Anthony Pettis Contemplating Drop In Weight To Challenge Jose Aldo

“I spoke to Anthony’s manager just a few hours ago and he told me that he was really disappointed, but he respects the decision. He would consider going down to 145 to fight Aldo. This is definitely something to monitor.”

While on the UFC on FUEL TV “UFC Tonight” program, Fuel reporter, Ariel Helwani, divulged that Anthony Pettis may be interested in dropping down a division to challenge for the UFC featherweight title.

He was in talks to rematch Benson Henderson after the two picked up wins at UFC 144, however Frankie Edgar was able to successfully talk his way into a rematch and that means Pettis got skipped over.

Gilbert Melendez is interested in having Pettis come over for a crack at the Strikeforce strap, but the Pettis camp may have other plans.

  1. Jason N says:

Would love to see pettis do what Edgar wouldn’t

    • Mike says:

^This. I couldn’t agree more. I mean I know the guy got humped to death by Guida but he got screwed time and time again in the LW division in the UFC. I don’t see why this wouldn’t be a good move for him.

    • Hightimes99 says:

Edgar fought Maynard and pettis won’t even do it once

      • lollololololol. Cause he knows Maynard would smash him into the ground, grind him out like Guida.

Pettis would get his fucking block knocked off by Aldo, and I’d love to see that. But no, he doesnt deserve a shot in either division

Too much ego, this kid is average at best since coming to the UFC. IF he fights Henderon again, he’s gonna get Cerrone’d (by that, I mean Henderson will take him out first round, we won’t get the 5 rounds expected, like Cerrone-Bendo 2).

Shit, the only “exciting” thing he’s done in the UFC is something an average turd like Guillard is EXPECTED to do lol.

        • Dog chapman says:

          Like smoke meth fagget

        • Shawn says:

Not exactly there Brandon. You look at this in a fighter’s career point of view, as well as UFC business. Maynard lost to Edgar in a trilogy. Decisively in the third. He’s got to work his way back up to the top. Pettis, was WEC champ coming into the UFC, and was suppose to fight Edgar to unify the LW titles. But due to an Edgar injury, he either had to wait for Edgar or continue to fight. He chose to continue to fight. Losing a DECISION to Guida. If you watched that fight, all Guida did was out wrestle and out work Pettis, but did very little of anything else. Hardly a finish, or dominance over Pettis. Pettis next two fights would be wins. Stephens fight was a battle, with Pettis coming out on top. That was a FIGHT. And the KO of a potential contender in Lauzon, surely put Pettis back on track to his lost title shot. In many people’s eyes, Pettis never got the title shot he earned and deserved. If Edgar didn’t whine about a rematch, the winner of the Diaz/Miller fight or Pettis would have been next in line at the title. But since Edgar got his wish, those other guys will now have to sit on the backburner. Some guys just want to keep fighting. So now, there’s an open #1 contender spot in the FW division to be filled. IMO, anyone of the the top 5 guys in the LW division can easily fill that spot. And Pettis has stepped up and is willing to take the challenge that Edgar didn’t want to. He playing smart with his career. So let’s say he were to fight Maynard, he’s in a higher position than Grey right now. IF he were to lose, that would mean Maynard would automatically be shot right back up to where he was. And that’s after just losing. That doesn’t happen in the UFC. That’s not even an option in the UFC’s eyes. People tend to forget that the UFC is a BUSINESS. They make fights the fans want to see, but they also make sure the fights will bring in the most views. A Pettis vs Aldo match would garner more views and hype than a Pettis vs Maynard, and even an Edgar vs Henderson II. I know I’d rather see a battle between Aldo and Pettis (yes, it woudl be a fight. Anyone who is a true fight fan will know this). I’m not to excited to see Edgar get his ass handed to him for a second time. Love the guy, but I don’t see it playing out any other way. Logistics, that’s how fights are made. Unless you whine enough. lol

    • phace says:

I doubt the UFC will let him fight Aldo next.

  2. Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

I don’t think he’s going to get an immediate match with Aldo either. He needs to beat one more person!

    • Mike McMack says:

He needs to get one fight at 145 just to get that first weight cut behind him. If he gets the title fight after his first cut he’ll have a hard time going 5 rounds. I think he’ll make 145 fairly easily but you can never tell. He’s pretty lean at 155 and I’m not sure how much weight he cuts to make that weight. The whole weight cutting thing in MMA is pretty crazy.

    • Hightimes99 says:

I don’t think he deserves a shot with Bendo at all! But if drops to 45 he def should get an immediate shot

  3. Matt says:

He supposedly turned down a match with Maynard. Aldo would be tough though too. But at least it’s for a title, and with Frankie getting his rematch, there is only one title shot for him right now. And that is with Aldo.

  4. m says:

Whoah! That makes things a little interesting in the FW division. Aldo v. Pettis in Brazil UFC 147!!

  5. krafty11 says:

could Pettis make weight? just wondering is all. he looks pretty lean at 155. And he would prob lose the speed advantage against Aldo. But still would love to see the fight if it happens.

  6. DewYouKnow8 says:

AMAZING KICKBOXING/MT IN THIS ONE. DO IT DO IT DO IT.

  7. leafy says:

aldo cuts down to 145 from a decent weight so yea i dont see why he couldnt make the weight, problem is getting used to it and fighting at your best loseing a extra 10 pounds! 10 pounds weight cut on its own would kill me lol

  8. true mma says:

    Edgar was scared unlike pettis.

  9. slacker says:

    Awesome fight! Hope it happens.

  10. Nick says:

I’d love to see that fight. Frankie had to cry his way to a rematch and Pettis and the winner of Diaz/Miller got screwed. I respect that Anthony is willing to drop down. Don’t think he’ll win though.

  11. vic the brick says:

ah man, now that would be a sick fight

  12. true mma says:

Pettis has no other choice that bitch ass Edgar cried for another title shot with Ben because his bitch ass was scared of aldo.

  13. stiffler says:

aldo will kill both edgar and pettis.

  14. Bertram says:

Ive always thought anthony could go down if he chose too. It isnt like hes a huge lightweight like say, gleison tibau or maynard, or guillard. I bet hes more or less aldo’s size anyways

  15. the original steve says:

would like to see the benson pettis rematch first

  16. Edgar says:

Fuck all you Aldo loving faggs! He couldn’t even finish kenflo or mark ! Only cause he KO’d Mendez the weak shit dosent mean he could beat Edgar or pettis! I think pettis is a hard test for aldo. Aldo will get fucked up if he goes to 155 fighting bigger guys. And plus I didn’t hear you faggs saying shit when Penn got a rematch.

    • E says:

lol the real frankie edgar upset at all of the comments

    • Nick says:

Well first penn fight was a lot closer than this fight and aldo has had problems cuting weight so I would be surprised if he finshed kenflo and he’s actually be preaty good at 55 my opinion take it however

    • jonsey says:

what are u rtalkiung about,,penn got a rematch cuz all people knows the first fight was a robbery….pettis and aldo would be good fight but aldo has more power and would take hhim down an win liek that….u are 1 angry ass loser u need help

      • James Troy says:

man i have been a penn fan since forever. hes one of my top 5 fighters all time. but he lost both fights to edgar. there was no robbery. he got a rematch because he is BJ penn. his name and his career accolades got him a rematch.

and because of that, edgar suddenly thinks he desrves a rematch just because he gave bj penn a rematch. edgar didnt give maynard a rematch. it was a draw. edgar is a spoiled cry baby who thinks the UFC owes him something. he is doing nothing but clogging up the 155 division. there are so many great title fights waiting to happen but edgar is in the way. just get him out of the division please.

        • Vince Vuong says:

I watch that first fight. over and over again. i scored it for Penn… and in the UFC you have to beat the champ to be the champ. it was a robbery, watch it man trust me. but the second fight, without a doubt penn got handed.

        • jonesy says:

if i was bitch penn fan i wold not admit the 2nd fight bj got smashed..but the first fight was the worst robbery ive seen…….even guys who hated bj said the first fight bj won,,

    • k says:

I know right? they’re deep in ben and jose’s nuttsack

    • Xaninho says:

Penn got screwed so that was a legit rematch. Edgar got his ass handed to him so no grounds for a rematch and he still got it, there’s a difference.

  17. tank says:

@ Edgar the only faggs are you and dad. Stop jerking off to Edgar pics.

  18. Jb says:

Wow how can any of you talk shit about Edgar. One of the best guys UFC has. Never complained when UFC made him do back to back rematches. If anyone deserves a rematch don’t ya think it’s the guy who always gives them. ?

  19. je says:

Only reason he got rematches is because he couldn’t finish fights or they’re really close. What kind of champ is that. I know he destroyed Maynard, but it only took him 3 fights to do it.

    • mac4719 says:

well look to gsp or cruz when was the last time they finished a fight, gsp said when the competition gets tougher its harder to finish them, frankie deserved a rematch thats the least the ufc owed him but think he’s a smaller guy yeah who maybe should fight at 145 but he’s beat guy’s who could easily fight at 170 and none of them have finished him, petis should go down to 145 cos its a weak devision without many stars and can you imaine the striking game him against aldo it could be fireworks

      • Shawn says:

Cruz is questionable for sure. I think Faber one their last fight. It was close. Good thing they have a rematch coming. But remember, Faber, had to work back up to that. It wasn’t immediate and he didn’t whine. As for GSP, guy. Go watch his fights again. And tell me which one were ever close, or even remotely close. Sure he hasn’t finished his last few fights, but if you look at his opponents at the end of the fight, you’d think otherwise. They got beat the f’k up. Hands down. Just like Edgar got beat the f’k up. Hands down. People need to learn to watch fights as fight fans and not wrestling fans.

  20. Kingron84 says:

Exactly im all for edgars heart but people need to realize he defeated the lightweight king at the time so naturally he’d get a rematch then the Maynard fight, well guess what he did have to rematch him because it was a draw and the current champ was now 0-1-1 vs the top contender, doesn’t look pretty to fans.

  21. kermith flores says:

First and foremost, the whole Ufc is TURNING OUT TO BE A JOKE! HOW THE HELL CAN A CHAMP GET BEAT OUT OF A COMPANY THEN GET PICKED BY ANOTHER AND GET A TITLE? IF THEY DID IT FOR HENDERSON! THEN WHY WONT THEY GIVE PETTIS A SHOT AT HIM AGAIN AFTER THE REMATCH WITH FRANK? AND WHY DOES FRANK GET ONE SO FAST WHEN NO ONE ELSE! NO MATTER WHAT DIVISION TBEYRE IN GETS TO FIGHT FOR THE TITLE SO GODDAM QUICK? FROM WRESTLING! BOXING!BBALL! BASEBALL AND ALL OTHERVSPORRTS YOU HAVVE TO WORK YOUR WAY UPBTO GET TNHE CHANCE! LET ALONE BE THOUGHT OF IN THAT RESPECCT? IF THATS THE CASE THEN GIVE A BELT TO SOMEONE WHO REALLY DESREVES IT AND WONT CRY LIKE A LITTLE GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. kermith flores says:

I always believed pettis shouldve gotten the very first crak at the ufc gold once the merge started and that had alot to do with all the bull they been putting that kid thru,,,,,

  23. kermith flores says:

As for edgar . Sooooooooooooo what… he will looose again then hopefully pettis will finally get his chance and even if its not for the gold just for rec he can and will demolish the both of them. Edgar and henderson or is that his real name. Oh well whatever
    L,,,,,,,,,,,,,

    • What planet are you on? If pettis was half as good as he thinks he is, he’d be the lightweight champ, not the guy he BARELY edged out in a 5rd contest (only got that 5th round cause of a fancy kick in the last few seconds).

  24. The natural says:

Wow ur all haters specially true mma ur a troll and 1/2

  25. Mike says:

Id say go for it, only cause your so cocky id like to see Aldo knock him out. Aldo would destroy Pettis.

  26. STANDALONE-DIEALONE says:

I WOULD LUV 2 SEE THIS SHIET HAPPEN. I WANNA SEE ALDO CHALLENGED TO THE FULLEST EXTENT SINCE FRANKIE AINT GONNA DO IT THIS TIME AROUND. THIS WOULD BE STRAIGHT FIREWORKS IF IT EVER GOES DOWN. I WOULDNT MIND SEEIN BARBOZA VS. PETTIS GO DOWN TOO. SHIETT I THINK EDSON BARBOZA WILL BE THE CHAMP IN THE YEAR AROUND 2013-2014.

  27. Shawn says:

See, this makes me have more respect for Pettis over Edgar. He is willing to take on any challenge. Especially if it brings him closer to a title shot. And its not like he won’t be able to move back up to 155. Wud love to see a match between Pettis and Aldo. Even more than an Edgar and Aldo. Edgar is perhaps removing himself from the ranks of the UFC. If the UFC decides to give Pettis a shot at Aldo, n win. And Edgar loses to Henderson. Doesn’t leave much room for Edgar to move without having to work back up. Which I have a feeling will be harder. And he will eventually become a gate keeper status. Not smart in his decisions.

  28. UFC VIDEOS says:

    Would be an epic matchup.

  29. Vince Vuong says:

I like the kid cause hes creative with his striking, and has a sick ass triangle.

This guys a fighter so he fights! Win or Lose.. he FIGHTS and that’s what fighters fucking do. At the end of the day, these guys don’t do this because they wanna kick someones head off, or take someone to the ground. they want a challenge…. again… so they fight.

  30. Thom says:

    Aldo would destroy Pettis.

  31. Donovan says:

Aldo: winner by decapitation. He’s lucky that the UFC offers health insurance now

  32. maurice says:

i still dont understand y ppl think pettis doesnt deserve a title shot. any man that can knock joe lauzon out like that without breaking a sweat is a beast. pettis is getting better, the guida fight was a set back, but its not like he got beat up. he got outwrestled and lay n prayed. and he outstruck benson in a 25 min fight and landed that showtime kick and almost ended the fight afterwards. im thinking nate or pettis is about to go on a bj penn “reign of terror” as the lw champion.

  33. T.Daddy says:

    Aldo by complete desruction

  34. Jujitsu Player says:

Would love to see this fight, give Aldo the edge but I think it would be competitive. A few of the better 155lb’s have to drop down because there in nobody at 145lb who can even make a decent challenge against Aldo.

  35. bart says:

I swear on my life Im not lying when I say this….. I met Anthony Pettis when he was with his teamate Pat Barry when they did the fight for the troops at Ft Hood Tx. Im a contractor and was at work in one of the motorpools. Out of all the motorpools they used ours to do the weigh ins and the Q&A. Nobody even knew until the last second because they were trying to keep it hush hush. I lost my fuckn mind when the fighters started showing up!!! I said “Fuck Work!!!” Anyway…..I got a Pic with Anthony and when he was walking away I said ” Yo Anthony”…..he stoped and turned around, and I said ” One day your going to fight Jose Aldo!” He looked at me all crazy and turned back around and kept walking. I bet he was thinking ” this dumb mutha fucker doesnt even know were in two different weight classes” LMFAO!!! I SWEAR TO YALL IM NOT MAKING THIS SHIT UP! Fuck, I was the only contracyor standing in the middle of all the soldiers and even got to ask Dana white to questions. All the soldiers were looking at me crazy as hell! Im even on Danas blog standing with all the soldiers at the weigh ins and Q&A . It was without a doubt one of the coolest moments of my life…completley unexpected! I met Pat Barry to, and Chuck Liddell the night before at the airport. I tried to meet Joe Rogan after the weighins but he took off like a fuckn ninja after they were done…..I wanted to ask him If he wanted to smoke some bud, lol. Anyway, I got way off track…I still get real ezcited when I think about it. 2 soldiers sold me some tickets But they would let me in Robert Grey Airfield to watch the fights because I wasnt a soldier anymore. I was mad but after I thought about how lucky I was to have them in our motorpool while I was at work I was very thankful. Anyway. If they they fight I predicted that shit years before and even told Pettis it would happen!!!!

    • Jujitsu Player says:

Cool story dude…I met Tito Ortiz at Mandalay Bay years ago, he had tiny calf muscles and an even bigger head in real like…afraid that’s all I’ve got.

      • bart says:

Haha, that head is powerfull as shit though! If headbutting were legal he would still have the belt and not be retired!!

  36. mj says:

Nice story, but anyone who has served knows we can still get on base aftter you are out. Your id is a little different… but can still hit up the NEX.

    • bart says:

I can get on base with a regular ID, but they wouldnt let me into the airfield were the fight was becuase I wasnt a soldier.
