Anderson Silva Cleared To Train – Possible End-Of-Year Return To The Octagon
Anderson Silva has been cleared to resume training.
MMAJunkie spoke to Silva’s longtime manager, Ed Soares, who informed them that Anderson Silva‘s doctor from Los Angeles’ Kerlan-Jobe clinic cleared the ex-champ to begin training in MMA.
When asked what’s in store for Anderson (and his fans) upon his return, Soares said “We’ve talked with the UFC, and we’ll see what they come up with”.
Since Silva has recently been seen hitting the pads with Freddie Roach, on the jiu-jitsu mats working up a sweat, and doing some weight training, his clearance to begin training might seem like a foregone conclusion to most. But even if he felt like he was back to 100%, having his doctor completely clear him for full-contact training is no doubt a huge step, both mentally and physically, for “The Spider”.
As far as a specific timetable for Silva’s return to the Octagon, Soares said that it’s still a bit premature to be throwing around return dates, but agreed with UFC President Dana White’s comments in a recent interview with MMAJunkie, where he stated “He could be the last fight of this year or the first fight of next year“. This seems to fly in the face of earlier comments made by Silva, who was quoted as saying he would not return before 2015, but Dana quickly brushed that off:
“What? Anderson Silva is saying something completely opposite of what’s happening? I don’t believe it,” he joked. “This is what he does every time he talks to the media. He says, ‘I absolutely will not fight Chael Sonnen again.’
“He always does that with the media. I don’t know if he likes to play with you guys or what he likes to do, but I said, he’ll be back in 2014 or first thing in 2015. End of 2014 or beginning of 2015 is what I said.”
And what about who Silva might fight, in that return match?
“He’s not one to call anyone out particularly,” said Soares.
We’ll see if that changes, the closer we get to the end of the year. And as always, stay tuned to BJPenn.com for any and all future updates.
