This past week was awesome on every level. I feel awesome physically and mentally. My kids started school and I drive them every day at 8am and pick them up at 3. My training last week went really well, I am feeling good, strong and extremely confident as I head into my fight with Mighty Mo. K-1 was here in Phoenix all day this past Friday doing all the pre-fight promotional work. Saturday, I took the kids out to dinner at The Olive Garden and had a great time with them. As I said I value the time I spend with my family and like to take advantage of any opportunity I get with them.
Things are looking good for the future of K-1 with the recent announcement of a deal with Spike TV. The first year the events will be streamed on their website, Spike.Com. The following year is when the K-1 events will be shown on television. It was such great news for K-1, all the athletes and the sport as a whole. It’s important for the future to have a partner like Spike in our corner. Spike is a big reason why the UFC is where it is today and the partnership with K-1 has a lot of potential.
Some friends and I got together and watched UFC 151 on Saturday night. Ben Henderson & Frankie Edgar put on another close fight. In the end I think it was scored the right way, I thought Ben out-struck Frankie and had the clearer blows landed. You never know what the judges are thinking or how they are going to score it. It’s always better to finish the fight and not leave it in the hands of the judges. It’s difficult when you have others making a decision on something for you. As we have seen recently the judges can make some bad decisions. I teach at The MMA Lab where Ben trains and he is also a co-owner and he’s a terrific young man. He is truly a great kid and a great fighter.
I haven’t had too many media obligations as of yet. K-1 just gave me my agenda this past week and I know I’ll be heading to Los Angeles on Wednesday September 5th. The next day we will be taking part in a press conference and doing a lot of interviews as the fight gets closer. Friday we will have the weigh-ins and Saturday is fight day. Phoenix is a weird city; Ben doesn’t even get interviews here. The media focuses on the Diamondbacks push for the playoffs and the start of the Cardinals football season. It’s really hard to get into a newspaper here so all the media obligations come from outside the city.
It was awesome to hear about Jon Jones signing a deal with Nike. It opens the door for combat sports and while I won’t be around to reap any of the benefits I am excited about the prospects of the deal. If K-1 takes off like the UFC did, especially now with the deal with Spike, then the sky is the limit for the sport of kickboxing. There could be someone from K-1 down the road that is kickboxing’s version of Jon Jones and that would be great for all the fighters.
Now that we have just three weeks left until fight day I feel like I’m in a real good place. We have two weeks of real hard training left and then the third week is when we leave for LA. We plan on training hard until Tuesday September 4th then the next day will be a travel day. Once I am in LA we will do some light training, nothing too intense just too keep me warm. I won’t go all out, but I still have to do something to keep busy, but at the same time I need to make sure I don’t over train.
I have so many supportive people behind me who are helping me prepare for this fight. I have to thank my trainer Shihan Nico, Dr. Scott Wilson, World Dent and Wayne Viers. Last, but certainly not least, I want to thank my family.Tags: benson henderson, featured, Frankie Edgar, jon jones, K-1, K-1 Uprising, Mighty Mo Siliga, Nike, Rick Roufus, Spike, ufc, UFC 150
