Sonnen Has New Respect For Silva I MMA News

The most anticipated fight in UFC history has now concluded and the reigning UFC middleweight champion is still that, the champion. This fight had by-far the most amount of trash talking with a  two-year gap in between the two fights.

After a tough loss, though, it is Chael Sonnen who came out and gave respect to Anderson Silva in a post-fight conversation with UFC president Dana White.

Here, White talks to Jim Rome on the conversation as well as the newfound respect that Sonnen has for Silva.

“This is what Chael Sonnen said to me after the fight. He didn’t say it at the press conference, but he said it to me. He said, ‘I have so much respect for this guy, Dana. I’ve been competing in combat sports since I was seven years old. In that first round, when I was on top of him, hittin’ him with those big elbows, I felt him break. I broke him in that first round. He came back in the second round and destroyed me. I’ve never seen anybody do that, ever.'”

Chael Sonnen looked great in the first round, scoring an inevitable takedown and picking up where he left off right before he was submitted. He then spent the rest of the round beating Silva down with no sort of counter attack by the champ.

The second round saw Silva defend a takedown and take the fight to Sonnen, landing several good shots. Sonnen threw a spinning backlist at Silva but missed, winding up on the mat and subsequently taking a hard knee to the body. Silva would go on to stop the fight with punches.

  1. Omar says:

Thanks Chael! Everyone else STFU!!! “He destroyed me”. End of Saga!!

  2. BJ Fan says:

Anderson didn’t look broken to me at the end of the first round.

    • test-tube says:

silva wasn’t showing he was broken coz he don’t want to increase the ego of sonnen, he hides it. showing your weakness is a NO NO in this sport.

      • Shawn says:

Silva was baiting him in the first. He wasn’t concerned about being on his back. He knew Chael’s rabbit punches wouldn’t affect him, and it didn’t. But it did give Sonnen a false sense of confidence going into the second. And we all know how that turned out. That back fist was a move of desperation when he couldn’t take Silva down in the second. Well played Anderson…well played.

    • Reality says:

He definitely wasn’t broken. He barely got hit(at least not hit with any force). In the 1st fight he got hit with some real shots. This time Chael wasn’t getting good shots in. His biggest thing was the mount that he did nothing with. Silva looked like it was just another day at work as he walked back to his corner. Different than the 1st fight when he kind of dragged over to his corner. He’s a smart fighter. He was aware of how he ended up on his back in round 1 and used a different strategy in round 2 to counteract. Then he sensed when Chael was actually broken and seized the opportunity. By the way, that was before the famous imbalanced spinning back fist. Chael had it(breaking Silva) wrong there.

  3. The Gooch says:

Anderson didn’t look broken to me at the end of the first round. Just sayin…

  4. Keep Fitch (Forever) says:

I have no respect for Silva. He cheated on 3 different occasions. He greased, he grabbed the shorts, and the knee was illegal.

    • Xaninho says:

Unless his face is between his titties I don’t see the KNEE hitting the FACE.

      • Shawn says:

        Nice gif.

      • Keep Fitch (Forever) says:

Dude I think the knee hit the tip of his chin or something. Chael said that he had to get 8 stitches on his tongue from the knee. I think it was an illegal knee.

        • Xaninho says:

His coach said he needed 8 stitches from the knee. Chael never said such thing.

I’m sure he did need 8 stitches, but come on man! you can clearly see the knee is not hitting his face.

        • ballsackface says:

do they even stitch the tongue?

that clip is a bad angle as well theres one where the arm is not in the way and it clearly shows the knee doesnt contact his face

        • lolziez says:

after this gif in slow motion and you STILL! question it as a illegal knee, LMAO what a fuckin dumbass, obviously if anything hit his lip, it was the thigh dipshit. what next? complain about the vaseline? people are acting like he had SOOOO much vaseline on his face that he could thoroughly cover his body and make it slick enough to grapple with BAHAHAHAHA. the shorts grabbing is the ONLY legit argument, but as for the knee and the vaseline……..GTFO a here!!

      • stephen riddle says:

How did u do that nice!

      • John says:

Quit looking at the knee…..It’s the lower thigh that hit him in the jaw…That’s an Illegal strike…but it’s done and over with.

        • Mach00man says:

Only a referee can assess a foul. If the referee does not call the foul, judges must not make that assessment on their own and should not factor such into their scoring calculations.

        • Xaninho says:

The trajectory is downwards, the thigh hardly touched him and even if it did it wasn’t moving towards the chin but downwards following the knee.

      • Mike says:

That knee is perfect. Dangerous, could have easily struck the head and gotten a DQ. But no, it was on point. Go Anderson.

      • WrestlingRules says:

Illegal as it gets…..That;s cool though. I think everybody should do this (we will be seeing this more and more boys)…Silva guess what Karma’s a bitch…..Looks like a knee/thigh to the face is in your future. I would like to see Lombard out-thug this thug…

        • Xaninho says:

          delusional, denial…psycho?

It’s recorded on film dude! You can’t keep saying it’s illegal when it’s clear that the knee is going downwards ending up into the chest.

In case you didn’t know yet, a knee to the face of a downed opponent is illegal not to the body.

      • CombatRusse says:

        Thank’s fors the nice gif!
In my few thai boxing classes, I remember the coach insisting that when you knee, you have to hit with the knee, not with the thigh because the thigh won’t do any damage!
And the knee of Anderson hit the chest of Sonnnen, it is even close to the solar plexus in my opinion

      • beag says:

brilliant. well done for posting this. This should be on the home page of all major mma sites so that the rest of the mma world can have some peace and quiet finally.

    • dynomania says:

Pretty sure the knee was legal, or else there would be a hell of a lot more controversy. Close, but I think it was legal along with most others.

    • Guss says:

He wiped little vaseline he had on his face on his arms and shorts. Which was immediately wiped down by the referee. And obviously, it had no affect on Sonnen taking him down, and keeping him there. He grabbed Sonnen’s shorts yes (which I thought was uncalled for as well). But so did Sonnen. Chael even admitted that when Siva grabbed his shorts, he decided to grab Silva’s as well. So that negates that as well. As for the knee, well I know that you definitely weren’t watching the same fight as everyone else. The only cheating that was happening was you robbing yourself of watching a dominant fight over Sonnen.

I also believe that either Silva let him self get taken down in the first, or he didn’t care to be taken down. He was probably trying to give Sonnen a false sense of confidence. Which he clearly mentioned to Dana. “In that first round, when I was on top of him, hittin’ him with those big elbows, I felt him break. I broke him in that first round.” He was ill prepared for the real Silva to show up in the second. And I’m sure that was the reason for his blowups and aggression leading up to the fight. Silva even fooled other MMA fighters, that they believed Sonnen had gotten to his head. It was the complete opposite.

    • Presotn says:

      LMFAO!!! Silva cheated??? OK guy…
Mr 16:1 Testosterone ratio has a problem with vaseline that was wiped off before the start of the fight?
Silva got a warning about the shorts like anyone else would. Yes, he grabbed them.
But your boy sonnen should not have even been allowed back in the cage again after the first fight.

So STFU and be glad you got to see a rematch. The only (money) reason (money) he got the 2nd fight (money) is that Chael has been the first guy in a long while to actually go after and challenge Silva.

      … because he was 16:1.

    • beag says:

dude get a window in your room or something or look out it for a change

  5. dynomania says:

I have seen someone do that before, twice. His name is Frankie Edgar.

  6. McLovin says:

Just about every fighter in the UFC has grabbed the opponents shorts at one time or another. Even though Anderson clearly greased it didn’t seem to have any effect on the outcome of the fight.

    • Reality says:

I guess you missed the part where the referee wiped all the “grease” off of Silva’s body before the fight.

  7. DMAC says:

” I have no respect for Silva” blah blah blah you really think he’s seeking your meaningless approval? Fucking dummy!

  8. Wsheets says:

THE KNEE WASN’T ILLEGAL AND SILVA HAS DONE THE VASELINE THING IN ALMOST EVERY ONE OF HIS FIGHT. Stop sucking Chael Sonnen’s dick and get over it. He’s done.

  9. Cancr says:

Ah, yes, the spinning backlist. Got to watch out for them unlike spinning backfist.

    *JOURNALISM*

  10. true mma says:

Sonnen got his ass kicked and that’s it. Fuck all you Silva haters.

  11. e says:

sonnen fans need to accept the loss like your hero had. i got nothing against chael. you faggot fans need to shut the fuck up already. the shit is done.

  12. T.DADDY says:

I’m not a silva hater… That said he grabbed the trunks, he grabbed the fence, he thru an illegal knee and he greased… He looked for every ILLEGAL advantage he could get.. and its funny how all you GSP haterz talk about him greasing but don’t say nothing about silva doing the same thing…lmao.. silva is the best to ever walk in the octagon but I lost some respect for him for the illegal tactics

    • Diezel says:

I agree to a certain extent, he is not the greatest in my opinion,

    • Dark Harrier says:

Dude, did you NOT see the Ref WIPE him down b4 the fight started???? Did you NOT hear Chael say Andy grab my shorts so i grab his too??? Did you not watch the fight at all??? they showed in slow-mo every angle they could and the knee went dead into his chest…. I’m just trying to figure out what fight where some people watching cause i know what i saw and how many times they replayed that knee but yet you DUMMIES keep saying it was illegal knee…yea i disagree with him wiping himself but with that being said that Ref got a cloth and wiped his ass down from arms, chest and shorts and if you think I’m making this shit up, watch it again sir!

      • Dee says:

I’m so tired of this greasing Stuff. No one seen the greasing. It was Joe that told the viewing audience that Anderson wiped Vaseline off his face and over his body. No one else has mentioned it. We’re here arguing over something we didn’t even see. lol we don’t even know the how much or how serious the wipe was. You can only put so much vaseline on on someone’s face in the 1st place.

        • Balls McGee says:

No u could clearly see him wiping it all over himself and that reff barely wiped off shit he touched him with towel and left. U should know how hard vasaline is to get off sinnce it’s always on your left hand

    • mmaislandjunkie says:

Stfu tbaggy ur the biggest hater! Chael sonnen is lucky he turtles up like a fetus, anyone w a clue knew he was gonna get wrecked AGAIN and he did. Chael and Brock suck!!!

    • Xaninho says:

      Not a hater huh? smh..

  13. Diezel says:

Anderson Silva Threw an illegal blow to the head Intentionally, He got lucky (once again) and missed the intended target, The head/face, He was willing to give up his belt by DQ just to fuck Sonnen up knowing he would get a Immediate rematch.. Say what u want, But a true champion should not feel the need to grease himself, Hold trunks..He is a good fighter, but his fanboys have put him on a higher pedastal than he deserves…. ChaeL Sonnen proved that Silva is not that good, He whipped his ass in the first fight and in the first rd of the second fight. If had not been for that Idiotic Spinning back fist, the fight was going back to the ground sooner or later. Sonnen can beat him, I’d like to see another fight between these 2.Yes, because I hate Anderson Silva, He’s got his fanboys and Dana White Tuning his meat whistle But I’m not Buying it.. Jon Jones Is pound 4 pound the best Fighter, and would destroy the fraud that is Silva.. Sonne Also proved that he can be beaten if you just keep your head in the game… OVERATED!

  14. You Cant Be Serious says:

He should respect a man thats finished him 2x. Sonnen fans, and his camp are dilusional. Chael himself isnt complaining at all, quite the opposite actually. Quit whining about Sliva cheating and making excuses for Sonnen.

  15. 9lives304 says:

“WrestlingRules”, where u hidin at fucker? Just cuz i was right AGAIN doesn’t mean u have to pout and hide from bjpenn.com. Not to mention I’m on par for my 85%….out of 6 called fights, i’ve been DEAD ON with the exception of Silva vs Franklin…..i thought Vanderlei would win in Brazil…..but other than that….i’ve been DEAD ON with my picks!!! Might as well face it brotha man…like i said, i know my shit!!! I’m not going to go on & on about Silva vs Sonnen…but like i said Chael would make a mistake & Anderson would exploit & take advantage of it…and TADA that’s exactly what happened….there’s a reason he’s been the Champ for 5 straight years….i think Chael needs to fight Bisping again cuz the 1st one was too close to call really, and if Bisping wins, give him a shot at the champ!!! Fuck it, who else is left in the division? I’ll tell ya who…….Cung Le….stylistically that would make a GREAT fight…Silva vs Le….anybody else agree? WrestlingRules, come out of hiding and face facts & face me brotha….time to concede to the “GURU” as yall call me!! And that is all for now!!!

    • WrestlingRules says:

You are delusional as usual. SHOW ME PRE-FIGHT ALL YOUR FUCKIN’ PICKS????? That;s what I thought…..nope….now go hide under rock or lump of coal…

      • 9lives304 says:

if u open ur eyes and read what i sent u before the Brazilian UFC 147, i predicted 6 fights, 3 for 147 & 3 for 148….but i see ur not A STAND-UP GUY, just a bullshitter….so just continue on with ur ridiculous, biased picks, and i’ll keep picking the winners…..so stfu & have a nice day! That is all for now!!!

  16. Dee says:

Like I said before. From my observation it looked to me that Silva was caught up into the hype and came out swinging, which was the reason for him being taken down. After spending the entire round on his back, he calmed down and came out in the 2nd round ready to fight like Anderson. He only took 2 maybe 3 hard shots in the 1st round. Did he break Anderson? Perhaps, I think Anderson was afraid of being taken down again. I don’t think he’s ready to go another 5 rounds with anyone, which is why I wish he would just retire. He’s old in mind and spirit. He doesn’t want to war with anyone anymore. By the way, I want Dana to shut the hell up. I’m tired of him blurting things out what fighters tell him in confidentiality.

    • Nuitari X says:

The man knows himself better than anyone, especially better than someone on an online forum. No disrespect to you buddy but Anderson is a smart guy and he hasn’t taken a lot of damage over his career so if he thinks he has still got what it takes to keep going then more power to him. I for one am happy with that decision, I would like to see a few more fights out of the spider at least. About the confidentiality thing, I think your right about that. However in this case, I think a lot of people (especially chael’s delusional fans even thought it doesn’t matter) needed to hear that.

    • WrestlingRules says:

Did you see Silva’s face after round 1?? Priceless, he needed his corner at that break… Sonnen and his other opponents need to make that bitch Silva fight. He waits for you to engage and then is the best at taking advantage of someone’s mistake. Typical counter-striker. We all saw what Silva looks like when he tries to come forward throwing those Brazilian Bitch Slap air punches. Get’s taken down easily. Silva sitting back on the fence and short grabbing is his takedown defense. If Sonnen would have made Silva come to the middle of the cage and try to punch. Boom another takedown with with elbows to that ugly mug.

      • DanaWhiteTheBoss says:

@ wrestlingrules, you’re the dumbest kid on this forum. Stop making excuses for why your guy lost. Bitch silva? Man he would make you his bitch in person so quit talking, *****

        • WrestlingRules says:

Did you actually read ONE excuse above?? Sonnen got beat, my comments were about Silva’s fighting style and what a fighter needs to do to get him out of that. So if I am the dumbest and you couldn’t get that out of my comment, then what does that make you??? demented?? hat Bitch Silva really bugged you didn’t it…What does your psychiatrist tell you about that kid? Take more Ritalin??

        • DanaWhiteTheBoss says:

Don’t cry now. Silva raped your favorite wrestler hahaha. His fighting style beat the lay-N-pray style that wrestling brings, which is why wrestling actually sucks. Go cry more and keep telling yourself that sonnen won the first match and silva cheated the second fight. P.s. silva would beat Jon jones too.

        • WrestlingRules says:

Now you are really needing an extra does of Ritalin with the Jones comment. Come on Now Dana are you for real???

      • 9lives304 says:

u despise Silva as much as i despise Sonnen……wrestling is a crucial art in MMA, but if u can’t posture up and rain down pain then a takedown just gets u a point to the judges..other than that…worthless!!!

  17. CHEALISGOODBUTHELOST says:

Here guys i’ll make this kind of simple.

The knee itself hits inbetween his nipples. That’s legit and most people don’t argue against this fact. Simply they are saying the thigh is what is making it illegal.

SO the fact is a strike to a downed opponent by flying knee to chest is not on the list of things you can not do. The thigh may of hurt and been a good shot but it’s not nearly as powerful as a pointy boney knee getting slammed in your face which is the only reason they say you can’t knee a downed opponent.

  18. GRT 3000 says:

he split his tongue from the impact of the knee to the gut, simple as that. & he didn’t break Anderson in the first, he broke himself; Chael can’t sustain that kind of pace without maximum superjuice.

  19. RickFox says:

Both guys are liars. The reverse elbow missing by a mile looked quite amatuer. The knee could have landed on the face if Silva wanted to do some unprecedented damage. The fight proved that Silva can talk crazy but hasn’t really cracked. Before the fight Silva may have thought he could lose, after the fight Sonnen knows he can’t win. Had the knee landed higher, the debate would be on the meaning of downed. If he’s on his ass getting up he can still get kneed in the face. Ask Sean Sherk against Penn, or Cro Cop against Mir, down means on your fours not near being on your ass.

  20. shaqattack says:

Sonnen didn’t lose we was trying out for WWE. He waited around on the ground to be kicked in the sternum, than somehow got right back up after impact. Hmmm, couldn’t have choregraphed it any better. If you smell what dana is cooking

    • Gabi says:

He was on the ground so long because he didn’t want to be kicked or kneed in the face the moment he starting getting up. Every fighter looks at whats going on before they get up. That’s why some fighter just lay on their backs and wait for the ref. Very simple dude.
