Anderson Silva Will Get Immediate Rematch if He Loses to Weidman, Says Dana White
By Christopher Murphy @MurphMMA
UFC president Dana White announced to media on Monday that middleweight champion, and long-standing pound-for-pound king, Anderson Silva would be granted an immediate rematch if he loses to Chris Weidman. Weidman is set to challenge for Silva’s belt this Saturday at UFC 162.
Since winning the UFC middleweight belt in 2006, Anderson Silva (33-4, 16-0 UFC) has not faltered as a professional fighter. He is currently the longest reigning champion, holding the longest winning streak at 16 and the longest title defense streak at 10.
These accolades, said White, earns him an immediate rematch if he were to ever lose in the Octagon.
“I’d do the rematch the next fight,” the UFC president told MMAJunkie.com. “Guy hasn’t lost in the UFC ever, has beat everybody. He loses that fight, he’s the guy for a rematch if he wants it.”
This of course is an option if Silva loses. As the favored fighter coming into this bout, the UFC also has some obvious plans in place if the champion retains his belt. Dana White said that a superfight between Silva and either light heavyweight champion Jon Jones or welterweight champion, Georges St-Pierre, is still a possibility.
“He didn’t sign a 10-fight deal to not take big fights. He cares about legacy,” White said, according to Brett Okamoto of ESPN.
Any of this, whether the rematch or the superfight, will have to wait for how this Saturday night unfolds.
Be sure to catch UFC 162: Silva vs. Weidman live this Saturday from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Preliminary fights are set to air on Facebook, beginning at 3:30/6:30pm PT/ET, and on FX at 5/8pm PT/ET. The main card will air on Pay Per View beginning at 7/10pm PT/ET.
