Dan Henderson Knows How To Beat Jon Jones, Thinks "Bones" Is A Good Match Up | UFC NEWS

By Jamie McAllister:
“You’ve really got to get inside and fight with him and end up in the clinch with him a lot. Jones is better than most guys in the clinch. … (But) that’s where I’m most comfortable. At the same time I need to be real careful with catching one of those goofy elbows that he throws… I look at my clinch as a little more active clinch, where I’m always looking for takedowns or different angles or strikes and things, (so) I don’t really look to those guys for clinch knowledge. I think we have two different views on the clinch.”

Dan Henderson comments on how to beat Jon Jones with USA Today shortly after UFC 145.

With Dan Henderson being the last thing standing between Jon Jones and total domination of the UFC Light Heavyweight division can you see Hendo employing such tactics and defeating Jones ?

i seriously don’t understand why everyone keeps trying to box with jones. shogun took out machida by attacking his legs. no one seems to want to attack jones’ bony legs, even though he’s a muay thai fighter with the longest reach in mma.

    makes no sense!

    • Blah says:

They don’t want to attack his legs because they are worried about getting taken down.

      • Axeholes says:

They’d would have to mix it up a bit. Set up the leg kicks with punch combos. Fake take down attempts. Keep Jones guessing, OR wanting to carelessly attack.
I say 3 to 5 well placed, good, hard leg kicks between the opening bell and 3 minutes in would change Jones’s ability to throw those long strikes and fancy flying knees.

        • Axeholes says:

Speaking of fighters’ fear of being taken down by Jones, when’s the last time he’s fought a really good, well rounded grappler/striker who has really great off-the-back submissions?
Some light heavyweight who’s really slippery on the ground?

        • Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

Shogun, but I don’t think he was ready for Jones. The night of Bader vs Jones they announced he would be filling in for Rashad. I knew Shogun was gonna lose. In their fight he tried to get an ankle lock or leg lock on Jones out of desperation but it ended up putting him at risk of more brutal GnP.

Jones can sit straight up without leaning to get good GnP because of his reach. Shogun would have to get on top or muscle him off like Rampage did against Jones.

        • jonesy says:

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh who in the ufc lhw division is all u just described??? i really cant think of any,,i guess lucky for jones

      • Scott Kikuchi says:

No one is kicking Jones in the legs because the UFC is telling them not to kick him in the legs. I know everyone will disagree, but I think Jones is a sham for the most part. Anyone who thinks his fight with Shogun was legit needs their eyes examined. Dana and crew are still dying for that big network contract – why is beyond me – and to get one, they have to toe the network lines and sensibilities – and that means having a hip black champ. The awesome Anderson Silva doesn’t fit the bill. He’s not American. He doesn’t ever engage in the buffoonery that the networks like to have black athletes indulge in, believing it brings ratings. So we get a fraud like Jon Jones.

  2. Jay says:

Really hope Hendo can do it ! However I think JJ will be far more careful and use his wrestling and submissions more

    • Axeholes says:

I’ve been saying the same thing forever. Someone’s gotta get inside and make him fight at close range the majority of the time. Outside ranges offer almost no chance to beat Jones.
Fighters best chances are to lock him up, and score takedowns.
Get him clinched, and on his back.

It can be done, but no one’s doing it.

      • Reality says:

Rashad knew that and so did Rampage. Apparently it’s not easy to get on the inside with Jones. I don’t see Hendo doing anything to Jones. His only chance is a puncher’s chance.

        • The Truth says:

rampages problem is that he wasn’t boxing, he was just throwing bombs that wouldn’t hit anybody all night long. and rashad didn’t even try to get inside after the second round i think. jones didn’t do much to keep him outside and rashad didn’t do anything to get inside.

        • The Truth says:

also jones wasn’t even trying to finish the fight.

  3. Dick Diaz says:

really hope dan hendersons gets this done! true inspiration story!

  4. Josh says:

I don’t see how he can win. Now there is always a chance he can , but a very slim one. Jone’s will be more hesitant to throwing the stand up arsenal he has , but I wouldn’t take a risk with those H-Bombs either. Jones is going to take him down , fitch him and grind out a victory. I give respect to Dan for stepping in to fight a 24 year old Champion at the age of 42. Go Dan , If you win this… I bet you.. I bet all my life savings that there will be a movie made about you. In the movie industry , Fedor , Dan , Wanderlei , and THE SPIDER are the poster boys. True legends

    • Russ Phifer says:

Why is Dana protecting Jones? Keep giving him short punchers that will never be able to get inside because Jones isn’t great but he’s a master at using his long limbs to defend himself. I was never more disappointed in a fight than Jones/Evans and it looks like Dana wants to keep his boy in the belt a while. Give him a Gufstifan type fighter. Equally long and lanky…unless you want him to keep the belt forever fighting against these short dudes. And the thought that jons could hang with Silva is stupid. Get a clue guys. Silva hasn’t lost a fight in over 4 years and jons wins a couple and gets a title shot before anyone has figured him out and you’re making him a god. Not even close. But Dana….Have some balls and give him a tall guy. I’d give Nick Diaz a better chance than Dan Henderson and I LOVE Hendo! :^/

      • JOSH Y says:

seriously? Protecting, he has fought ryan Bader, shogun, Rampage, lloyot Machida and Now Evans. Not to many fighters are his height. And you want to see him fight Gustafon bc he beat Thiago silva? And besides Gustafon who is there that is really tall for him to fight at LHW? BOnnar is tall and he beat him. Machida is ony 2 inches shorter.

      • Russ Your A joke. Just because some of these fighters may be “Short” Doesnt mean he’s being protected. Those are all of THE best fighters in LHW. he would dominate Diaz.

      • Dayho says:

That is one of the funniest things I’ve ever read

      • Rashad vs Machida II says:

Dude, you would put 20-30 more lbs on Diaz and expect him to move and strike like he does now? And Dana sucks at protecting fighters if throwing Shogun, Rampage, Machida, and Rashad is “protecting” someone! lol. It’s not Jones’ nor Dana’s fault that there is a height difference. Gustafsson, if the timing works out, will eventually fight Jones. Patience is the key. Many haters were impatient about Rashad having his chance and saying the Jones’ was “ducking” Rashad. Haters couldn’t have been more wrong after Saturday’s display of an MMA beatdown.

The only way to find out who would win between Jones and Anderson is to put them in the Octagon. But that fight will never happen. If it did, I got Jones on a TKO. Jones would do serious damage on his first takedown of Anderson. (and if Jones did win, main excuse for Anderson fans? Age.)

      • connor says:

protecting? that’s what it’s called when a fighter gets machida, and then three future hall of famers in rampage, rashad, and shogun. yeah, jon jones is a scrub, you nailed it.

        • Scott Kikuchi says:

He is a scrub. LOL At some point he is actually going to have to fight for real, and he’s either going to get KO’d so quickly you’ll be jumping over each other trying to post excuses, or he’s going to be choked out so quickly it’ll be pointed out as a mistake. Yes, a mistake to let him fight for real. Fighters have been backing off per orders from the powers that be forever. The UFC has become no different with this imposter being forced in everyone’s face as the “Michael Jordan” of MMA. LOL

      • Donnybrook says:

        Uneducated fool!!

  5. JOSH Y says:

hendo is saying the same thing rashad said. Its easier to say then to do. Hendo just better hope he ends the fight in the first bc if not he is done.

  6. I Never Asked For This... says:

    Sorry Hendo. Not gonna happen.

  7. Rondo says:

Cmon Dan everyone knows how to beat Jones….they just cant seem to do it =D

  8. bdizz says:

I love Dan but he would lose.

  9. Zack says:

Jones needs to go to heavyweight. He’s obviously too big to be beaten at lhw. Werdum, Struve, big country, Travis Browne, Matt mitrione. All of those guys would be a great fight for jones. We all know how good he thinks he is, but let’s see how good he really is.

  10. MMAnalyst says:

it’s easy to watch a fight and see missed opportunities, etc – but Hendo has too few tools to defeat Jones – they are great tools, of course – KO power, great wrestling, etc but Jones has quicker and more dynamic use of the clinch and is WAY bigger than Dan Henderson (I know Hendo fights bigger guys but it is still a disadvantage on top of all the others like reach, etc)

I think this is an easy day for Greg Jackson to plan and for Jones to execute.

  11. gunnar says:

I admire Hendo but it will be difficult for him to beat JJones…Jones just affraid to moov up to heavyweihgt He knows he will be like everyone.

  12. Beaner says:

This is why you kick him one good solid time directly on the knee and cause it to buckle.

  13. Liam says:

Think Jones will win this one via smart footwork & wrestling Hendo lacks good mobility

  14. Pijan says:

Hendo is well rounded and very experienced, but Jones is just too big, fast, and powerful. I’d love to see Jones get a little reality check but Hendo isn’t the guy to do it. (Should I even mention he’s too old?) Personally I think the best way to beat Jones is to take a few leg shots, punch your way, get the clinch, watch out for elbows, and throw some knees or maybe uppercuts. I love elbows, I’ve always thrown elbows in fights, it’s awesome to see someone in the UFC doing it, you have a shorter range to work with (unless your Jon Jones) but it hurts like hell, it’s so quick, and no one can see it coming. Plus you can even work some uppercut elbows, quick way to tag someone on the chin or make em’ bleed. Can’t forget about a good knee to the face either.

  15. John M says:

My boy Hendo getting a shot at this clown. Can’t wait!

  16. jonesy says:

this is gonna be same exact As anderson vs will look the exact same with jones choking him out in round 2…

  17. Donnybrook says:

Sounds similar to what Rashad was saying… easier said than done.

  18. Kawikthegeek says:

Jones was standing up in Shoguns guard catching him in the face dropping straight jabs ! Crazy. Once I saw that I knew 95% of fighter would not be able to roll with him. Hate that reach hahaha

  19. RitualOfWar says:

I hope Hendo comes to kick his ass.

  20. Sully says:

Dumb match. Guarantee the game plan will be cling Hendo against the cage. Pick him off from a safe distance and get the points win. Jon was boring against Rashad. Team Jackson point-fighting kicking in?

  21. Lefty says:

Jones hasn’t been hit with one solid punch, and that’s all it takes from Hendo. If he gets in that clinch Jones needs to watch out. Also being an Olympian wrestler I think he has the upper hand in the wrestling division. Dont be doubting Hendo he has a good chance, he has nothing to lose, so I wont be surprised if he goes out swinging hard.

  22. Sloth says:

i think hendo has a better chance than evans, most of the time dan moves forward in a way that is quite dangerous for his opponents. like a brick wall moving with a canon behind it lol. I see him closing the distance , eating a few but then demolishing jones with the right. seeing the way jones gets wobbled id say it would take just one h bomb for him to be in serious trouble.

  23. Gil says:

JBJ over Hendo by Bloody spinning elbow
