This is how nearly the entire planet felt about a boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor, but it manifested itself nevertheless. It seems like Mayweather making his MMA debut could be following the same pattern. “[I haven’t applied for my MMA license] yet. Not yet, but everything takes time. Eventually we’re gonna apply for the license and hopefully we can fight [in the UFC]. We probably need a little bit longer [than three months to get ready for my first MMA fight]. A little bit longer. Even if it takes six to eight months, whatever it takes, we want to make sure everything is done correctly and everything is done the right way.” — Floyd Mayweather speaking to TMZ Sports.

Last week, we learned that UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley had offered to help undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. prepare for his much-discussed move to MMA. Speaking to TMZ this week, Mayweather confirmed that he plans to take Woodley up on this offer. “I’m going to start soon,” Mayweather said (h/t MMAJunkie). “We’ve been texting back and forth. We talked a couple times, but we’re going to start working out real soon.”

What are the odds? Turns out pretty good. Floyd Mayweather has been teasing a transition into MMA like a politician, flipping and flopping on whether it will really happy or not. Dana White revealed the talks were true, until Mayweather called him a liar and then proceeded to continue to post social media winks on his account. However, this recent news is the biggest confirmation yet. UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley had linked up with Moeny Mayweather to help prepare him for his UFC debut. “Floyd Mayweather is interested in taking a mixed martial art bout, maybe a few of them, so who better than The Chose One to teach him the ropes on how we get off the ropes and get in the cage. I saw him at the Jordan party during the All-Star weekend, we started chatting about training MMA and we decided let’s connect, let’s hook up in Vegas and do some training. Get him ready for MMA. Y’all think it’s a joke but think about this: Floyd Mayweather’s one of the best strikers of all times. How many guys in the UFC that can’t wrestle, and can’t grapple and they consider themselves a stand-up fighter? If they have to stand across from one of the greatest strikers ever, they’re gonna be in a world of smoke.”

While it’s good for his bank account, some fans despise the idea of another Conor McGregor fight simply for the spectacle of it all. Maybe if he didn’t still hold the UFC lightweight title, they’d be more lenient. Some just want to see him back in the UFC, whether he defends his title or not. No question the organization needs a little McGregor boost, which is why these superfights are being put together. However, coach John Kavanagh may have found a solution. What if McGregor actually fights Floyd Mayweather in MMA, but has a ‘real fight’ later that same night? “I’m kind of reminded of early last year when I was asked about the boxing fight and I was doubtful as anybody, and I actually went as far as to stupidly tweet that I’ll do the Irish river dance naked if Floyd steps in the Octagon. Now, I’m going to be honest, I’m practicing Irish dancing, and I’m getting nervous about that. In all seriousness, it’s a crazy world we live in. The fight that could never happen happened. And now this is a fight [in MMA] that can never happen, and it seems to be getting, I don’t know, there seems to be something forming there. I would absolutely love it.”

Yes, you read that headline correctly. And yes, it is a ridiculous headline. But the fact is that we suddenly live in a world where undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather and former professional wrestling star CM Punk might just clamber into the cage together for a weird throwback to the halcyon days of legal groin strikes and one-gloved fighters. Sure, this fight is incredibly unlikely to occur. If it does occur, however, expect CM Punk to walk into the cage as the betting favorite. Yes, despite a 0-1 MMA record, and the fact he’s only been training for a few years, the oddsmakers at sportsbook BetDSI.com believe he would beat the greatest boxer of our generation in a mixed martial arts bout.

While we all know it’s pretty unlikely that this will actually ever happen, we’ve somehow been ensnared by the madness all the same. If Mayweather did move to MMA, of course, it’s hard to imagine he’d fight anybody but UFC superstar Conor McGregor, who he defeated in a blockbuster boxing match back in August. From transitioning into a MMA by fighting, to being brought on to help with ZRUFFA Boxing, there has been ton of rumors flying around about Floyd Mayweather joining forces with the UFC. These rumors didn’t get born on some forums or on Twitter, this info came straight from Dana White’s mouth. It’s info that Mayweather wants stopped. He’s come out against it once, now he’s flat-out accusing White of just bringing up his name to leverage a better TV deal now that their time at FOX is ending. “Their deal with Fox is coming to an end. So, they’re trying to renew a new deal with any company what better name could they use than Floyd Mayweather? Because that’s a great name to use. I would use a Floyd Mayweather so I could leverage also and say, ‘You know what? Floyd’s gonna come back, he’s going to fight in the UFC. Floyd’s gonna come back and he’s gonna fight McGregor in the Octagon.’ So they can leverage and get another big deal. I don’t have anything against Dana White. At all. He’s a remarkable guy, a very, very smart guy. Smart business man. I don’t need to fight again. If I chose to fight in the Octagon, I’m choosing to fight in the Octagon because that’s what I want to do.”
