Coker Shows Interest In Make Eddie Alvarez vs. Gilbert Melendez Happen | MMA NEWS
“With Gilbert, we’re going to take a look at what Pat Healy does next. We don’t know who he’s fighting next but we’re going to definitely put him in there with someone tough to see how he does. By the time Gilbert fights again, either we’re going to sign somebody to come in and fight him or we’re going to take another look at Pat and see if he’s the right guy… Come on over to Strikeforce, (Eddie Alvarez), let’s do the Melendez fight. That would be fantastic. I think that he’s a guy who is extremely talented that we would love to have in Strikeforce to fight Gilbert. It would be great. … If he is a free agent and he is really free of any contractual relations, make the call. Eddie, come on down, let’s put the Melendez fight together.”
In a recent interview with mmafighting.com Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker touched on many topics, one of which was who is next for his lightweight champion.
The Alvarez vs. Melendez fight is one long talked about. With both men being the only two long time occupiers of the top 10 not under the UFC banner this clash has made sense for a long time. But can ZUFFA pull Alvarez into the fight or will they opt to put him straight into the UFC’s shark tank?

This won’t happen Rebney will never let Alverez out of his contract. UFC won’t pay big money for Alverez like they did Lombard. Chandler loss ruined any chances Alverez had of being a fighter UFC would pay more than he’s worth to get. Alverez is stuck cause his contract reads Bellator can match any offer UFC gives him and after losing Lombard no way in hell is Rebney going to sit back let one of his last big draws gets stolen out from under him. Rebney has Viacom as a partner now even if he can’t afford UFC offer they will pony up to SAVE FACE with fans and UFC to keep Alverez
Alvarez stock dropped on his title loss, the Aoki win just keeps him relevant amongst the top lightweights not in the UFC. He would be a great addittion to the lightweight roster in Strikeforce & maybe make more exciting.
Eddie thinks he’s worth more than he actually is. I think he would have gotten alot more money by strikeforce (pre-zuffa) and or the UFC if he hadn’t lost to Chandler. Aoki can’t compete against UFC top 10 regardless of where he is ranked. Melendez showed how to beat Aoki long before Alverez did which also didn’t help Alverez stock after his Aoki win.

Funny how Rebney was trying to death to get Coker on the phone to make that fight early 2011. Now that fans have so less interest in Strikeforce he is like “Make the call, lets make that fight”. Granted co-promotion and singing a new fighter are very different, but Rebney was offering them to fight on Strikeforce, Coker just didn’t believe enough Melendez would win.
