Ben Askren not impressed with GSP’s victory: “100% sure I could beat GSP” | UFC NEWS

After Georges St. Pierre finished off another opponent the tweets started coming in about his performance. Many fans and fighters were not impressed with the victory; count Bellator’s Welterweight champion Ben Askren among those who were not impressed.

Askren didn’t hold back during or after the fight with his tweets.

Those were the tweets he sent while the fight was going down. After the fight, Askren made no bones about it; he believes he could beat GSP.

This would be a great match-up, the only reservation is we saw what GSP does to elite level wrestlers with mediocre striking when he fought Jon Fitch. Being realistic Askren’s striking is mediocre at best, his only chance would be to get GSP to the ground and wear him down with his grappling. His striking could improve before he moves to the UFC (if he does), but Askren does not believe that GSP will be the champion after he fights Johny Hendricks.

Both men are currently under contract with their organizations, so a match-up is awhile, if ever, away. But if they were to fight how do you think it turns out?

  1. magoo says:

You wouldn’t get by Diaz let alone GSP toilet brush head. Everyone thinks they can beat GSP, and if Henricks thinks he’s the one he better work on that cardio cause had it been a 5 round fight with Condit he would have been toast!

    • hendoooo says:

agreed, although I’m very surprised at how explosive hendricks was, if he wants to beat GSP he has to be able to last longer than 2 rounds. I think if he can get his cardio up, he might actually stand a chance (probably still lose, this is GSP we’re talking about).

  2. GOT RID OF FITCH (finally) says:

Only morons think Jon Fitch has world class wrestling. Jon Fitch sucked in college wrestling. All he has is layn pray over non wrestlers. Askren would mop the floor with Fitch. 100% agree Askren would beat GSP

  3. D-rak says:

How many good fighters in other organizations talk all kinds of sh!! And get there ass beat in the UFC….

  4. Gargoyle Wrestling says:

Yep, he;s right, Askren would nullify GSP;s strengths and completely dominate him on the ground. His GnP is better than GSP too. GSP won’t beat a wrestler. Hendricks will wreck him.

  5. Sean says:

We saw what GSP did to Josh K. You’ve got to be a lot more well-rounded than Askren to pose a legit threat to GSP with his takedown defense. Has Askren looked at his own tape lately? His fights are boring as hell and against much, much weaker opponents. He’d get destroyed by anyone within the top in the UFC. Hendricks does pose a threat because he has wrestling and power, but magoo is right about that too, Jonny needs to get that cardio up and make sure he can get off his back or else that’ll be easy pickings for GSP.

  6. Jon gagnon says:

1st of all there’s a reason why Ben whatever his name is is not in the UFC. 2nd GSP has destroyed wrestlers too. What does this guy who fights in the minors have that GSP wouldn’t dominate too. Quit being haters. He beats the fighters fair and square. Hendricks is just another wrestler w power. Been there done that. Hendricks struggled w Koshcheck and Condit. GSP DOMINATED them. Point?

    • Gargoyle Wrestling says:

Your point is well stated and you’re right to a point. But Hendricks, since fighting Kos, has developed his fighting skills much more since then. It’[s like saying GSP ain’t nothing because Hughes finished him! I don’t know, maybe I am just biased but Hendricks pretty much handled Condit. Some of those slams were incredible. GSP almost got finished by Condit but he did dominate Condit most of that fight. So I see Hendricks handling GSP’s game quite well. He closes the distance fast and has that left hand ready to go. GSP won’t out wrestle him. GSP has his jab and his kicks, but I think that Hendricks will close the distance and slam GSP down like he did Condit. When was the last time you saw GSP on his back? This is what Hendricks can do plus he’s got that left.

As far as Askren, Yes he hasn’t fought the UFC caliber fighters, but look what the Stikeforce guys are doing to the UFC fighters? Lima is no slouch and he dominated him. I think Askren could beat GSP.

Lima is no slouch and he dominated him. I think Askren could beat GSP. He could beat anybody in the top 5 UFC as well as be beaten.

      • Allmightysandman says:

        Some good points.

I totally disagree that condit almost finished GSP though….vicious head kick and GSP survived like a champion, recovered perfectly and went on to a decisive win. I think he put to rest all the “weak chin” bullshit by surviving that kick from Condit.

  7. trapt says:

Hahahahaha…… Gsp jr wants to fight gsp…… It would be the most one sided fight ever….. Or boringest….. You both suck…. You both have no dark side….. Youre no true fighter like nick, so dont try and talk urself into a fight u know u dont deserve, you bellator wet blanket…… Gtfo of here…. And cut your hair… The only thing youre good for is for a training partner for a serious fighter to get ready for gsp….

  8. Sasquatch says:

LOL… this clown thinks he can talk his way into a title fight like Diaz and Sonnen. GSP would just do what he alway’s does and beat him where he’s weakest… he’d batter the sh!t out of him in the striking department and bust his face like he did to Kos and Fitch.

  9. wormy38 says:

Ben is just a little more boring than gsp.but gsp would beat ben on feet

  10. Thurgood Jenkins says:

This fight would surpass Weidman/Maia as the most boring in MMA history.

  11. GRT 3000 says:

Ladies and gents another big mouth nobody trying to make a name for himself by name-dropping the champ. This lame ass Sonnen fame card needs to get the boot. ****er wins his fights in the shit leagues and starts shit talking the UFC champ. The sad thing is the way things are going, he’ll probably get the shot too.

  12. Jujitsu Player says:

Bore off Ben, you’re not even relevant. Just trying to talk his way into a lucrative PPV fight and ass whooping. You only have to look at the way GSP dominated Kos to see how he deals with other elite wrestlers. I don’t see it being any different against Askren or Hendricks for that matter.
