BJ Penn Set To Compete Against Pro Surfer Sunny Garcia In Triathlon For Charity | UFC NEWS

Hilo, Hawaii (March 5th, 2013) – Former UFC Champion BJ Penn will be competing in a triathlon later this month in an effort to raise money for charity.

The two-time UFC Champion will take part in the 2013 Lavaman Waikoloa Hawaii Challenge on March 24th. The triathlon consists of a 1.5 K swim followed by a 40 K bike trek and will be concluded by a 10 K run. Penn will be joined in competition by professional surfer and fellow Hawaiian, Sunny Garcia. The two will both compete in the event with all proceeds being handed off to charity. However, the winner will take home the “All Hawaii Perpetual Trophy” and will be invited back next year to defend their title. BJ, who is always looking to add another title to his resume, will be gunning for the victory.

Penn has been an avid contributor to charity groups and needy foundations throughout his entire career. His passion to help others and impact lives for the better is almost unmatched by any other professional athlete. He has always had a soft spot for his native homeland of Hawaii and his love for helping his fellow Hawaiian brothers and sisters has really only just begun to shine.

Better go to the 209 to ask for some help with training. Good luck!

  2. John M says:

As a long time competitive triathlete this is great to hear, especially with the fact that he is my favorite fighter!

  3. real homies says:

this will be a disaster, how do you compete in triathlon if you gas after 5 minutes?

  4. corey ransom says:

Boy is that the truth let it go bro

  5. doc says:

I don’t know how he is going to complete this being that he cannot last more than one round nowadays. But way to go to do it for CHARITY! He and everybody else knows his cardio is shit, but he is gonna do it anyway.

Good luck. Try to finish even if you cannot win!

  6. 757 says:

He’s doing it for charity and goodwill. Thank you BJ for the effort for other people.

  7. Mike says:

Corey, doc and “real homies” (lmao). You’ve obliviously never competed in MMA and you lack of knowledge is amusing. There is far more involved in fighting that play major factors in cardio…. Why are you on here bashing someone who is participating in a charitable event? If you you don’t like BJ then why are you on his website? He has given some of the most entertaining fights in the UFC. He keeps coming back and fighting bc the fans want him too. That’s a real fighter for the fans, a wealthy man with a family fights bc we beg him too. No one is perfect, but he always fights his fight. Save your douche bag criticism for an actual fight not a person contributing to charity.

    • real homies says:

bro you got it all wrong, we didn’t say anything bad about his fighting. But for real, how is he even going to compete in a triathlon?! Why didn’t he do something he is actually good at like (charity boxing match, charity jiu jitsu match). A triathlon requires you to have excellent cardio, just ask the Diaz brothers. It’s not for everyone, hope that makes sense. I am a huge BJ fan, I love the way he fights and he is one of my favorite fighters, but this triathlon will not go well.

  8. Kenny powers says:

What’s next, Stephen hawkings tap dance for peace?

  9. 757 says:

Charity to help people. Good move BJ thank you.
