Boxer Adrien Broner on MMA: ‘I really don’t look at it as a real sport’

WBA Welterweight Champion Adrien Broner was asked about mixed martial arts during a recent interview with FightHype.com, and the undefeated boxer didn’t exactly have nice things to say about the popular combat sport:

“I’m really not too big on MMA,” said Broner. “I really don’t look at it as a real sport because anybody can come into MMA and learn that. You can learn that. Listen, you can’t just come in to boxing and be a world champion. You’ve got to be born with it.”

“Like you,” he said to the interviewer. “Right now, you can go into MMA, learn all the submission moves and be a world champion. It doesn’t matter how long it takes. I don’t give a f— what you do, you can try to come over to boxing, and you won’t ever be a world champion. I’m not disrespecting you, but I’m just saying, that’s how it works.”

What do you think of Broner’s negative comments Penn Nation?

  1. UFC 84 Forever says:

Because James Toney totally was able to just learn MMA. He did excellent in his fight against Couture.

  2. KIDD433 says:

Anybody can do MMA huh? Ok, let’s just see. Bring this fool to the UFC and feed him to a striker, like Aldo, or Showtime, and lets see how talented this guy really is.

  3. punisher says:

What an idiot, this coming from someone who really lost to PacMan. I picked up boxing in a year try doing that with wrestling or bjj numb nuts

    • Ry says:

you’re confusing him with Timothy Bradley, as has the dipshit that wrote this article. He’s put a pic of Bradley V Pacman lol.

    • Pete says:

Adrien Broner hasn’t lost to Pacman, he’s never fought him either. The man in the picture you apparently mistake for Broner is Timothy Bradley.

  4. squid says:

wow. MMA is a more complete form of combat. it incorporates everything: punches, kicks, elbows, knees, grappling, etc… while boxing is (yes, it is the sweet science) just one aspect of fighting – punching. imo, between two fighters in the same weight class, 9/10 times the top level MMA fighter would beat the top level boxer.

  5. squid says:

going off on a tangent here, to me …

MMA is to boxing as PS4 is to Super Nintendo.

new breed vs old school classic.

    HD vs 2D.

both excellent in their own right. yes, i love boxing (many classic fights, the history, the greats, etc.) but when it comes to progression, evolution and what’s in … well …

  6. 123 says:

Im alot more excited about Mayweather vs Alvarez than Jones vs Gustaffson.. but i like MMA abit more overall.

  7. K2 says:

Boxing sucks, matches are rigged and champs pad their stats with nobodies.

  8. MacGyver says:

He’s just saying that because he knows boxing is going down to MMA and he’s trying to keep his job alive. Deep down inside he doesn’t really believe that. The truth is that a smaller MMA fighter can defeat a larger more powerful boxer any day of the week.

  9. Michael says:

This guy is obviously threatened by the straight up facts. BOXING IS ON ITS LAST LEG. MMA is here to stay. Get with the it Adrian or be left in the dust you mofo dinosaur

  10. Big Big says:

Whatever, probably trying to trash talk his way into a payday a la Toney… Anyway ain’t a single person that believes Broner would last a full round against anyone in the UFC so let the idiot say whatever he wants til he mans up enough to back up his words

  11. Likeyou says:

Guessing not facing the best people in boxing makes you a champion, Guessing getting matched up to win is being a champion.

Boxing is like fake-wrestling, you know who’s gonna win because its predetermined by the matchmakers.

His arguements are invalid, you could just as easily learn all the boxing moves as you can learn all the submissions..

Both sports are something you haft to be born into, tho some boxers think they are champions after they beat some guys that they were suppose to beat up

  12. BadTongo says:

Were you guys not able to get a picture of Adrien Broner? Why is there just a picture of Manny? That makes no sense.

  13. doc says:

Boxing is a great foundation in fighting. But fighting is not only boxing. Wrestling is a great foundation in fighting. But fighting is not only wrestling. We can do this all day…

An athlete is an athlete no matter what sport. A sport is a sport regardless of what it encompasses. If people do it to compete than it can be a sport.

People need to get their heads on straight before making ignorant comments. Oh wait, boxers heads are never straight. They are too busy getting punched in the head all damn day.

When will these people realize that the upper echelon of MMA fighters train just as hard as other sport athletes?

  14. FRANKIE says:

well what would u call it then FOOL PLAY FIGHTING? WHATTA MORON. HED GET HIS ASS STR8 MOLLY WHOPPED AROUND THE OCTAGON BY ALL THE FIGHTERS, EVEN BY CLAY GUIDA. BOXING SUKKS ASS

  15. Plowboy says:

Broner is absolutely correct. I got my black belt in BJJ in three weeks of training, and I’m fighting the winner of Weidman/Silva for the world title, which will put my total training time right at a year.
Obviously, my statement is ridiculous, as was his.

  16. Trenton Tramatize Wilkins says:

i boxed since i was 13 and been doing mma for the last 6 years im pro fighter now… and if that guy really said mma is not a sport then he never been in one and in boxing is so corrupt u cant believe the title holders any way

  17. The Way Of The Dutchman says:

Can’t take this fool serious. He got braindamage. Sure anyone can learn MMA like anyone can learn boxing, but in both sports there’s only a few destined to be great at it. As a matter of fact in any sport there’s only a few….
