| Today BJPenn.com gained word that a light-heavyweight battle between Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (15-4) and Mike Kyle (20-9-1) is slated to headline World Series of Fighting (WSOF) 5. Officials made the announcement earlier today.
WSOF 5 is scheduled to take place on September 14th at Revel Atlantic City in New Jersey and Johnson vs. Kyle will be the featured bout on the main card, which will air on the NBC Sports Network following the online prelims. It has also bee announced that tickets for the event start at $29 and go on sale this Friday, July 19th.
The event has not been fully pieced together yet but BJPenn.com will be updating you with announcements as additional bouts are made official for the event.
Anthony “Rumble” Johnson will enter the fight riding a five-fight winning-streak after leaving his longtime home of the UFC. Johnson was a former welterweight in the UFC but has found a home in the light heavyweight division since joining the WSOF promotion. However, his most recent victory was at heavyweight where he claimed a decision victory over former UFC champion Andrei Arlovski in March at WSOF 2. That bout gave Johnson his fifth straight win and his seventh in his last eight fights. “Rumble” is now 2-0 under the WSOF banner and will be looking to remain undefeated in the promotion with a win over Mike Kyle in September.
Mike Kyle, who has also been formerly employed by the UFC, has fought under several promotional banners including the UFC, WEC and Strikeforce. Kyle went 1-2-1 NC in his last four Strikeforce appearances and will be looking to right the ship that has steered off course in the latter part of his MMA career. Although he’s faced had some tough outings in recent past Kyle will enter the fight in September with Johnson after scoring a 21-second knockout win over Travis Wiuff at CFA 11 in May.
Kyle will have his hands full with the surging “Rumble” but a win over Johnson at WSOF 5 could place him right at the top of the WSOF light heavyweight contention ladder and he could very well try to make one last final run at an MMA title starting in New Jersey on September 14th.
