EXCLUSIVE | TUF Finale Headliner Kampmann; "If Ellenberger's not in shape he's going to pay for it" | MMA NEWS

Martin Kampmann has been in some of the most exciting fights in recent years. His fight with Diego Sanchez ended in a controversial decision loss, but showcased his versatility. After defeating Rick Story and Thiago Alves Martin’s momentum is picking up.

His next opponent is Jake Ellenberger who holds notable wins over welterweight standouts Jake Shields and Diego Sanchez. In his fight with Sanchez he dominated the first two rounds, but his pace significantly faded in the third. Kampmann has never really had issues with cardio and feels confident that this fight will be no different.

“I honestly don’t know if Jake does have trouble”, stated Kampmann. “I don’t have. I’m sure he’s prepared himself for a five round fight, but if Ellenberger’s not in shape he’s going to pay for it”.

Jake Ellenberger brings a lot of things to the table when it comes to fighting, but he is labeled a striker and rightfully so. Of his 27 wins, 17 have come via KO or TKO. Kampmann is also labeled a striker, but he believes that label is inaccurate.

“I think a lot of people thought of me as a striker when I came in to the UFC. That’s what they touted me as. Before the UFC most of my wins were by TKO and KO. I had even submission wins back then. Most of my wins in the UFC are by submission, but I’m stilled being billed as a kickboxer. I’m very confident in my submissions and my grappling. If the fight hits the ground I will submit Jake Ellenberger”.

A lot of fighters seem to be always one or two high profile fights away from a title shot. If you don’t believe me just ask Michael Bisping. Kampmann finds himself in that ideal position to place himself squarely in the mix if he defeats Jake.

“I think I’ve fought most of the best guys in the organization”, said Martin. “Jake is one of the best. I think when I beat Ellenberger I should definitely be in line for a title shot”.

Should Kampmann receive that title shot it could potentially be against Carlos Condit or current UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre. There is no question who Kampmann feels is the best match-up for him between the two.

“Condit. I’ve fought Condit before and I feel confident I can beat him again. The first fight was a close fight and I’m sure people would have liked to have had two more rounds. I’m down for a five round fight with Condit and I’m sure I can beat him. That being said, right now GSP has the real belt and I want to fight the guy who has the real belt. I want the belt”.

Staying busy is the key to the success of many athletes. The more they are active in their sport the more they are mentally sharp. Kampmann’s last fight was on March 3rd, and just three weeks after he stepped out of the Octagon he got a phone call from the UFC.

“After my fight in Australia I stayed there for three weeks”, Kampmann said. “My wife and my baby son came out. We were kind of cruising the country and had a little vacation out there. When I was out there I got the call from Joe Silva and I was still in vacation mode. I thought it was a good opportunity to main event in my home town. Once I got back home I got straight back in to training. That’s how I like it. I like to be busy and I’ll be in the gym training anyways. If I’m home I’m in the gym anyways so I might as well line up a fight”.

This Friday Martin Kampmann squares off against Jake Ellenberger in the main event of The Ultimate Fighter Finale which airs live on FX.

Wishin’ Kampy the besy of luck. He’s one of my fav fighters, always comes to fight and no matter how hurt/rocked he is, he’s never out of the fight till the bell rings.

  2. John M says:

That would serious put Kampmann in the top contender ranks of welterweights if he could submit Ellenbergers. I hope he wins this fight!

Is waiting… Lots a fun… Is it time yet?…. ……….. How bout now?.. Lol

  4. slacker says:

Kampmann has better foot and head movement than Diego and he is equally as tough. I think he will survive the early rounds and submit Ellenberger in the 4th or 5th.

  5. keep fitch (forever) says:

Big fan of this guy. I think kampmann is a more technical fighter on stand up. I think if the fight stays standing kampmann will get it.

I agree 100%. He is a guy you can never count out. I like Ellenberger too. But I am very curious to see what he is made of from the 3rd round on. I think he has to put away Kampmann early or he loses. Hoping for Kampmann though.
