Boxing Beat: Floyd Mayweather Announces May 3rd Opponent
Boxing fans have long been wondering who Floyd “Money” Mayweather would be fighting, and now they have an answer. Mayweather announced on Twitter that he would be fighting Marcos Maidana, the WBA Welterweight champion. While many believed that Amir Khan would recieve the next shot, Floyd ultimately chose Maidana. According to Yahoo Sports, Mayweather justified his choice in opponent, stating: “Marcos Maidana’s last performance immediately brought him to my attention,” Mayweather said in a statement. “He is an extremely skilled fighter who brings knockout danger to the ring. I think this is a great fight for me and he deserves the opportunity to see if he can do what 45 others have tried to do before him: Beat me.”
Mayweather, considered by many to be one of the greatest boxers in history, looks to continue his perfect 45-0 record. He last fought in September of 2013, where he defeated Saul “Canelo” Alverez via unanimous decision. Maidana looks to make history with a win over Mayweather. At 35-3, he most recently fought in December, where he scored an upset over the heavily favored Adrien Broner.
