Controversial Calls: Sonnen vs. Bisping by the Numbers | UFC NEWS
Event: UFC on Fox 2
Date: January 28, 2012
Contestants: Chael Sonnen and Michael Bisping
The main event of UFC on Fox 2, also known as Evans vs. Davis, was overshadowed by a middleweight number one contender showdown between two of its best. Chael Sonnen and Michael Bisping went to war in a close three round fight that went the distance. In the end Chael Sonnen won via unanimous decision 30-27, 29-28, and 29-28. All three judges gave him the nod, but shortly after the fight Dana White was quoted as saying, “I had Bisping two rounds to one”. You’re right 99% of the time Dana, but this time you were wrong and I can prove it.
This round was all Chael Sonnen. The number of significant strikes was close, but Sonnen topped Bisping 24-13. The percentage of significant strikes landed also went to Chael with 51% to Bisping’s 33. Total strikes landed was more of the same seeing Chael Sonnen land 43 with Bisping again trailing behind with 23. When we get to succesful takedowns Chael clearly beat Bisping by completing 2 of 4, while The Count could reply with none of his own. If you look at the stats Chael clearly won this round.
Winner: Chael Sonnen
Bisping gets the nod in significant strikes scoring 15 to Chael’s 11. In terms of significant strike percentages Bisping topped Sonnen 38% to 28. Chael topped Michael 57-50 in total strikes landed, and also in the takedown category 1-0. You could give it to Chael because of the last two categories, but I leaned towards Bisping looking at the big picture here.
Winner: Michael Bisping
Starting much like round 1, Chael landed 5 significant strikes to Bisping’s 2. Sonnen’s significant striking percentage was clearly better besting Michael in this category 45% – 33. The total strikes landed continued to total in Chael’s favor. Sonnen landed 35 and The Count offered up 29. Each fighter landed one takedown, but Sonnen was able to pass Bisping’s guard twice. With these stats in mind it is Sonnen who won this third and final round.
Round 3 and bout winner: Chael Sonnen 2 rounds to 1
If you look at the total stats for this fight it is clear that Chael Sonnen technically won this contest, and hopefully puts to rest the notion that Michael Bisping should have been awarded the decision. Stats don’t lie Mr. White. Stats don’t lie.
