Alan Belcher to Brazil For Heavyweight BJJ Tournament
Alan Belcher is unfortunately been unable to compete in MMA, but that hasn’t stopped his competitive drive. As first reported by MMAfighting, Belcher will compete in a Heavyweight Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament in Brazil in Febuary. His inability to fight comes from two eye surgeries following a vicious eye-poke suffered in a bout with Michael Bisping in April of 2013.
“Alan Belcher can’t fight MMA not because of his eye injury, but he was cleared to fight jiu-jitsu,” Jeferson Mayca told MMAFighting.com. “We talked a lot over the last couple months and came up with the idea of having him in the heavyweight tournament.”
Belcher, a BJJ black belt, joins some stiff competition in the Copa Podio tournament, including world champions Rodolfo Vieira, Leandro Lo and Leonardo Nogueira. The tournament is a round-robin format, with the two winners of each of two five-man brackets competing in a 4-man single-elimination tournament. Copa Podio takes place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on February 1st.
