Anderson Silva Nearly Got Into Street Fight With Jose Landi-Jons In Brazil
Anderson “The Spider” Silva almost fought Jose “Pele” Landi-Jons (27-15) in Curitiba, Brazil. In a recent article of the Portal Do Vale Tudo website, it appears that Landi-Jons and the UFC middleweight champion nearly scrapped in the middle of the street of Curitiba due to some beef that they held for years.
Sherdog translated the article:
“Anderson was jogging in the company of a friend when Pelé, who was driving by the location, saw his enemy and decided to go back and confront him about stuff Anderson wrote about Pele in his book. According to witnesses, the only reason they didn’t fight was because Anderson’s friend stopped them.”
“I saw him jogging in the runway, turned around and called him out for a fight. He said he would fight me, but soon came a car full of security guards, saying there would be no fight. Anderson started screaming, calling me a punk. I cursed him a lot as well and told him that he is the champion outside, but in Curitiba he is nothing. He always challenged me; I accepted and beat him twice, now I’m challenging him. I wish him a long life with the UFC belt that brings so much pride to the people of Curitiba, but I think we owe it to Curitiba: Anderson x Pele part 3, maybe in a UFC in Curitiba,” Landi-Jons said to PVT translated by Sherdog.
PVT also gave some history of Silva and Landi-Jons. The fighters were rivals in the early 90s. They fought twice under Muay Thai rules where Landi-Jons won the decisions. Silva still became part of Chute Box and aimed for the No. 1 spot in his weight class against his rival. When Silva became the middleweight champion of the UFC, he helped Landi-Jons with training and financially.
Their quarrel started when Landi-Jons read a section in Silva’s book. It was about an episode when Landi-Jons splashed water on Silva and his daughter driving a car over water. Although Landi-Jons said the story was not true, Silva confirmed it many times.
Silva (33-4) is set to fight Chris Weidman (9-0) at UFC 162 in Las Vegas, Nev. on July 6, 2013.
