Anthony Pettis: Aldo’s Never Seen Stand-Up Like Mine

“My whole career I’ve been fighting wrestlers. If you look back, all of my fights have been against wrestlers. Give me some strikers in front of me and you see how I perform. Another great reason why I chose to fight Aldo: He’s a great fighter, he’s a stand-up guy and he’s going to test me. I feel like my stand-up’s something he’s never seen. He’s not going to be able to find training partners that can do what I do. I’m used to the leg kicks. I’ve been kicked there since I was five, so I feel like my range is longer than him. I’m bigger than him, I can match him in speed and power and I’ve got a style like nobody else’s.”

This August at UFC 163, Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis, will take on UFC featherweight champion, Jose Aldo.

In this interview with The Bleacher Report, Pettis discusses what he believes are his advantages against his Brazilian foe.

  1. quazzi says:

On the feet this is a interesting match up but if aldo wants to take pettis down he should be able to and aldo will outclass him on the ground

    • GOT RID OF FITCH (finally) says:

I agree maybe Aldo should pull a Guida and just dominate pettis on ground and lay on him. We all know he won’t but next wrestler that Pettis faces will dominate him on ground. I think Pettis deserves any of these title fights since he was just spanked a few fights ago by Guida (WHO SUCKS)

      • jp says:

Aldo could never be Guida in the wrestling department… lol smh. Maybe you guys forgot the last time Aldo tried to wrestle in a fight vs hominick… he gassed as soon as he started taking him down and so much so that he got destroyed in the 5th round on his back the whole time… he gets gassed at all, it’s goodnight aldo cuz pettis will go all 5 without losing a step..

    • jp says:

What makes you think he can take ‘em down? One name… Ben Askren! Pettis doesn’t give up a takedown in this fight without a slip… If anything, pettis takes Aldo like he did to stephens in his fight… Wrestling goes to Pettis!

  2. 123 says:

This is the best fight the UFC has ever made.. I prefer this over Jones vs Silva to be honest.

  3. NATE "The Cheat" MARQUARDT says:

ANY high-mid level wrestler can beat Pettis

    • GRT 3000 says:

UFC LW champ couldn’t…he’s pretty high level I’d say.

      • GOT RID OF FITCH (finally) says:

Lucky kick the fight was close up until that point. Benson would win rematch for sure

    • jp says:

Ben Henderson and jeremy stephens…? He also has one of the Best college wrestlers of ALL TIME in his camp since the Guida fight in Askren (welterweight)… the reason why he tested out his wrestling in the stephens fight… If he can stop the bigger askren from taking him, he could stop ANY wrestler in his weight class…

  4. Jake from State Farm says:

Hey dumb fuck did you really think guida spanked pettis? You just be a retard. Guida barley beat him! If you wanna see someone get spanked go watch the Cain vs JDS rematch and that’s what you call spanked. Holding onto someone for dear life is not spanking them idiot! for all you guys who think Jose can take down pettis must be new to this sport. Pettis is bigger then aldo and Jose will not be able to take him down! Mark my worlds! Watch

  6. Ddddddd says:

I surely wouldn’t say Pettis can be takin down easily. he has Askren to work wresting with and does work hard on his take down defense no doubt in my mind. His style absolutely relies on it and to think he doesn’t is just naive. Why in hell would anyone even think Aldo has good takedowns? He’s into BJj. I’m sure he has the takedowns of an unbelievably coordinated dude that has worked on wrestling because he has no choice. That’s irrelevant

  7. Broman says:

This is my most anticipated fight of the year. I hope these two keep it standing. If they do, it’ll be fireworks

  8. Rain_man says:

This is a great matchup, I still wish pettis would have tried to beat benson (again). Anyone pettis (or Aldo) fight would be a great fight tho. Both are great in their own way. BTW I WISH EVERYONE WOULD STOP SAYING PEOPLE ARE “NEW TO THE SPORT” or “MMA NOOBS” or “TUF BANDWAGONERS” etc.. It’s almost as bad as insulting someone’s grammar. It’s not like you are all knowledgeable. You regurgitate the same bs u read in forums. It makes you sound more stupid than the person you’re insulting. I’d rather you back up your information with facts and cite your sources and actually be more knowledgable, than just say “blah I know more than you blah” lol please…

    • Ddddddd says:

Lay it down brother. Your giving shit to people about giving shit to people. Lets hear what ya know and the resources in wich they came. I don’t know fighters or their camps but I know I don’t miss a fight. My style in delivering my oppinion or anyone else’s isn’t the issue it’s a matter of perspective.

  9. The Way Of The Dutchman says:

If this goes to the ground I’ll eat my shoe lol. Both are stand-up fighters first and both have great takedown defense, I do think Aldo’s takedown defense is better than Pettis’ since he proved that against good wrestlers already and Pettis couldn’t stop Guida from humping him.

  10. KIDD433 says:

This will make a hell of a fight.Pettis definitely has a unique style.A kickboxer with a taekwondo twist to him.Aldo is a Thai boxing wrecking machine.May the best man walk away the champion.

  11. JAMMA says:

If they go to war Aldo will win, he has a pretty decent chin and regardless of the size difference Aldo is a class apart, the only fight which Aldo lacked consistency in was the hominick fight, although hominick looked like sloth. And to the guy that says that Jose only knows BJJ, what so that doesn’t mean he can easily take pettis down? When Aldo does take him down if pettis isn’t already out in the first, he will dominate him. You just have to take Aldo’s cardio into consideration though.

  12. jp says:

I see it around 50/50 that they KO each other in the first 2 rounds but the 3rd on, the odds are really getting stacked against Aldo… Aldo can’t go 5 rounds strong, Pettis can, simple.

  13. The Way Of The Dutchman says:

    Exactly!
