"Cigano is better in the stand-up and on the ground," Say JDS Coach | UFC NEWS

By Jamie McAllister
Yuri Carlton Junior Dos Santos BJJ coach in an interview with TATAME.

Carlton comments on Junior’s Jiu-Jitsu skills and feels he may be better than Mir on the ground.

“I am positive that Cigano’s Jiu-Jitsu is better. He trains with the Best guys in Brazil: Minotauro, Minotouro, Anderson, Demian, just to name a few… I believe he won’t disappoint people when it comes to Jiu-Jitsu.”

Carlton discusses the importance of training Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil & quality training partners.

“Frank Mir trains in the United States with some Brazilians, but we have the privilege of training in Brazil. When you are talking about Jiu-Jitsu, Brazil is the place to be. We have the great champions and Cigano is not far from being one.”

On the pressure placed on Junior Dos Santos to defend his title.

“The expectations are great. In this first defense we are really excited, just like in previous bouts. His preparation is complete and he’s been training for it for years. The speculations about Mir being better on the ground are bullshit. Cigano is better in the stand-up and on the ground. I’m positive about it.”

“It’s hard to take Cigano down. Until you get him there,he is a long way ahead of you. In case he does it, Cigano is very prepared. He’s always trained Jiu-Jitsu and Wrestling. He’s ready. We don’t say it much, but there is a lot of perseverance. He deserves to be there and he’ll remain the champion after this fight.”

  1. maurice says:

well im not going to say his bjj is better then mirs. but he’s been training at such a high level in bjj since the beginning of his career. this will be another fight where we dont get to see his bjj. first round stoppage. mir is the first person jds fought in a while with no chin, no heart, and terrible takedown attempts.

    • Reality says:

Well he did show some heart in his last fight. But yeah, JDS is about to beat him worse than Brock did in my opinion.

  2. ThaGreenBandit says:

While this could possibly be true, I wouldn’t suggest that he puts the theory to test. Don’t wanna be comparing surgery scars with Big Nog…

  3. Thom says:

ofcourse JDS’s trainer says that lol.

  4. bizzle says:

I may be a huge JDS fan but I am not delusional.. He is not better then Mir on the ground, period.. JDS is however going to be able to avoid the TD all together or scramble back to his feet immediately.. He hips out extremely well and moves so fast for a HW Mir will not be able to keep him down..

    • Blah says:

He is not better than Mir on the ground but he probably knows enough to defend himself on the ground. Mir and other people are making it sound like as soon as it hits the ground its over.

  5. Ryan kelly says:

Dont think he is better on the ground but he is going k the **** o frank mir his take downs are shitty it aint even going to go to the ground shane cardio and cain both couldnt get him there and shane cardio smashed mir so…….? Ya !

  6. steeler says:

hahahahahaha that’s almost as crazy as robert drysdale saying mirs standup is better than jds. I think jds will win tho’ bc mirs td aren’t that good and he got a weak chin he can survive when he gets dropped like against big nog or lesner but he gets dropped easily I think his only chance is pull guard I don’t think jds could defend at all if it hits the ground bc look at big nog but mir is to confident and will try to stand and get ktfo

  7. Bornkiller87 says:

lmao, his trainer must be smoking that cali kush in brazil.
