Cain Velasquez vs. Frank Mir Set For UFC 146; Winner To Receive A Title Fight
“Verbal agreements are in for a No. 1 contender match between former UFC world heavyweight champions Frank Mir and Cain Velasquez at UFC 146, May 26 in Las Vegas,” UFC president Dana White said.
The heavyweights will be out in full force at UFC 146, as former UFC heavyweight champions, Cain Velasquez and Frank Mir are now set to meet, with the winner getting a UFC heavyweight title shot at a later date. The news comes via FoxSports.com.
Cain Velasquez is coming off his first career loss, as he was knocked out by Junior Dos Santos this past November during the UFC’s kick off show on Fox. The fight was Cain’s first fight back since he won the title from Brock Lesnar at UFC 121, and also his first fight back after a long layoff from shoulder surgery. Without question, Cain will be looking to make a statement by beating Mir, and pushing himself back into title contention.
Frank Mir is coming off one of the most stunning submission wins in the UFC, as he broke the arm of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 140. The win brought Mir’s win streak to three, as his streak has also included the likes of Roy Nelson, and Mirko Cro Cop. Mir hasn’t held the UFC heavyweight title, since he lost his interim belt to Brock Lesnar, but if he can get by Velazquez, he’ll only be one step away from reclaiming UFC gold.
UFC 146 takes place May 26th from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and is headline by a UFC heavyweight title fight featuring Junior Dos Santos and Alistair Overeem.

EPIC
It will be!
I don’t know about epic but I bet it will be short.
So if Cain wins and dos santos wins=rematch, Cruz vs faber=rematch, silva vs sonnen=rematch, and everyone’s concencious favorite lol Edgar vs Bendo=rematch….so what’s the problem?
i don’t think Cain deserved a title fight if he wins. who else loses their title by getting KTFO and gets another shot with one win. i think mir has his number anyway though
pshh ok did we forget what cain is camplable of the caine we saw on the fox preview was not the same being he was out of shape and just got out of a major surgery yes i agree with you he should fight a couple more times but frank mirr has looked more and more sluggish cain will hand some ass and tko victory dont forget that franks jaw is made of glass
glass jaw? have you ever seen how many shots it took carwin and lesnar both to put him out? I’d say he’s got a decent chin.
at least mir is putting wins together. im sick of all these excuses about surgery, if you lose you lose its as simple as that.Rampage talks that shit all the time
I agree if you signed the paper and chose to fight then your tactical error cost you the fight. No excuses
He got knocked down with a behind the ear shit; anyone can go down from that especially from an overhand right from JDS. Cain if he runs through Mir, maybe knocks him out or puts on a stand-up clinic, then he does deserve it. IMO Nog is still better than Mir, Nog just got caught
*Shot lol
kind of hard to say Nog is better then Mir considering Mir beat him twice now. anything you can say about getting caught or having a staph infection is an excuse.
Big Nog was on his way to a TKO victory over Mir. Herb Dean was going to disqualify him though. He said theat Big Nog was hitting Mir in the back of the head.
UFC 146 is a MONSTER card now!
Dos Santos vs The Reem
Velasquez vs Mir
Big Country vs Bigfoot Silva
Barbosa vs Dunham
Hardy vs Ludwig
Mayhem vs Dollaway
UFC Debut of Glover Teixeira vs Kyle Kingsbury
Gabe Gonzaga vs Shane Del Rosario
Holy Cow!
Kicks the shit out of 145s card.
Can’t effin’ wait!
Idk who will win this one. I thought Frank was done against Big Nog but he came back as a zombie and snapped off his arm. Cain might be a little rusty too.
I got Cain by TKO.
That’s very likely! LOL Cain’s arm might be next though…..
Yea, Mir is a beast on the ground!
Cain by TKO for sure. He is quicker and has better hands than Big Nog, and won’t let him off the hook like Nog did.
Mir has been so close to the title for years now……
After all he’s been thru, be nice for him to at least get a shot at the title.
Crazy thing, if BigNog had put Mir away….it would be Nog in there against Cain for #1
What are you talking about? He beat Big Nog to take the Interim title, was then TKO’d by Brock Lesnar. Got another shot at the Interim title against Carwin, but was again TKO’d. And he got lucky that Nog didn’t just continue with Ground and Pound or he would have been TKO’d in that fight too.
He’s had plenty of opportunities, its just that he’s lost to the very top tier of fighters. Just as I expect him to lose to Velasquez.
I was disappointed when Roy lost to Mir. That was the worst fight I have ever seen… Maybe worse than Diaz vs Condit or Meathead vs Kongo.
i dont care if you didnt like condits gameplan but if you consider condit vs diaz and mir vs nelson the worst fights youve ever seen i think you need to start watching golf
+1
-100,000,000
If you didn’t care then why did you respond? I just think you’re easily entertained.
Definitely be there. Glad its at the mgm this time.
Cain better be on his game – Frank is a beast. And for ****’s sake tap if he gets your ass locked up in a Kimura!
cant wait
I hope Frank shows is full game…he’s actually quite capable of a lot.
We have seen him beat up a pretty damn good striker: Cheick Kongo( who also happen to display superior striking to Cain). And with what tool did Frank knock Cheick down with? An Overhand….And What tool did JDS KTFO Cain with? An Overhand.. I’m just saying I don’t see the stand up game as an option for Cain…
Cain is will put mir on his ass then ground and pound him.
you can always tell how long someone has been a fan of mma by their opinion of fedor, haters are usually tuf babies
so tru @lookatthesescrubs
Talent in the UFC must be drying up.. All these quick rematches or immediate rematches.. Give other guys a shot. People are making their way up the ladder just to be overlooked by guys coming off losses.. I know the guys that got beat did a good job in their title fight but they lost, Cain in rd 1. The only 1 that really makes sense to me at the moment is Cruz/Faber.
good luck getting Cain down Mir…if this happens then its Franks win.
That may be true. but remember Brock wasn’t scared to take Frank Down in the 2nd fight and well u remember what happened.
Cruz/faber doesn’t make sense faber won once and gets another title shot that’s the same shit as of Cain wins dominantly and getting a shot. Faber is going to be a top two guy just like florian cuz he’s ****ed at 145 and he’s to slow for Cruz at 135
^^^^ Brock is way bigger then Cain tho
He is bigger, but Cain kept Brock on the ground longer and showed who’s ground and pound was superior of the 2.
wow Cain gets a quick shot at no.1 contender. I would have loved to have seen some other HWs get a crack.
Something like Fabricio Werdum v Frank Mir would be entertaining as they seem to have similar fighting styles. I’d sooner see Cain prove himself against Mark Hunt or someone first..
Cain was on a tear before losing to JDS. Cain and JDS went sweep through the division. Who’s really going to take them out? Overeem yeah right he got his ass kicked at 205. Barnett Haha
I believe cains gameplan is going to be the same as when he fought nog keep the fight standing and strike where I think cain will tko mir.
both these dudes would lose to shane carwin, one already did.
Damn..a few of my favorites going for it! Well we all know that OVEREEM will be the next champ, so who do I want to be the no 1 contender..not sure. Well ..whoever wins Mir v Cain gets to face the REEMMONSTER! Oh boy..
I’ve been watching UFC from the start and have followed Mir’s career from the start too so i’m aware of what he’s capable of but, let’s be honest, he’s going to have a hard time stopping a TKO from Cain…
cain vs jds or the reem so ya probably jds vs cain will eventually happen
WAR MIR!!!
Mir only got the win over nog cos nog was hell bent on tapping him if nog had stayed on top and kept pounding him or let mir up he’d have ko’d him, obviously mir is sick on the ground but all fights start standing and mir gasses very quickly.
mir is going get killllllled…he got pure ass lucky from big nog now how the fuk is he going pulll this offf
YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!
I like cain in this one.. cain more of a well rounded fighter. and it will be a better match to see cain vs jds or overeem.. cain needs to come into the fight in shape. he didnt look like him self when he fought jds.. looked a little heavier then other times he fought.
Like Mir a lot but think Cain’s power and stand up will be too much for him. I didn’t like the way big Nog was tuning him up before they went to the ground. I can only imagine what Cain will do to him.
