Ratings Report: UFC on FOX 7 Draws 3.3 Million Viewers

The TV ratings for the seventh edition of “UFC on FOX” were released in a bittersweet manner for the MMA’s most famous event.

Roughly 3.31 million people were drawn by the card in which Benson Henderson put his lightweight belt on the line against Gilbert Melendez. That was enough to grant FOX with the number one spot among total viewers and with adults from 18 to 49 years old. However, specifically regarding the aforementioned age group, the rating of 1.5 adults 18-49 earned by UFC on FOX 7 was 17% lower than the 1.8 rating for UFC on FOX 6, headlined by the flyweight title fight between Demetrious Johnson and John Dodson.

Nevertheless, these numbers should be put in perspective, as pointed out by MMA Fighting’s Dave Meltzer:

“It should be pointed out key points when it comes to the fast national ratings. The first is the fast nationals only rated the show from 8-10 p.m. in all time slots. That means that most of the main event, which in this case would almost surely be the most-watched segment of the show, is not figured into the average. So the final number should be up significantly, probably in the 4 million viewer range and a rating in the mid-2s.

The second is it rates the live airing in three of the four U.S. time zones, Eastern, Central and Mountain. On the West Coast, where UFC viewership is the strongest, it rates what airs on FOX affiliates from 8-10 p.m., and not the 5-7:40 p.m. live airing.”

In addition to the Henderson x Melendez title bout, UFC on FOX 7 featured top-tier fights between Frank Mir and Daniel Cormier, and Nate Diaz versus Josh Thomson, but lacked on its main card a superstar name like Quinton “Rampage” Jackson on UFC on FOX 6, or B.J. Penn and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua on UFC on FOX 5.

The next UFC event to be broadcasted live on FOX is scheduled to take place at Seattle, Washington on July 27th. Its main event has yet to be announced.
