BJ Penn: "I dont believe my hype anymore"

I got here to Las Vegas and am ready for my UFC 137 main event fight with Nick Diaz.

He’s a great fighter who I respect and I like. Nick and his brother Nate actually came out to help me train for my UFC 101 match against Kenny Florian. We’re not close friends, but both of the Diaz brothers have really helped me out in the past and we have hung out. This isn’t a fight either of us would have asked for, but we are both at the top of the division and there’s no one else for us to fight.

Nick’s very dangerous with his punches; we’d have a great boxing match, and he’s got some of the purest jiu-jitsu in MMA.

That’s one of the reasons I’ve stayed away from the hype for this fight, but not the only reason. I’ve not even read part 1 of this Yahoo! blog, I sent it over via email and I haven’t seen it published on the site and I won’t read this one either once I am done doing it.

I was told today that Yahoo! called the blog “The Penn is Mightier,” which is pretty funny and a good title. But I won’t read anything, no interviews or previews. I won’t watch the Countdown TV preview show, nothing, because I want to stay away from the hype for the rest of my career.

There’s nothing wrong with talking smack and backing it up. Muhammad Ali did it and I did it in my career, but honestly I feel like I am too old now for that. As you get older, have a family of your own, talking about opponents stops being something you want to do or be part of.

I am still very passionate about MMA and my career. I love fighting but I want to save that passion for the fights and the training.

And I am tired of talking and not getting the result I wanted. I want my energy to be on training and winning, not on getting too emotional before the fight. I don’t want to be watching UFC Primetime two days before the fight going ‘Oh, why did you say that, you idiot?’

You can never choose how someone takes a quote of something you say and uses it. Once you say it you have to accept that it is out there. I said something one time about is it too much to ask to be the best fighter in the world, and that is out there forever.

Legacies and who’s the best pound-for-pound, I don’t know about that. There really isn’t one best fighter, even in one division you can have an argument.

I know a lot of people say Georges St-Pierre is the best welterweight ever, but in a lot of ways Matt Hughes is the best welterweight ever in my mind. Look at his record as UFC welterweight champion: He had eight stoppages. He was fighting the top guys and stopping them inside the distance. I can tell you about it myself. I don’t want to start anything with Georges, but I think finishing fights counts for something.

I’m happy with what I accomplished. How my career has gone is a little different to how I imagined it going, that’s for sure. I’m two-division champion and I have stayed around for a long time, so it is different to what Matt and Georges did by dominating one division over a long period of time.

Honestly, I feel there’s more to come from me. I want more big wins and hopefully a title shot and to win another title. But I’m also older and realize sometimes getting that title is timing. If I win fights and the champion is due to fight and I am healthy, I can get a title shot. But the timing has to be there for me, the champion and the UFC, and I can only control some of that.

If I end up losing to Nick Diaz, and losing other fights, I will be happy with my MMA career. But I feel I have a fresh start now, a new mentality and that I am adding things to my game which I didn’t have before. I’m looking forward to this fight, and the next, and the next and the one after that.

win or lose in this fight, you’ll always be a legend

    • MMA-ster says:

Penn will win dude. Strikeforce caliber fighters create padded records for fighters like Diaz. Not that he isn’t a wicked fighter, but his UFC record sucks, and he hasn’t faced top UFC guys in along time; now he’s facing one of the best ever…!? He’s gonna get his ass kicked.

  2. TheBraveReply says:

    Get em’ BJ!!!

  3. andyboy says:

Cheeee GREAT attitude! i think its our island mentality, losses happen but they dont define you as a fighter. I just lost my last fight up in Cali in under a minute but the guy never touch me ONE time, i bus ‘em up a lil on the feet so he took me straight down and worked on one choke for 30 seconds. my bad for letting him get it, but i’d fight him again in a heart beat and anyone else in the world at LW or WW. We jus like scrap regardless how it ends, of course winning and havin your hand raised is a great great feeling, like surfing a 6-8ft wave in Pupukea, but losses don’t mean anything unless it’s a decision loss, those are worse than a loss. going to a decision is worse than gettig KO’d or Sub’d, getting KO’d or sub’d means you took risks and fighting is all about risks, hence ANYTHING can happen, i threw a head kick at a division II wrestler knowing if i miss i’m open to a TD, i missed he took me down, i got choked out…..i took a risk!!!

Condit has a very good chance at beating GSP. given GSP’s history, of course you can make an argument that he’ll take Condit down and control him for 5 rounds, BUT condit seems like the kind of guy to take a huge risk and throw a flying knee or head kick as GSP, MOST and NONE have cuz they’re afraid to get taken down. i think Condit knows he’s gonna be on his back in that fight, so he’s not gonna try to jab with GSP, like a BJJ black Belt Shields, he’s gonna throw superman punches, flying knees, head kicks, leg kicks, he’s gonna try to hurt GSP with whatever he can, which is why he deserves a title shot, not becuz he worked his way up the ladder but he’s talented and ballsy enuff to take the fight to GSP.

Lets get behind BJ and Nick and wish them a safe but fun fight. JUST SCRAP!

  4. ThaGreenBandit says:

Loved the young, brash Prodigy, but the older, humble BJ Penn is even more likeable. This is gonna be an awesome fight, and I hate to see one of these two warriors have to catch an “L”

    • BiggoTrav says:

I think the fact that MMA fans have had the chane to watch his evolution in and out of the cage is what makes him one of the beloved fighters there will ever be!

    • JAG says:

Not just likeable brah…Very admirable, mature, a father, a provider, and not to mention twice the fighter he was! He’s still just as talented but TRUST ME, HIS BRAIN & DOME is in a VERY PEACEFUL & CONFIDENT PLACE, BUT HIS MENTAL APPROACH/FRAME OF MIND IS BAR NONE & WILL AFFECT EVERY FIGHT FROM THIS CAMP FORWARD! HIS BEST PARTS & LEGACY OF HIS CAREER ARE FOREVER FOR HIS BETTER, NEXT CHAPTER OF HIS LIFE/CAREER IS STARTING TONIGHT WHEN HE RAISES HIS HAND!! JUST KEEP THE MANA UP& KEEP THE POSITIVE VIBES- TRUST ME, WE FEEL IT IN CAMP WHEN ALL THE FANS ARE GIVING POSITIVE VIBES!!! MAHALO NUI LOA TO YOU ALL FROM THIS CAMP!!! WE’VE BEEN TRAINING SUPER HARD AND TONIGHT WE GOING PARTAY AND CELEBRATE AFTER BJ RAISES HIS HAND!! PENN NATION, WE GOING TO WAR IN HOURS!!!! JUST SCRAP AND KOKUA!!!!

  5. e says:

win lose or draw BJ you got people that got your back no matter what! and you’re right, no need bother with the hype, you just do your thing boss! your time is tomorrow!!! cant wait!

  6. Fortyb4five says:

wow great blog bj, I always love reading about whats on your mind.

  7. McLuvin says:

BJ was THE best for me, but this new “mature” BJ is just crap. He doesnt want to know anything before the fight because he knows he will lose. That has allways been Pen flaw, his mental strenght… and his cardio… its a shame

    • DaRuckuz says:

      shame for you

      • Fortyb4five says:

yeah really lol I don’t know why these people are cryin on here about BJ…lol if you don’t like him why you on the site fool? I have never once doubted bj or his legacy..thats how you know who are the true fans and who are the bandwagon fans.

    • JAT says:

all hes saying is that he doesnt want to talk a bunch of crap and look back on the video or the blogs and psyche himself out by thinking “damn whyd i say that?” and wasting time and energy thinking about what he said. he doesnt want to say something in an interview with a big head then think he has to back it up in the cage. hes not saying hes not going to be crazy come fight time but he wants to save his energy for when that time comes. i also think training with matt has helped his mental game a lot.

    • TheBraveReply says:

go back to GSP.com Oh wait theres no such thing. HAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!

    • fricken Kobasky says:

kiss my ass Kobasky, I know this is you, you turd!

  8. Harry says:

This is why I am a fan of BJ. Guy is a true champ.

  9. BJ PENCIL says:

good luck, i know you’ll win!!!

  10. Night-Wind says:

    Finland got your back mate!

  11. JAT says:

in all honesty this fight depends on what BJ shows up to the fight. if its the BJ that comes to the cage crying, slapping his face, ripping his eye balls out, and pretty much tearing his flesh off then its deffinately a big W for him but if he shows up lookin like he did for the second frankie edgar fight then i would say hes going to lose.

  12. Mike says:

I actually agree about the mindset, but can BJ win? Absolutely. As long as he shows up and not that dude who looked like he was about to fall asleep in Edgar/Penn II

  13. desmond says:

i like the sound of bj’s new attitude! looking forward to seeing a great preformance from him this saturday night!

  14. Xaninho says:

BJ is just saying he rather concentrates on the upcoming fight instead of wasting time talking smack about his opponent. All the hyping is just a distraction from what’s really important…The fight!

  15. andyboy says:

Why are you so judgemental on BJ’s mindset…..is Nick talking trash psychin himself out????? the door swings both ways as i’m sure you do. Nick isn’t the same crazy disrespectful trash talker leading up to this fight either! It’s called RESPECT! how do you think Chael Sonnen would act if him and Hendo were to fight…..it would be crazy how UNCONFIDENT he would seem leading up to that fight, it has nothing to do with his mindset being in the wrong place, he likes Diaz, Diaz likes him, they dont want to fight each other, they both are gonna get a nice paycheck now that it’s a main event so they have to do what they have to do. Did you even read my post? jus cuz he says winning isn’t everything doesn’t mean he’s accepting defeat, you must literally not have a single fighters bone in your body, you are a true FAN but nothing more. join an amatuer circuit where you live or a BJJ club, something, just compete, win and lose, look back and realize that losing doesn’t mean you’re not still getting in that cage/ring/mat and going toe to toe with someone else who has the ability to hurt you, win or lose it’s a fight, sometimes fighters lose, sometimes they win, just because he’s old enuff to understand the true validity of this now doesn’t mean he’s not fired up to fight anymore or his will to win is gone. HE DOESNT WANT TO FIGHT DIAZ, he’s still gonna go in there and rip Diaz’s head off, and vice versa. They’ll prolly become even better friends after this.

and there’s no BJ of the Edgar II fight!!!!! he went into that fighting thinking since he did so well and should have won the first fight while he was sick, he can beat him 100% healthy, went in there and was caught off guard LIKE Fitch was caught off guard that BJ took him down, at how much more prepared Edgar was for this fight. BJ then is the same BJ now, he was outclassed by someone who wanted it more and caught him off guard by that. BJ IMO would still not win a 3rd fight with Edgar, not at this point, Edgar is lucky Maynard has never finished anyone or knows how to haha, and BJ can finish him, BUT Maynard got lucky with that uppercut and BJ fought him twice and never hurt him, so i would pull for BJ and put money on BJ, faith, but i wouldn’t be surprised if he lost a decision to Edgar a third time. So BJ Penn of 3 years ago is still the same BJ Penn of today, just a more mature mindset about fighting. you fight someone you’ve trained with and someone you know and like and let me know how pumped up you are to punch him in the face and kick his ass…………

    • henry Kobasky says:

We don’t have all day. Keep it short and simple, retard.

      • Bigson47 says:

BJ has been done in his mind for a while. He’s a family man now. I see him running his gym and hanging up the gloves. He should have done it after Edgar IMO. He has a highlight film career and will be considered a legend of the sport. Dana will of course nominate him for the hall of fame as well.

  16. Xaninho says:

“Honestly, I feel there’s more to come from me. I want more big wins and hopefully a title shot and to win another title.”

That was just one quote from the same article of which you based your ridiculous opinion on that BJ is going in with a losers mentality.

Now shut it and let the sensible people talk about MMA.

    • Xaninho says:

Haha you’re funny. You ask for ANY evidence to counter your statements….I give you a simple quote from the above article.

Your reaction to that is:”..another weak counterpoint. As usual. Read the accompanying article to this one.”

So a straight up quote is a weak counterpoint in your eyes. But at the same time you are saying you made a good point because “All the evidence I’ve given to support my assertions are straight from BJ’s mouth.”

I don’t know what your problem is, but I’m pretty sure it’s not having too much brain tissue…

      • henry Kobasky says:

I am gay and all those that respond to my posts are gay. Meet me in NY for a free massage and drinks. I am a gay Physical Therapist. Yipeeeee!

  17. David says:

    I wanna suck bjs ****

  18. jboy says:

Good he matured..I think after the gsp fight he learned…cause I remember he talked a lot of smack

  19. Amen bradduh Bj.. another great article!

  20. Lex w says:

100% agree wit bj matt hughes is tha best ww ever

  21. Kalani says:

Hawaii isn’t known for 7 day vacations on timeshares anymore. Hawaii is now known for born fighters. B.J is the reason for that. It’s in our blood. it’s part of our culture. We Are Warriors. I’m so proud to have Hawaiian Roots. MMA was never big on the mainland. Bootleg dvds from pride was all I got. I think it is absolutely beautiful that the sport has grown. I have mad respect for Brazil, Thailand and Japan and all their true fighters. They paved the way as well. It’s all about Culture.
I just hope that those people who take 2 lessons in bjj understand the respect and the honor of the sport. i’ve seen guys take those instructions they learned that day to the bar. Then after having a few shots of tequila along with their bud/coors lights they try to pick a fight w someone. no respect.

  22. KingGareth says:

It’s only 3 rounds. It will be winner by decision and no one will agree with the outcome.

  23. Fortyb4five says:

LOL ” Just another failed attempt at a put down” nice fail

  24. Fortyb4five says:

And again its not one word.

    • JAG says:

LISTEN TO YOU WITH ALL YOUR BIG WORDS-DEGREE OR NOT….YOU DON’T KNOW SHIT! TRUST ME, I’M IN THIS CAMP AND YOU SAID SOME VALID POINTS BUT SOME THAT ARE STRAIGHT UP NONSENSE!! “BJ THINKS HE’S GONNA LOSE?!!” OMG GUY!! ARE YOU DILLUSIONAL?? WE HAVE BEEN SO SECRETIVE ABOUT A LOT THINGS THIS CAMP AND GOING DOWN A DIFFERENT TRAINING REGIMAN AND MENTAL APPROACH!

YOU ACT LIKE YOU HERE IN CAMP GUY AND KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HE’S FEELING! YOU AT EVERY TRAINING SESSION? NOPE! YOU TALK AND SEE BJ EVERYDAY? NOPE! I DO!!!! SO SHUT UP!!! JUST KEEP POSITIVE VIBES SLAPNUTS!!

    • Fortyb4five says:

LOL you make me laugh. You get on here trying to act all smart and bragging about having a degree when it probably isn’t true because normal people dont get on a internet forum to brag about themselves haha your so pathetic. Crawl back under your rock…oh and again its not one word.

  25. EP says:

you sound worse than these insignificant clowns on sherdog.com. you are just some loser who probably got into this sport after TUF / Griffen v Bonnar came out, if that. get the fk out of here you sound like the biggest idiot. oh and in response to your statement about the losing mindset… watch the countdown to ufc 1137 when Bj says at ufc 137 he will “defeat Nick Diaz” …. sounds like a real losers mindset. dude get lost already nobody gives a sh*t about you or your stupid comments on here. this page is about the legend BJ PENN and his fans and TRUE fans of the sport of mma, not douchebags like you.

  26. sammy P. says:

If Mr. Penn BJ retired from the UFC , at less be on top of the game, leave with a victory not with a lose. i have a lot of love for all fighter out there but BJ is one of my fighter that bi look up too.
