“Bones” and “The Spider” Nominated for 2013 ESPY Awards
| It’s a repeat from last year as once again UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and middleweight champion Anderson Silva were nominated for the “Best Fighter” award for the upcoming 2013 ESPN Espy Awards. The two are joined in the category by boxing nominees Canelo Alvarez, Danny Garcia and, of course, Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr.
Fans can vote on the “Best Fighter” of the year and 34 other categories at the 2013 ESPY Awards’ official website.
It’s the third time both Jones ad Silva have been nominated for “Best Fighter” category, although neither man has come home with the award yet.
The “Best Fighter” award was created in 2007 to replace the “Best Boxer” category that had been in place since 1993. Since then the “Best Fighter” award has been claimed four times by Mayweather Jr. and twice by Manny Pacquaio. It’s only a matter of time before the fans choose an MMA star to take home the award, but the competition is stiff again this year.
Past MMA nominees for “Best Fighter” include Georges St-Pierre, Lyoto Machida, Quinton Jackson, Randy Couture and Edson Barboza. None of these men have actually won the award, either. Could this be the year that MMA reigns supreme?
The ESPY Awards, which take place on July 17 at Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, will honor and award the best achievements, moments and athletes of the past season/year. Fan voting for the 35 award categories, including “Best Fighter” is open now at the ESPY Awards’ official website.
The show airs live on ESPN and will be hosted by award-winning actor Jon Hamm.
