BJ Penn And Frankie Edgar Set to Coach The Ultimate Fighter Season 19

As confirmed by UFC Tonight, former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion, B.J. Penn will return to action to coach the 19th season of The Ultimate Fighter against Frankie Edgar. They will be coaching fighters in both the middleweight and light-heavyweight divisions.

UFC president, Dana White stated on UFC tonight that he had originally planned on pitting Urijah Faber against Edgar as coaches of TUF but the two could not agree on a weight class in which to compete. Around the same time as the UFC struggled with finding two suitable coaches, Penn requested, in a text to White, Penn expressed his desire for a top caliber lightweight opponent. White also stated that Penn is extremely motivated for this opportunity in a new division.

Here is White talking about Penn’s return in a recent press release:

“BJ Penn is moving down to 145 lbs. to coach The Ultimate Fighter against Frankie Edgar,” said UFC President Dana White. “BJ really hates the fact that he lost to Frankie Edgar. It’s something that’s been burning deep inside of him for three years now. So he’s moving down to 145 lbs. to not only avenge those defeats, but to try and become the first fighter in UFC history to win titles in three different weight classes.”

Penn has now agreed to drop to featherweight for the first time in his career and take on Edgar for a third meeting. This will be the first time they have faced each other without a UFC title being on the line.

As for the fight, an undetermined date and venue will house the third matchup once the season wraps up. The season debuts in April of 2014 on Fox Sports 1.

Penn will fight in the fifth weight class of his professional career, this being the lightest. Penn was unsuccessful in winning his last bout, a welterweight fight with Rory MacDonald last December that went to the judges scorecards.

Edgar has already made the drop to 145-pounds, losing his debut bout to featherweight champion, Jose Aldo. Edgar bounced back though, winning a memorable fight with Charles Oliveira at UFC 162. Edgar defeated Penn at UFC 112 in 2010 to take the UFC lightweight title from ‘The Prodigy’ and retained his belt in the rematch at UFC 118.

  1. Nate "THE ROID CHEAT" marquardt says:

Edgar is going to do the same thing as he did the last 2 fights with Penn and that is run away 99% of time and pitter patter and flash takedowns (one at end of every round that is) Penn is a “REAL” fighter and Edgar is a point fighter/pitter patter.

Edgar missed his calling as leprecon/jockey

    • squid says:

yes, ur right. frankie will do the same thing. that’s his style. he’s doesnt have power cause he rarely plants his feet. however he did KO maynard and frankie’s got heart man. u gotta respect that. that said, im still going for BJ. prodigy all the way!

      • zack says:

i hope frankie trys that pitter patter shit cuz bj is gunna walk through it and knock his ass out!

        • brandon says:

You’re an idiot and washed up bj is too for taking another match against edgar. I guess bj just wants to get beaten by frankie in two different weight classes. I bet this fight ends just like his the fight that gsp beat him so bad he had to throw in the towel. Bj is washed and had better stay retired if don’t want lose again.

  2. mean170 says:

I’m expecting BJ at 145 to look a lot like BJ at 155 when he was making the rest of the weight class look bad.

  3. UFC 84 Forever says:

LET’S GO BJ!! PENN WILL BE SMARTER AND IN THE BEST CONDITION OF HIS LIFE!! Fucking right I wanted to see him at 145 since before the Rory fight! Let’s do this shit Prodigy!!

  4. squid says:

OMG. i am seriously about to cry right now. i just got chicken skin from reading the title. the return of the prodigy!!!! and he’s gonna fight at 145 and a rematch with frankie! fuck yeah! gonna be a good fight! let’s go BJ!!!

BJ go back to the marinovich’s!!!!!!

  5. hanibal says:

We love u bj, but u struggled with conditioning even without the weight cut and lately u looked like u were barely able to finish one round, even a fat surfer had better conditioning than u for god’s sake!! and mma has the best conditioned athletes in the world like the one u r going to face, so I think this decision is unwise, lightweight is your best weight class at your age so try making the fight there..

I would also strongly suggest making the move to a proper training camp like alpha male -best choice imo- or aka, maybe even jose aldo’s camp.. u could benefit from the discipline, structure, strategy, gameplans and world class training partners there, who can push u hard and inspire u to train even harder.. and u’ll be focused solely on fighting unlike back home..

also to be honest it’s not only the conditioning, edgar’s style does present problems even if u were in great shape, so u have to add new tools and evolve with the sport to match these young tricky fighters..
I think-like I thought in the 2nd fight- that the best way is to take him down and submit him but u have to have a plan b as he’ll be very difficult to take down and will have solid defensive bjj so be prepared to wrestle offensively and defensively and grind for 10 rounds if necessary..
u have all the time in the world so u can do three or at least two training camps before the fight, throw in a test weight cut in there and slow down your training two weeks before the fight so that u wont be overtrained and recover for the fight.. use a nutritionist, maybe mike dolce, to help u cut the weight as best as possible without loosing too much muscle..

WAR BJ I really hope u return strong this time and reclaim your belts..

    • Roman says:

This. BJ is a legend but he was to lazy to make 155 and stay in shape. I don’t see him diciplined enough to make 145. Also his camp is full of a bunch of yes men. I can’t remember which fight it was but he was getting dominated and his corner was only telling him stuff like “You are great!” “Lookin good bud” and crap like that instead of being like you look like smashed a$$ do this instead. A real camp like Alpha Male or *gasp* Greg Jackson would do wonders for BJ.

      • K3vbot says:

alpha male wasn’t a real camp until the got Ludwig. Faber was the leader while still being a fighter, which can lead even great fighters to underachieve. He is bringing in Nova Uniao guys for the show, hopefully he works with them alot.

    • nik says:

a motivated penn is the most dangerous fighter in the world people tend to forget penn fought Machida to a close decision he can do w.e he wants and when he did train hard and was motivated he was in the best shape I believe he will do fine at 145 and hope the motivation hes bringing can bring a win aswell.

  6. hanibal says:

  7. 757 says:

Love them both as fighters. BJ is a true warrior but so is Frankie. All the haters saying he is a pitter patter fighter have it wrong. That dude goes in to do work every time. He spent much of his career fighting guys that were way bigger at the weight class and gave the fans some really good fights to watch. He has much heart also. Like em both, good fight. We will see how it comes out.

    • magoo says:

I’m with u man, both these fighters are studs! Looking forward to see BJ back in the cage, he will however have to be in the best shape of his life to beat Frankie.

  8. ravi says:

I like this guy above’s idea. Penn train with Alpha Male or Aldo/Anderson Silva’s camps!

  9. AWESOME says:

BJPenn is coming back to fight.. Can’t wait to see this.

  10. GRT 3000 says:

    fuckin’ sweet – he’s back.

  11. Drew says:

Bj im so pumped this really went well with my end of the day green , much love from philly u rememer how rowdy we got for u that night , WAR BJ PENN!!!

  12. doc says:

HOW THE FUC K IS BJ GOING TO MAKE 145?

That is the first thing. But the second thing is how the fuk is Bj going to stop Edgar from out pointing him AGAIN?

  13. Ricci says:

How can you possibly badmouth someone like Frankie Edgar?

This guy is a monster.. he has proven so much already and has all of my respect.. guy has mad heart

  14. ^ says:

Fuck the haters, if BJ wants to scrap let him scrap Team penn all day.

  15. Alan says:

My heart wants BJ to win, but my brain tells me that this is a horrible idea for 3 reasons:

    1) BJ already hated the cut to 155. There is no way he’s going to last at 145 long enough for a title run.
    2) Frankie Edgar will do exactly the same thing to him all over again. BJ is too slow now.
    3) Even if Frankie messes up and gets finished by BJ, I don’t see BJ beating anyone in the top 5 at featherweight.

I think he’s suffering from TOS (Tito Ortiz Syndrome) – retiring seemed like a great idea after a few losses, but it doesn’t take long for him to realize how much he misses the attention.

  16. Shani says:

Big fan of BJ, but i just don’t see BJ emerging as a winner! At 155 BJ had poor conditioning and Frankie was too much to handle on both accounts! AT 145 BJ would gas out in the 1st round with Frankie’s pace. Wish him all the best but I think I already know the result.

  17. joe mcelvenney says:

marinovich training with team alpha male, and we can all call it a day. Frankie won’t make it out of the 2nd round.

  18. reflux says:

Aldos camp, please you say condition is bjs problem aldo has the same problems he gasses after the second round.plus bj will get atitle fight or number one contender match if he beats Edgar so yea lets go training with the champ’s team lol.bj is small as fuck he should have been fighting @145 his whole career there will be no problem making weight Anyone who thinks so needs to open your eyes and quit counting the weight of penns huge balls.penn smashes Edgar then takes the belt from jose’s overrated ass

  19. park says:

why would they put Frankie on the shelf for almost a year. he’s one of the only 155 ers that’s a PPV draw

  20. Tom says:

BJs first two fights with Frankie were 5 rounds. Will this be a 3 round? Also, BJ’s body type is fine for 145… He will HAVE to make weight, which will force him to HAVE to work. It will be exciting to see how it goes. A 3 round fight at 145 might prove to be a blessing for BJ. I’m just thinking if he pursues 145, and wins the belt there? 3 weight classes? My god. We all know he has the talent…

  21. m says:

    fuck the haters.

i was there in seattle when bj walked out against rory mcdonald. he fought his heart out against a younger, faster, and bigger opponent.

if there was anyone that could motivate bj penn to come back to mma it’s frankie edgar. frankie is 2 up on BJ and i’m sure that eats away at penn.

regardless of his training and diet, i’m stoked to see bj fight again…

  22. The Way Of The Dutchman says:

A ripped BJ at 145 is what most of his fans wanted. I hope he can make the cut in a sensible way. Avenging his undeserved loss to Frankie ‘the Rematch’ Edgar would be sweet.

  23. ben says:

    helllllllllllllllllllll yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

    love you b.j.

Its about time you decide to drop weight and come back.

    we loveeeeeeee youuuuuuuuuuuuu

  24. saiasaka says:

    fuckin great news !

  25. T.Daddy says:

WAR BJ!!!! F.UCK ALL THE HATERS!! Edgar is getting choked out this time

  26. James Wolfe says:

Get it shape, like you were at 155 when you dominated…start now man…go BJ.

  27. Slim Charles says:

GO BJ!!! I LOVE YOU; I WISH YOU THE BEST!!! WILL DEFINITELY BE LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS SCRAP!!!

  28. pomai says:

Marinovich bros. + Mike “Dolce Diet”. + American Kickboxing Academy. = He could be a fukin beast!!!!!!!!
