Exclusive | Alan Belcher Talks Injury, Weidman, Belfort, Jones, UFC 151, and More
Alan Belcher had a lot on the line when he called out UFC legend Vitor Belfort. Vitor answered with a resounding yes and the UFC scheduled the bout for UFC 152. Just as his wishes were about to come true UFC 151 fell apart due to the main event losing one half of its participants, and he watched Vitor get shuffled to UFC 152 to face UFC Light Heavyweight Jon Jones. All of this happened in a whirlwind week, but it could have been a blessing in disguise.
Coming in to his fight with Belfort, Alan sustained a painful spinal injury. Belcher spoke out in a video blog just after the announcement of UFC 151’s cancellation.
“About 3 or 4 weeks back I had a real bad back problem”, said Belcher. “I went to the doctor, found out that I had a spinal fracture, and that put me out for like three weeks.”
With Vitor fighting outside of the middleweight division Belcher now has an even better opportunity to shine. The division is stacked, and with Bisping vs. Stann looking like it may produce UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva’s next opponent, Alan can use the opportunity to prove he deserves to fight the winner of that potential bout. The challenge will be to heal the injury properly, and get back in to the gym at full speed.
“I just need a couple extra weeks and I’ll be back in action,” said Belcher in a recent interview with MMAWeekly.
Now, Alan opened up to BJPenn.com about the details of his injury, how it happened, his thoughts on UFC 151, Belfort fighting Jones, and a lot more.
The exclusive interview can be heard in its entirety in the video located on page 2.
