of the talent he was fighting.

  15. Donnybrook says:

Do us a favor Cesar and shut up until you have something relevant to say… and quit calling out BJ you moron!, he’s retired for now and if he comes back he’s coming for Nick in the UFC, not to f*ckin Strikeforce… give your head a shake and quit insulting BJ .

  16. jordan stewart says:

whoever doesn’t think gil is good all because he’s in strikeforce is an absolute fool.

  17. P.Jrooney says:

how about cesar gracie get in the cage? Always wanting this & that. The only time he did, he got smashed in like 30seconds by frank shamrock or someone

  18. james says:

I think, although melendez is a good fighter, asking for penn or petis is out of his league. Both those fighters are very tough. I’m sure in the end it would be a great fight but I think in both bouts we would see melendez come up short

    • bryan 7 says:

b.j might beat him, I think it would be close as penn lost twice to Frankie and I fell gilbert and frankie are pretty even. Pettis would lose I think. aoki is one of the best in the world IMO but gilbert schooled him, IMO pettis grappling isn’t nearly on that level and if Melendez doesn’t get knocked out i think he taps him out.
