Anderson Silva | Chael Sonen is Not a Martial Artist | UFC NEWS

By Lynn Mitchell:
The UFC 148 pre-fight press conference on April 24, 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the main event fighters Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva and number one contender and Chael Sonnen stare down.

Silva defeated Sonnen in August, 2010 in one of the greatest fights to ever take place in the Octagon. Sonnen dominated with ground and pound for four-and-a-half rounds before being caught in a submission with only seconds left in the fight.  This event has caused Chael Sonen’s relentless verbal attacks on Anderson Silva and his country of origin – Brazil blasted all over the internet

The pound for pound king had some words of wisdom for his adversary.  He explains how the mouthy Sonnen shows disregard for respect of the martial arts.   Silva implies wrestling not a martial art.

Anderson Silva:

“When I started practicing martial arts, Chael Sonnen, doesn’t start practicing in martial arts, he is a wrestler.  So he doesn’t know what martial arts is.  It’s respect.

Respect for a country, respect for the people and respect toward human beings.  Many times, people ask me, ‘But isn’t he promoting the fight?’ Yeah, okay, but there are many different ways to do that.  He did not respect our country, he disrespected my family and above all, he disrespected all the UFC audience and some people don’t realize that.

They find it great what he is doing. In my opinion, I think the best fight of the century would be myself and my clone, that’s something I think will never happen.  That doesn’t mean I am the best, that means I would like to be beaten by someone, many other things may happen, much like Sonnen here.  He beat me for five rounds, but he didn’t do the most important thing which was to win.  So, I am going to continue to do my job, I am going to practice really hard and I am going to try and bring this victory to Brazil.”

  1. Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

Wrestling is a martial art and is one of the oldest. Chael practices the art but not the philosophy for the sake of selling a fight. If Anderson wants a real fight he should fight Hector Lombard. If he wants to fight his clone he should fight Jon Jones.

    • jacob lee says:

I have seen chael teach seminars and i am attending one of his this summer in vegas. He tells all the little kids to be respectful and to always do your best and respect your opponent. He is not the guy most people think he is!

      • Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

It’s an act for the cameras and to promote the fight. I understand where Anderson is coming from too. What else is he supposed to say after Chael insulted his wife? If he didn’t respond he would looks like a punk. Not everyone is aware that this isn’t the real Chael. But, that doesn’t mean he isn’t a jackass.

      • Ben Nusbaum says:

What he does in private is of no concern if he’s a prick on world wide television. He should be a draw because of what he does in the cage, not who he verbally abuses outside of it.

  2. A. Chung says:

Spiritually speaking, Chael is not a martial artist. However, he is a cheater, con-man, and a convicted felon. He is lucky the only gave him two year probation. If I was up to me, I would throw his bitch ass in jail for 5 to 10 years! Money laundering and mortgage fraud is no laughing matter! Some poor working stiffs has lost a great deal of their life saving!

The UFC should have thrown his punk ass out; but Diana White only see the $$ that Chael can bring in. That is why I will not watch any UCF event with Chael.

    • James Leonard says:

Good thing nobody gives a shit if you ever watch another UFC event again!!

    • hendoshmendo says:

Your so right he’s everything you said and some. To cheat people of their savings and just get a slap on the hand is as much of a joke as he is. I hope he snifs Silva’s crotch again!

  3. Memeth says:

Wrestling is a martial art, it comes from grecoroman wrestling wich was used for militar preparation besides sport competition. Martial arts means arts of war, you fuckin cocky idiot.

And respect is recognice that you win the last fight being beated the shit up.

    • anderson silva says:

this is a gift from me to you

      .l.

      enjoy it

    • Nate says:

Your grammar is so bad it’s hard to decipher your poorly written insults.

Can you not read though? Silva acknowledged he was losing the fight, but made the point that he did indeed come out the victor, which in the end is all that is really important.

Words of wisdom: Read before you rant.

    • Xaninho says:

Wrestling is not a martial art. It is and always has been just entertainment. Ancient wrestling in Mongolia and Greece was done naked, so it was kinda gay too.

      • Aaron says:

Wrestling isn’t a martial art? I’m pretty sure countries have been using it for thousands of years to help prepare their soldiers for battle…

        Not a martial art. Pffft.

  4. mike cocchiere says:

Chael partially acts the way he does to promote fights, which is obviously working for him.

  5. true mma says:

Sonnen is not a man. He is a little shit talking bitch and dumbass people try to say he’s only promoting the fight. Bullshit, this isn’t WWE. I wrestled in high school but that doesn’t mean I’m a martial artist.

    • Big TxCowboy says:

      cool story bro!

    • ManoGonzalez137 says:

You’re not any better with your comments about Sonnen. You can’t make a point if you’re fighting fire with fire, but even you understand just like Sonnen does that doing such jacked up things may get results. Don’t be a hypocrit.

  6. Clay says:

    Steve Segal is badass

  7. RFK says:

I liked Anderson he is one of the best in the world. That being said I would love to see Chael beat his ass but hey haters gonna hate.

  8. Boogers says:

I big shout out to you Nate. Thank you. You’re the only one who pointed out the Anderson admitted that he WAS BEATEN FOR FIVE ROUNDS!!! Sonnen will win this fight. If he has been working on sub. defense. He’s unstoppable by any MW in every other facet of his game. He’s showed it time and time again. You may not like him but you can’t deny that he’s a good fighter.

    • Xaninho says:

Unstoppable? You haven’t seen his most recent fight against Bisping then? That one where Bisping got robbed by the judges at the end?

He will have to fight with ‘normal’ testosterone ratio’s this time. So don’t think he can make it to round 5 again.

      • Aaron says:

I guess we’ll see. I personally think he’ll outwork Silva just like he did last time. Silva has shown bad cardio in the past.

That being said I agree with you on the Bisping fight. Sonnen looked like he blew his wad by middle of round 2.

I just want to see somebody beat Anderson already. I’ve been waiting like 7 years haha

  9. Jay says:

Chael is the farthest thing from unstoppable lol his record shows that. But Anderson did admit that chael beat him for 5 rounds but ppl that think that fight will have any bearing on the rematch is crazy..let’s not forget phael pissed 16:1 which is even higher than overoid pissed n chael pissed right after the fight happened. That alone should tell you that the rematch will be different. Then there is the whole broken rib that Silva has, course that is only a rumor but if it is true can u imagine having to attempt to stuff a takedown by phael? Plus Anderson didnt look like him self at all that fight so it could very well be true..Anderson will finish him quickly in the rematch it will be over inside of 3 rounds. I would love to watch him fight his clone though that shit would be insane.
