Anderson Silva Offers Simple Response to Racism
There has been a mind-boggling amount of foolishness happening in the sports world lately. From the ridiculous taunting by fans of Barcelona defender Dani Alves (who is Brazilian born) to the downright stupid and slightly confusing actions of LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling, some people just can’t stop themselves from showing everyone how much of an idiot they really are. While I could elaborate into the cases, I won’t. From personal experience, I have noticed that these people get infinite life from the attention they receive and it will not be my job to make them feel good about themselves.
Instead, I would like to emphatically exert that while there are morons out there, I refuse to allow them to taint my sports, my hobbies, or my intelligence with their foolishness. Since I have entered the world of MMA, both as a fan and as a professional, I have had nothing but an amazing experience with fighters, with coaches, and with fans of every culture.
I was taught Portuguese in the stands of the Werdum v Browne fight, I spoke French to a wrestler during a photo shoot, I’ve even made friends with a guy from Nairobi who was pleasantly amused that my first name was Kenya. I have received nothing but royal treatment from the fans and fighters of the sport I love, not because I deserve it, but because WE ALL deserve it.
The best way to handle these situations is to remember your own better upbringing, and when directly faced with it, remind them simply that they’re idiots and move on as Anderson Silva did yesterday.
(Translation: “Racism, prejudice and discrimination are an inexplicable collective stupidity.”)
