Anthony Pettis Injured – Johnson And Benavidez To Main Event For UFC On FOX 9

Anthony Pettis’ first title defense has been postponed.

According to a report on Fox Sports Live on Sunday night, the newly crowned UFC lightweight champion has suffered a knee injury, and will have to withdraw from his UFC on Fox 9 matchup against Josh Thompson. This is in stark contrast to what Dana White had reported Saturday night, telling Fox Sports that Pettis was “going to fight… for sure”.

The flyweight title fight between champ Demetrious Johnson and Joseph Benavidez that was set to headline the TUF 18 Finale will now move to the UFC on FOX 9 show, and in turn, a lightweight fight between Nate Diaz and Gray Maynard will move into the new main event spot for the TUF 18 Finale, up from the co-main event.

It’s unsure at this time whether or not Pettis’ injury is linked to his championship-winning fight with ben “Smooth” Henderson, in which Anthony had tweaked his left knee while checking a kick; what IS sure, however, is that Pettis has had some fairly bad luck when it comes to injuries sustained during his time with the UFC. Shoulder separations, staph infections and injuries to both knees have plagued “Showtime” over the last few years, but hopefully for Anthony (and the fans), this won’t keep him on the shelf for too long.

Man this sucks, I was hoping to see Pettis beat some ass for free on FOX, now it’s definitely going to be on PPV for sure and cost $. =(

Anthony Pettis scheduled for a title fight in a month….and he’s injured.

  3. T.Daddy says:

He should change his name to Anthony the injury Pettis… I know you Pettis nut huggers are gonna say ” oh people get injured in training all the time” he is the Lil Nog of the lightweight division

  4. UFC 84 Forever says:

Anthony Pettis has now patented this new move called the pull out. No, I jest. I was hoping the Thomson fight would be a big upset, but now who knows who’s next for that belt. Whoever it is, should be a good fight.

  5. KIDD433 says:

Maybe TJ and Thompson should now fight instead to solidify that #1 spot since TJ had earned it, just got screwed do to circumstances. Any thoughts people?

Yep, sounds fair. Though depending on how long Pettis is out, anything could happen. Gil could get a big win and jump to the top, Aldo could move to LW, Khabib Nurmagomedov could get another dominate win and jump to the top. The 155 division is packed and title seem to get passed around often. It’s like they’re making up for all the time Frankie and Gray Maynard took.
