Anderson Silva: "I'll fight for another six or seven years"

“I’ll fight for another six or seven years and then I’ll stop. I stopped to think about it and I’ll postpone my retirement for a little longer. Then I’ll think about TV. I guess it’s interesting,”

UFC middleweight kingpin, Anderson Silva, took to Brazilian media outlet Globo.com recently to discuss the status of his career.

With his manager Ed Soares usually fielding question on behalf of the champ it has been widely thought that the pound for pound king was going to retire once his current UFC contract had matured.

Silva fans can now rest easy because according to him, “The Spider” isn’t going anywhere for a long time.

Good news for the fans, nightmarish ramifications for the rest of the middleweight division.

  1. El Charlie says:

Nice! The Chael fight’s bound to happen now. Can someone say tap.

  2. Joe says:

    and bones vs. the spider!!!

    • Ethan says:

      drop that talk… it won’t happen…

      • Rob says:

        Why not?

Seriously, I don’t mean to have a go, but if people are going to make blunt statements like that in a DISCUSSION area, can you at least back it up with your reasoning.

        • TheBraveReply says:

exactly. How about an educated response instead of just ” it won’t happen” explain why. This IS a discussion. I for one think the people want this fight and its gonna happen.

        • Darren says:

I would like to respond…this will come off as disrespectful, but there is no intention.

Anderson is a tough dude AND he is a smart dude, don’t let the effimine portugese make you think otherwise. He has hand picked his opponents 80% of the time he has been champ. He has quite a bit of say in who/when he fights (and righly so), and he does not rematch close fights or fight styles that he does not match up well with = wrestlers (go back and find his losses and the closest thing he has to a chink in his armor is wrestling).

So unless the money exceeds the negative back blow a (bad) loss could cause (he is getting into tv = $$$$ and real high level Brazilian fame, might have his own show like Magic Johnson – hopefully his show will fare better!), he should not take that fight ANYMORE then an undersized GSP should fight Mr. Silva (think the end of Roy Jones Jr.’s career against light heavies).

Better is to build upon his highlight footages, rack up some easy millions and keep his face pretty for ESPN Brasilia!

        • Brandon Wheaton says:

cause Silva is scared lol, didn’t you hear Soares?

        • DontBeScaredHomie says:

Because Jones only has one title defense and still has fights at LHW, you guys get way to ahead of yourselves. By the way I don’t know of anyone that want to see this fight besides Jones’s bandwagon fans that think he is unbeatable. I would much rather see him fight Rashad, Machida and maybe Hendo depending on the Shogun fight plays out before he even considers fighting Anderson. Also the UFC won’t make it happen anytime soon because if Jones gets clowned by Andy like im sure he will all his hype will be gone and alot less people will want to see him fight.

        • Brandon Wheaton says:

          This is exactly why.

Silva, Jones, & GSP are all hype machines.

Why do you think fighters like Diaz & Penn put on a show, while Silva gets clowns & GSP does lay & pray?

          They are hype.

        • justin says:

i think this comment is the most accurate out of everyone else’s on here

        • bob says:

its not worth it to silva, jones is becoming what silva is now plus wrestling, silva wont risk his reputation on that fight

        • Zack says:

Jones wants to be silva. He tries to strike like silva but he’s not silva. Andy would tear that ass up

    • joe2 says:

      it will never happen

    • Mike McMack says:

Don’t ask for that fight unless you wanna see Anderson get smashed. Thats a guaranteed a** whooping for Anderson if he fights Bones. Jones’ wrestling and ground and pound will be too much for Anderson. Not to mention Jones’ size and reach advantage over Spidey, Anderson is smart he knows that at MW he can continue to cement his legacy as the best ever. I think Anderson would be great at LHW but he’d get smashed by Jones fo sho.

      • Darren says:

If Rashad loses to Jones (which I think he will IMHO), I would like to see him drop to 185 and fight Mr. Silva.

        • Mach00man says:

I like Rashad and all, but he is not ready for those type of problems. He would be better off training with Silva.

        • Mike McMack says:

I’d like to see Rashad at 185 too, I think any well rounded fighter with a strong wrestling base has a great chance against Silva.

  3. Jaime Lopez says:

Can’t wait to see Chael tap again!

  4. Jmad says:

Good to hear. Couldn’t imagine MMA without Silva.

    • Calvin says:

see silva thought about it and was like wait a sec you gotta be high to think u can whoop my ass and was like yeah ill whoop ass til im 45 like couture

  5. alan says:

people I think Silva should fight that guy from Poland Mamed Khalidov trust me guys he’s a beast and with all the respect for spider I think he would get his ass wiped! :D

  6. baydenb says:

Silvas been askin for a fight wit gsp……. Gsp was supposed 2 b moving down in weight….REALLY GSP,,,, he dont wanna fight silva,,,if he does itl b way aftr silvas past his prime…hes 35 now,,,,,gsp 32 u do the math..

  7. BJPennrules says:

GSP will never!, fight Anderson Silva he would be knocked out in the 1st round…
that why his idiot trainer is thinking about GSP droping to 155…

  8. Digs says:

Anderson will continue to knock out anyone in the middleweight division.

Strong wrestlers have the best chance of grinding out a decision. Sonnen. Hendo. and maybe….Munoz.

  9. fight chael anderson says:

instead of asking gsp..just fight chael sonnen and let’s see if you can make chael tap again or if chael will woop silva!

  10. Zan says:

I would love to see the spider fight for another 6-7 years but we all know that this would change if he starts to get his ass kicked. Randy Couture is the only fighter I can think of that had such a long shelf life (maybe because he started later than most??). But I am sad to see BJ and Fedor just fall off the cliff so fast.

    • Mo says:

BJ fights, he hasn’t been finished since GSP due to corner stoppage. Fedor has been finished in all of his last 3 fights.

      • Zan says:

yeah but to get beat up by Nick Diaz? Diaz didn;t look like he improved much, he has the same weird punching style. Yet Diaz couldn;t even beat Diego Sanchez or Sean Sherk…two guys that BJ destroyed a few years ago.

  11. RCS says:

Thats a long time to duck Chael.

    • TheXperience says:

There’s no “ducking” going on…. Silva just doesn’t wanna fight on Chael’s terms.. when Chael feels like it. Silva is the CHAMP.. he’ll decide at his convenience when it’s time to lay a legendary WHOOPIN’ down on Chael. I bet you if Chael didn’t talk as much shitttt as he’s done lately and just kept destroying everyone in his way like he did with Stann… Silva/Sonnen 2 would’ve been booked already… !! It’s the disrespect that makes Silva think he does not deserve a shot period…

      • fight chael anderson says:

its dana white’s decision not silva or sonnen! silva and sonnen will happen asap! and silva will get get his ass whoop till the match end for sure!

      • Mike McMack says:

Sonnen feels like he has to talk crap to Anderson just to get a fight with him, Chael needs to just be patient. Anderson had surgery on his shoulder recently and at 36 it wont heal overnight. Once healed Anderson will shut Chael up for good, no doubt. That first fight was against and Anderson with cracked ribs, trying to defend a takedown with broken ribs would be tough IMO. I just wanna see the rematch so there’s no more questions either way.

        • jersey says:

everybody and his cracked ribs lol. they wouldnt clear somebody with cracked ribs to fight . silvas a liar, simple as that

  12. Nat says:

Good to know he’ll be around but I hope he doesn’t stay past his prime, this last fight with Okami he was taking hits that I don’t think he meant to take with his head bobbin moves. I don’t think Chael deserves a rematch just for the steroid use and the clear tapout, but I do think this fight should still happen so we can see the real Silva come to fight, because any of Silva’s real fans would see in that fight he wasn’t the same Anderson we know and love. I still think SIlva can beat Chael either by submission or TKO due to strikes.

  13. mezzanoche says:

So…I guess Ed Soares doesn’t know WTF he is talking about? Isn’t his job to manage and interpret?

  14. matt says:

People on this forum are dumb as they come. Anderson. Jones will not ever happen. Jones is a huge lhw probably fighting at 240 give or take, anderson is a huge middle weight, coming in at maybe 200. Make enough sense morons?

    • Brandon Wheaton says:

Right on. Cause only real fighters, like BJ Penn will take a with bigger guys (like Lyoto Machida).

Silva and Soares have both admitted he’s scared to fight certain people too. I’d be worried after making a career of fighting hand picked opponents too.

    • ThaGreenBandit says:

Did that make you feel better? You stroke your ego enough, mathew, mr mma expert?

  15. Zack says:

That sucks for everyone at middle weight lol I hope he goes after bones tho

  16. Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

He doesn’t have much top mw talent left. If and when he blast through them I predict he will move to lhw and forget the GSP fight, he’s going to move to the lw. Whether that’s through losing the title or defeating the talent left in the ww division.

    • Brandon Wheaton says:

He won’t move, he’s scared to go up and fight Jones just like GSP is scared to come up and fight him.

185 is the weakest division in the UFC anyway, that’s why he’s champ. More proof is Rumble’s weak ass finally moving up to 185.

Like Soares said, Silva started his career fighting chumps, MADE his career fighting chumps, and wants to finish his career fighting chumps.

      • Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

Rumble ain’t weak and I doubt Anderson is scared to fight Jones but he is wary of his wresting now that it is apparent that wrestling is Anderson’s Achilles heel. Anderson is a smart fighter with excellent accuracy and I doubt he will make the same mistakes he made against Chael or any other future ground game specialist. But really though I could care less if Anderson wins or loses but lets see him move to a different weight class. I wouldn’t mind seeing him in ww if he could make the cut.

  17. P R O D I G Y says:

Silva will retire when Chael says so.

  18. Dana White says:

    CHA-CHING$$$

  19. Fortyb4five says:

I can see Andy fighting into his late 40’s, i’m picturing him with a sick Miyagi goatee.

  20. anderson hater says:

Of course anderson will fight GSP….but the pussy wont fight Jon Jones….

Silva is like, hey little fella, come up to my weight class…what a fuckin pussy…!

Im sick of everyone saying how fuckin great silva is….Chael sonnen is going to beat silva’s ass with a wet KKK bible going by the comments he has made.

After that BJ Penn is going to visit the rocks in Hawaii and get some bullshit spiritual message from his ancestors that he is suppose to return against a weak opponent and possible coach TUF. All you dickheads out there will be wearing his mma shirts thinking you are bad asses. I know what these fools do in Hawaii….spend shit load of money on 2-3 jujitsu classes who can’t even touch their fuckin toes.

UFC is becoming bullshit…..at least in Pride there was raw violence…..bring back the pride days or early ufc days….

    • EP says:

do everyone a favor and go back to smoking ur crack pipe bro.

you sound the biggest idiot and tool bag. if u want to go on rants about nothing but a bunch of bullshit and just talk shit on two mma legends, this is wrong website. go to sherdog or something.

that was the lamest post ive ever read , just some little keyboard warrior trying act tough on here and shit talk two legends of the sport of mma,.. a sport which u obviously have no respect for.

      get lost douchebag.

    • ThaGreenBandit says:

So… You’re an angry racist who also knows nothing about MMA. That much is clear. What isn’t clear is why the fuck you are on BJPENN.COM, and talking dumb shit about BJ PENN. Stop supporting his site then, you fucking troll. You’re hiding behind a keyboard, calling a professional fighter a pussy, so that shows how pussy you are. The fuck outta here, bitch!

  21. Dangerous says:

Don’t even wanna waste my time on a classless douchebag like that. Only good thing you said was bring back Pride, but I can’t even take you seriously after insulting two MMA legends. Only a dumbass tool would say that kinda shit about BJ Penn on his website. The Prodigy is and will always be a true warrior to TRUE MMA fans and I hope he comes back better than ever so he can shutup haters like you. Regarding your dumbass comments Spider Silva, he’s already moved up to fight at light heavy twice and will probably have to move up again after knocking a non cheating sonnen the fuck out so you and him can shut the fuck up and stop hating. How is he a pussy when he’s destroyed his weightclass, will possibly destroy another weightclass higher than his and has even contemplating going up to fight at heavyweight? Get off the meth. And how the hell is Rumble Johnson weak? Most of his wins are K O’s and without a grueling weight cut, we’re probably gonna see Rumble stronger and better than ever.

  22. wayuk says:

6 or 7 more years sounds like 8-10 more fights

    3. bisping
    4. gsp
    5. jones
    6. rua
    7. henderson
    8. munoz
