Sonnen Has New Respect For Silva I MMA News
The most anticipated fight in UFC history has now concluded and the reigning UFC middleweight champion is still that, the champion. This fight had by-far the most amount of trash talking with a two-year gap in between the two fights.
After a tough loss, though, it is Chael Sonnen who came out and gave respect to Anderson Silva in a post-fight conversation with UFC president Dana White.
Here, White talks to Jim Rome on the conversation as well as the newfound respect that Sonnen has for Silva.
“This is what Chael Sonnen said to me after the fight. He didn’t say it at the press conference, but he said it to me. He said, ‘I have so much respect for this guy, Dana. I’ve been competing in combat sports since I was seven years old. In that first round, when I was on top of him, hittin’ him with those big elbows, I felt him break. I broke him in that first round. He came back in the second round and destroyed me. I’ve never seen anybody do that, ever.’”
Chael Sonnen looked great in the first round, scoring an inevitable takedown and picking up where he left off right before he was submitted. He then spent the rest of the round beating Silva down with no sort of counter attack by the champ.
The second round saw Silva defend a takedown and take the fight to Sonnen, landing several good shots. Sonnen threw a spinning backlist at Silva but missed, winding up on the mat and subsequently taking a hard knee to the body. Silva would go on to stop the fight with punches.

Anderson didn’t look broken to me at the end of the first round.
silva wasn’t showing he was broken coz he don’t want to increase the ego of sonnen, he hides it. showing your weakness is a NO NO in this sport.
Silva was baiting him in the first. He wasn’t concerned about being on his back. He knew Chael’s rabbit punches wouldn’t affect him, and it didn’t. But it did give Sonnen a false sense of confidence going into the second. And we all know how that turned out. That back fist was a move of desperation when he couldn’t take Silva down in the second. Well played Anderson…well played.

He definitely wasn’t broken. He barely got hit(at least not hit with any force). In the 1st fight he got hit with some real shots. This time Chael wasn’t getting good shots in. His biggest thing was the mount that he did nothing with. Silva looked like it was just another day at work as he walked back to his corner. Different than the 1st fight when he kind of dragged over to his corner. He’s a smart fighter. He was aware of how he ended up on his back in round 1 and used a different strategy in round 2 to counteract. Then he sensed when Chael was actually broken and seized the opportunity. By the way, that was before the famous imbalanced spinning back fist. Chael had it(breaking Silva) wrong there.

The trajectory is downwards, the thigh hardly touched him and even if it did it wasn’t moving towards the chin but downwards following the knee.

In case you didn’t know yet, a knee to the face of a downed opponent is illegal not to the body.

In my few thai boxing classes, I remember the coach insisting that when you knee, you have to hit with the knee, not with the thigh because the thigh won’t do any damage!
And the knee of Anderson hit the chest of Sonnnen, it is even close to the solar plexus in my opinion

Pretty sure the knee was legal, or else there would be a hell of a lot more controversy. Close, but I think it was legal along with most others.
He wiped little vaseline he had on his face on his arms and shorts. Which was immediately wiped down by the referee. And obviously, it had no affect on Sonnen taking him down, and keeping him there. He grabbed Sonnen’s shorts yes (which I thought was uncalled for as well). But so did Sonnen. Chael even admitted that when Siva grabbed his shorts, he decided to grab Silva’s as well. So that negates that as well. As for the knee, well I know that you definitely weren’t watching the same fight as everyone else. The only cheating that was happening was you robbing yourself of watching a dominant fight over Sonnen.
I also believe that either Silva let him self get taken down in the first, or he didn’t care to be taken down. He was probably trying to give Sonnen a false sense of confidence. Which he clearly mentioned to Dana. “In that first round, when I was on top of him, hittin’ him with those big elbows, I felt him break. I broke him in that first round.” He was ill prepared for the real Silva to show up in the second. And I’m sure that was the reason for his blowups and aggression leading up to the fight. Silva even fooled other MMA fighters, that they believed Sonnen had gotten to his head. It was the complete opposite.

Just about every fighter in the UFC has grabbed the opponents shorts at one time or another. Even though Anderson clearly greased it didn’t seem to have any effect on the outcome of the fight.

Like I said before. From my observation it looked to me that Silva was caught up into the hype and came out swinging, which was the reason for him being taken down. After spending the entire round on his back, he calmed down and came out in the 2nd round ready to fight like Anderson. He only took 2 maybe 3 hard shots in the 1st round. Did he break Anderson? Perhaps, I think Anderson was afraid of being taken down again. I don’t think he’s ready to go another 5 rounds with anyone, which is why I wish he would just retire. He’s old in mind and spirit. He doesn’t want to war with anyone anymore. By the way, I want Dana to shut the hell up. I’m tired of him blurting things out what fighters tell him in confidentiality.

SO the fact is a strike to a downed opponent by flying knee to chest is not on the list of things you can not do. The thigh may of hurt and been a good shot but it’s not nearly as powerful as a pointy boney knee getting slammed in your face which is the only reason they say you can’t knee a downed opponent.

Had the knee landed higher, the debate would be on the meaning of downed. If he’s on his ass getting up he can still get kneed in the face. Ask Sean Sherk against Penn, or Cro Cop against Mir, down means on your fours not near being on your ass.

He was on the ground so long because he didn’t want to be kicked or kneed in the face the moment he starting getting up. Every fighter looks at whats going on before they get up. That’s why some fighter just lay on their backs and wait for the ref. Very simple dude.
