Bendo/Gil; Mir/Cormier Official For UFC on FOX 7 | UFC News
After the final Strikeforce card, questions arose on who the last champions of Strikeforce would face in their Octagon debut. Lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez and Heavyweight Grand Prix champion Daniel Cormier, now have their first official fights in the UFC finalized.
For Melendez, an immediate title shot with Benson Henderson is slated for the main event of UFC on FOX 7 that is scheduled for April 20. Melendez was supposed to fight Pat Healy on the final Strikeforce card but was forced out due to injury in what would have been his last attempted title defense.
For Cormier, a rescheduled bout with Frank Mir is also scheduled in what will likely serve as the co-main event. Cormier’s last fight was this past Saturday when he dominated replacement fighter, Dion Staring in the co-main event of Strikeforce: Marquardt vs. Saffiedine
UFC confirmed the news earlier today via Tweet:
The HP Pavilion in San Jose, California will host the event which ironically, is the longtime home of the majority of Strikeforce cards.

mir cannot hang with cormier..cormier next ufc champion
Pettis was robbed by the Ufc. I think this is such bullshit. **** the fans and to hell with making bullshit fights they wanna see.
What happen to ranking and keeping the top level guys fighting for a #1 shot. Im not about this Strikeforce hype train.
Man its all bullshit the rankings are a joke now. Gil has not beat not beat any top guys its all hype DC too. Edgar, Diaz, Sonnen, & now Melendez do not DESURVE there title shots
Why are u so bent outta shape about pettis he lost to guida and gave a poor performance against Jeremy Stephens yes he beat lauzon but what part of his performance in UFC warrants a title fight the guy showed how bad he was in the Stephens fight even no he got w only wen u perform are u rewarded not cause what u did in past or in another org. You no how many fighters were champs in other org before they came to UFC prolly 95%
Bendo beats gilbert and Cormier ****ing DOMINATES frank mir.
Cormier is gonna BLAST Mir… and Bendo is gonna destroy Melendez… don’t get me wrong i like Gil.. and he’s tuff.. but Bendo is on a whole other level right now! I think fighting Edgar twice, changed Bendo. He’s just another fighter. He learned his weaknesses from the Edgar fights and he tightened up his game, that’s why Diaz stood no chance and that’s why i see Bendo holding on to that belt for a minute. The only one i can think of right now that could take that belt is Pettis… BUT then again we gotta see whats up with him after this long layoff…
Actually, the reason the Edgar fight was so much different was the style. Edgar is a difficult person to fight based on how he fights. Diaz’s style played better into Bendo’s style. I’d like to see Pettis and Bendo fight just because of the 1st fight. However, I see it going much different. THAT’S the fight that changed Bendo, not quite Frankie(even though I think Bendo is consistently evolving).
Looking forward to seeing Bendo work Gil FTW. I think some of you guys aren’t giving Mir enough credit, he a wiley old snake with some tricks up his sleeve when it come to grappling with some decent striking (although slow compared to Cormier). Not saying he’s going to win but I wouldn’t be shocked if he did.
people give mir too much credit for his grappling…you gotta get the guy to the ground to grapple with em…he dont impress me cormier should fight overeem for number 1 contender..then werdum and big foot after that..bendo gonna be a champ for a while till pettis steps up again
and what about Mousasi?
Mir always struggles with heavy handed strong wrestlers/grapplers so DC is a terrible match up but Mir can’t just avoid him now after som much trash talking has gone on!
Bendo will destroy gill and then they might as well throw that other cocky loudmouth pot head Diaz brother in with him just for good measure!
Melendez definitely deserves Bendo over “circus shit kick” Pettis. Pettis has zero pedigree in the UFC. Make him fight Maynard or Miller. Pettis is a whinny little bitch.
well this will be an easy one for hendo. doesnt matter how good you are because strikeforce competition is not on the level as UFC. Sounds just like the jake sheilds hype train. remember that one? dude is the biggest letdown in the UFC and oh what do ya know, hes on melendez fight team.
